Guys I just changed the oil in a 2005 VW Passat and the filter holder was missing the lower o-ring.
Am I fucked?
I put a new one on but now I'm wondering if I should pull the whole thing apart looking for the old one...
Ancient mechanicfag here. I wouldn't worry about it. That's why oil pickups have screens. It probably crumbled over time and is wildly unlikely to disturb anything. It won't damage an oil pump even if ingested.
You'd be surprised the amount of shit which accumulates in old engines with zero harm done.
>>1038655
pretty sure challenger had some o-ring troubles as well....
>>1038659
Another mechanic here, what he says is true, she'll be right.
Sup /diy/, im going to build a synth, but i need to make custom panel plates, anyone knows where to get them made? The whole thing, panel plus engraving.
I know, not very diy, but cant be fucked to buy a CNC machine for a couple of engravings.
>>1038183
arduino synth kit
>>1038183
I'd rather drill it myself out of a blank and paint or punch the markings.(or even dymo)
I've always found the elaborate range markings on pots pretty pointless in synths.
why would you want to clutter up the panel with a range of 1-10 with 3 steps between each, when its all about adjusting and tweaking until you "like" it anyway.
the only place you'd need precision is on a VCO, where you should use a tuner anyway.
there are sources for this, but i think its quite expensive.
ask on muffwiggler or something.
>>1038183
Use the toner transfer method, make sure your toner cartridge is full and you finely sand and clean the surface of the plate for better results. Use a permanent marker to cover holes if any and tape to cover the backside. I recommend covering the edges with permanent marker, since the toner tends to flake, rub with the finger all the plate after the toner has been applied with some water to make sure it's firmly attached.
It's the cheapest and simplest way to do that without a cnc.

Fuckin 60's circuit boards man, I'm trying to do a total recap on this stereo console, but at this point I dont know if its even worth the headache.i have the schematic and service man, but still. I've worked on 70s boards MUCH better than this.
>each board is hard wired to others making individual removal inpossible
>capacitors wired to resistors
>caps hiding under other wires
>no clean organizaton

PCBs were new. They were still half in tag strip mode mentally. Take care because some of those old pcbs fall apart easily.
>>1038163
This has plenty of strips, which I shoud've expected but still surprised me. I downloaded the schematics before I bought the unit, and it seemed straightfoward until I saw it for myself.
To replace all the caps would cost me about as much as I bought the console for. Debating to just buff up the wood, re lube the record unit and dust out and reselling it. I love recap jobs but this concerns me
How does diy like this stuff? Cost around $100. I plan on buying the clear coat as well. Any tips or advice? Or should I just take it back? Looked up videos on YouTube which resulted in a few videos of guys just blabbering about how they hate it. I have plenty of experience with painting and such (I'm a maintenance tech) but not really sure about this product.

Dunno about that brand, but I put the rustoleum version down in my garage ~10yrs ago and the basement ~3yrs ago.
The garage I did the color coat and then topped it with the clearcoat+traction grit. It wore very well, it's only just now starting to chip off a bit in areas that I'd expect (right along the expansion seam of the concrete). The clearcoat does yellow in direct sunlight though so the 3/4" of the slab on the outside of the garage door looks odd. I'd have stopped the clearcoat at the door if I had known.
In the basement I just did color+chips. The chips flaked off for about a year, which was annoying but didn't really affect the finish. Even so, I'd still do the clearcoat again given the choice (I was worried about slipperiness but eh, fuck it.)
Both of the finishes do the job they needed to do exceptionally well. I can hose down the garage floor and wipe up oil spills with a paper towel. The basement is where the catbox is and if they occasionally miss the box, same story.
9/10 would recommend.
Check contractors forums. I found many useful things on them consumers never know, like that "premium" elastomeric chain store roof coating is a sponge and a water trap. (Too bad I'd applied some to my shipping container, but it came off.)
Contractors know all so pick their brains.
>>1037899
Epoxy floors are rad (moreso in high glass white).
Like with most finishes, surface prep is key. You'll want to rent a floor grinder and/or acid etch (muriatic acid) the floor prior to application.
The coatings also come in solid and partial mixes depending on the desired thickness and hardness.
Garage Journal has a flooring forum that is really helpful: http://garagejournal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=20
looking for a beginner soldering kit to learn
i'm pretty fucking retarded and dim when it comes to technical shit
i want to eventually build guitar pedal kits and pro audio shit like preamps and tube mics
halp plox

guitar pedals are piss easy to be honest.
if you are too much of a newb to use protoboards and source parts you can get pcbs with parts relatively cheap.
if you got 10 thumbs you can buy kits with a predrilled chassis for a bit more.
kits are a good place to start, then go over to protobaords and cheap ebay parts later.
the diecast alu boxes are also cheap on ebay, aswell as jacks and stompswitches.
make sure you buy form a source that has a good buildguide if you don't feel confident about assembly.
pedalparts.co.uk is a good source, i dunno about burgerland sources.
I'd also recommend getting/building a simple pedal powersupply so you don't have to fiddle with the stupid battery connectors and worry about space for a battery inside the box.
batteries get expensive in the long run anyway.
9v wallwart is fine, just make sure its centre negative, it not, cut the lead and swap 'em.
>>1036604
What do you mean by soldering kit?
You looking for a little project kit with PCB and components or are you looking for a soldering iron / station.
If you mean an iron, don't bother with anything cheap or aimed at beginners, they'll be absolute shit.
Don't get one of those irons that plug straight into the wall either, the heat can't be regulated and they just constantly use the same power.
So when you actually go to solder something the tip of the iron loses heat and you've to wait until it comes back up again.
Get one with a station that you can adjust the heat on
I came from Norway from a hike, and I managed to drag a decent piece of pretty white quartz with me. I want to drill a hole into it to put a lamp into it to create some ultimate hippie pussy magnet, anything I'm missing about the process?
Diamond drill bits, starting from small bit and going up incrementally to a good sized hole seems like a good idea in general. I probably want to cool the piece with running water while drilling into it, would that sound about right?
Don't know much else what to make sure when starting to drill, all I really know I don't want to end with a bunch of quartz sand having dragged the rock quite the way from atop a decent sized fell.
Just put it on a little light stand and ur done
>>1036297
As in, make the light come at it from just underneath, no hole? It's not quite clear enough to make it work nicely like that.
Might not be the best piece of quartz either but hey, it's my piece of quartz which is what matters.
Diamond drill bits can be quite expensive, especially large ones, id recommend using a small drill bit (which would decrease the chance of shattering) to make a ring of deep holes that are quite close together, then using a medium bit, widen each hole so it connects with the neighbouring hole in the ring.
once youve got the ring complete, its a simple matter of removing the 'rod' in the center by drilling a slightly shallower hole down its centre and then tapping a thick nail into the hole to shatter it
So I goofed today:
The power was out today so my garage door did not open and I did not have my house keys on me so I tried looking for my spare keys which were in a hidden fake sprinkler.
Here is where I fucked up:
I had my lawn resodded a few months ago, and completely neglected the spare key and it rained hard just a few minutes ago. So I had to claw the mud up to find it. So I eventually find a sprinkler head and start pulling at it and finally twist it out (attributing the force I needed to the mud sucking it back in) only to realize that it was NOT my fake sprinkler head that had my spare (it was a few feet away) but I actually twisted out a whole real sprinkler unit, (pic related) which is still intact as far as I can tell.
So my question is: Can I replace it myself easily without fucking the whole irrigation system up and if so, how? I have all day tommorow but it's late now. Otherwise should I hire a professional (I really am avoiding that option) to fix it?
Tldr:
unscrewed a whole sprinkler head by accident now I need to put it back in how do I do it without fucking my irrigation system up?
>>1040307
when it's light, go dig out around the sprinkler a tiny bit. They come apart in to four or five pieces a filter and a spring. It's not really that complicated. You'll probably figure it out just looking at it for a second.
They aren't super strong. Check the part you pulled out, you might have broken the bit that retains it in the sprinkler head. It's not a big deal to replace, just go down to home store and buy the thing and unscrew your old one and put the new one back in.
>>1040311
It's the whole unit with the spring and everything contained inside of it, it's an open pipe right now I think.
Pic us the hole I dug out with my hands earlier like a tard, there is nothing significant left in there.
So I take a shovel to it and dig it even more tommorow till I can see where to screw it in flush the system by running and put the sprinkler back on, yeah?
Pics of the sprinkler to come.
What type of paint could be on this doorstep? I need to redo it.
Floor Paint
Google is your friend. Use it.

Red. Maybe green. Most definitelly not yellow.

>I need to redo it.
Are you going to repair it before painting?
I've got some work ahead of me where I need to look at my phone a lot but keep my hands free, so I'm trying to work on a setup where I can mount my phone to my wrist. The tricky part is I need my phone to have vertical orientation. Like if my forearm was horizontally in front of me, the phone would be vertical, as if the phone and arm made a little cross. Kind of awkward looking, I know, but I'm not making this for everyday use.
Most arm and wrist mounts for phone are made exercise so the phone rests horizontally, which isn't what I'm looking for. There's a wrist mount kit you can buy, but it's expensive and doesn't specify which phones can be used or if it can be tilted vertical.
My idea for this was to get a phone case that has a belt attachment, and then buy a wristband with a gap for the belt attachment to connect to. It's kind of like what you see in the picture. the problem with this example is the "gap" on the wristband is not the direction I need, and if I just bought that my phone would heave horizontal orientation. Is there a technical term for the "gap" and "belt attachment/loop" I'm referring too? The easiest solution would be to buy a wristband with that gap going the other way, but I have no idea how to search for something like that.
I know how to use a sewing machine, and with the materials could buy a wristband and then attach something to make my own gap that I could connect the belt attachment to. What do you guys think about this?
>>1040233
That looks retarded
Why don't you just use a regular mount and turn on auto-rotate
I have a membrane keyboard w/ backlight (trust gxt 280)....can i change backlight colors?

It can be done a few different ways. You have to pull it apart and look at it to decide

I didn't see a thread on the subject and I just have a small question on the subject. So might well make a General
I got a set of these, they say they're cast aluminum and I want to get them cleaned and in a condition it's usable. I've read cream of tartar and hot water with plenty of scrubbing and that did clean it up a bit. Is there anything that would work better?
Here is a picture of the set. There is a base they go on when using, but that's the same material.
I'm also curious if I should do anything with the handles. They're solid and don't have any issues. Just wondering if there is something I could use to protect it a bit more that can handle a bit of heat
>>1039989
>cast aluminium
I'm no expert but it clearly says iron
>>1040001
They're trying to trick you. It's a cookie iron. The box it came in specifies cast aluminum. It's also way to light to be cast iron.
For /diy electronics. doesn't matter if it is chink crap.
Will post projects later.
ebay
>>1039967
Ebay or aliexpress but be prepared to wait a month for your stuff if you're buying chink parts.
So far I haven't gotten a single faulty component which is surprising. Resistors, LEDs, ICs, LCDs. Everything well within specs.
Unlike the local suppliers which are 10-20x as expensive and ironically less reliable.
>>1040072
Good to know thx.
Yes I'm not unknown on importing components, did it for years but I only had 1 supplier but it went bankrupt.
Haha Lcd's have (atleast for me) almost always been a bad investment. One time I had 3 PSPv3 screens broken in package, but to be fair they compensated me quite well but still. Another time I was sent the screen sheets... Not with the chips inside or anything just the sheets.
Hi, all. I’m an aspiring locksmith. I’ve bought myself the kit and a whole bunch of practice locks. I’ve been recently practicing lockpicking my locks in my house. One such lock is a deadbolt and normally I don’t have any problems with it but when the lock releases, it gets stuck. I’ve posted the video to show what I’m talking about. I’ve unlocked it from both directions, but it always gets stuck.
>>1039913
bump, no locksmiths on this board? I think its because theres a extra layer of security that prevents the key from turning. Does anyone know anything about this?

How would you design cannons for naval LARPing?
Been bouncing around a few ideas, such as somehow making an extra-powerful airzooka which we stick flour in.

Lubrication.
>>1039699
wd 40... or rub a candle over the slides...
vasoline would probaby work too
basically any kind of lubrication....
probably not motor oil though, at least not in large amounts...

silicone spray, white lithium grease spray, or mineral oil are my small scale lubricants of choice. Any of them should work well in a window.
