It varies country to country, and even state to state. As a general rule of thumb, in the US. you could've sat for the CPA (to become an 'accountant') with any Bachelor's degree. I believe, they tightened the restrictions recently, and now you have to have relevant business experience/internships before sitting for it. best bet is to major in accounting, as it will provide you the best background in knowledge for licensure, although any bachelor's, particularly in business/math, will work

It could be a long, difficult process to get anything at all from the mechanic regardless of the fact that it was under the table.

Why is your commute so far? And why are you buying a trailer? You might want to consider just using the money for an apartment close to campus if you don't have a job that's keeping you in your area.
