What are some remakes/re-imaginings of classic games that are also retro themselves?

I think you're getting "remakes," "sequels" and "spin-offs" confused.

>>3421779
Nope, IV and X68K are both considered remakes of CV1.

Only Tetris can market itself as the exact same game you already have and still sell well.

/vr/ is probably one of the boards with the most knowledgeable people in terms of programming etc because of the people doing ROM hacks.

As a kid I didn't have the patience for this game. I'd always hit an obstacle because I only cared about going full speed rather than playing it properly. Nowadays WR is pretty comfy except for the, ugh, ice course.

The game probably streams music from the CD and your rip is missing it.

How do I not suck at this game? Playing the netlink edition with the official saturn wheel, and all I do is spin out and hit walls.

Easy turns can be done while at full gas.

For sharper turns, break and let go of gas, then try speeding up once you need to get back in control.
>>
>>3421353
If you've played any arcade racing game or GT4 you shouldn't have much of a problem

Have you ever played a game on a console and thought, back in the day
"Man, if only I could play this on the go, this would be so much better"?
Now that emulation allows us to do this with perfect accuracy for every retro console ever existed, what are the games you think improve when you can just bring them with you?

For me, it has to be the entire Harvest Moon series. Doing the farm chores feels so much better when you're on a bus or on the go, and it's less daunting when you're living the game as "Let's just do a day or two" instead of the way doing weeks at a time could make the game monotonous real fast.

Final Fantasy Tactics also made me feel the same, but soon after I played it, Advance came out, so it solved my issue.

>perfect accuracy for every retro console ever existed
Wew lad

Basically, games with monotonous game play and incremental rewards. That's already where you're going with Harvest Moon but in general roguelites would probably be good to pick up and put down over and over again over the course of a day. I'm thinking Azure Dreams, Thousand Arms and shit like that. Elemental Gimmick Gear. At least for me. Other people will probably say short-duration puzzle and pseudo sport games but those aren't really my genres
>>
>>3421262
You'll laugh, but at first I was introduced to Harvest Moon with portables.
>>
>>3421262
I think strategy games in general (Turn based, not RTS) lend themselves to be played outside much more.

I've always found doing several missions in a row in such games really mind-numbing, but most fun when done as a way to kill time, just 10 minutes once, then turn off the game until next time.

Advance wars is a good example of a very good strategy game that does that, although it's already portable.

We're always going on about the "Retro Experience" playing on actual cabinets or old CRT monitors, whether they be emulated or actual boards and cards.

What about VR based experiences? Is stuff like this and Sega's new FE for the Genesis/Master System Rom a viable alternative to collecting a ton of hardware for stuff you might only ever play a couple times?

Is VR porn a viable alternative to a girlfriend?
>>
>>3421362
Well, I certainly wouldn't be spending money on a potential bitch, viable? Probably, pathetic? Yes.

But in the case of games, they're still games, inside VR or not, but I think such would depend on perspective, collecting a bunch of hardware that you might need to maintain later, even though great is not necessarily a good thing because of the space it requires, besides the endless hours of fun, it can also be a frustrating activity in some areas.

What are some retro games that used procedurally generation to overcome technological limitations?
9 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Roguelikes are an obvious answer.
>>
>>3420889
My favourite fact about Elite is that it was originally planned to be much bigger but the publisher wouldn't have any of it.

Anyway, there's Rescue on Fractalus which used procedural generation to create craggy mountains.

I'm sure it takes a little while to get used to, and it's fucked up that some of the menu boxes are switched around in the sequel, but I have to agree. Also, the animations for some of the boxes are hilarious.

A man said this about Chrono Cross when it came out.

>Chrono Cross totally rocks! The game mechanics can be described thusly: Take every system Square has ever made, throw them into a blender, squeeze in some cool element stuff... which is a LITTLE like LoD's, put it on full frappƩ. Amazingly enough, it's simplistic, strategic, and fun. Heck, I don't even really miss EXP, MP, or the initiative meter. Oh, and yes, it DOES have the same feel as Chrono Trigger.

Can he still be right about this or would even he change his mind and become embittered with CC over time?

>>
>>3420698
It wasn't in a review actually.
>>
I loved Chrono Cross's battle system. It encouraged strategy and collecting of abilities over straight EXP grinding. My only complaint is the battle music is absolutely horrible (in a game with an otherwise god-tier OST) and some of the spell animations could get exceedingly lengthy and were unskippable.

ROM hacks on par with or better than the source material.
this one's the latter

Super Zero Mission is pretty great and mostly on par with genuine Metroid experience.
>>
>>3420626
Yeeaahhh.... no.

As far as romhacks are concerned, Minus infinity is great, but in the world of romhacks, only a handful of people can grasp the concept of level design that can make a stock game great.

Schwa's romhacks, like SMB3's Chaos Control or Gadget Master for MMIV, are the closets I'm seen to good classic level design; even then they're still flawed here and there and are made with the assumption that people already know the original game really well (rightfully so) which completely changes how you make the levels.
>>
SMB 3X is surprisingly good. Maybe not absolutely on par with Nintendo design, but pretty damn close for the most part.

Sadly, most ROM hackers seem to share the "hurr, imma make muh hack stupid difficult (even if i can't beat it myself) lest other rom hackers think of me as a lame loser" attitude.
