Is there any information on the early history of Castlevania (86-90)? I'm really curious as to who actually made the series. Who wrote the story?

Nothing in English seems to exist. Is there any material in Japanese? I checked through shmuplations, and the earliest date they have is 93. Nothing on the first three Famicom games.

Isn't it sad that one of the biggest and longest running gaming series has its origins surrounded in mystery?

One thing to note is that Simon Belmont's design seems to come from Conan The Barbarian film. Yet again, we see Arnold Swartzenegger influencing game design.

I'll give you a bump out of curiosity.

Not a lot of info out there about the director of the best castlevanias

Well I did it again. I dropped $80 on a copy of Cratermaze of all games on the TG-16.

It was never something I was really dying to play, I'd much rather get Chew Man Fu or Bomberman 93 although I think Mega Bomberman is better but just because it's so rare to find them in the wild anymore I picked it up.

I have this compulsion that unless it's something I flat out don't want, if I don't get something when I do see it that it could be years, if not prohibitively expensive by then, if ever at all that I see it again.

It's happened before. For those of you on /vr/ who still do bother with the real article, what are some of the titles you've picked up on a whim? Did you end up liking them or regretting them?

I paid what I thought was a lot at the time for Tron Bonne, but it's worth like 5x that now and it's a pretty good game.

Same thing with me and Panzer Dragoon Saga. Thought what I paid was stupid at the time($150) but now its worth $500 CiB.

Out of curiosity, why do you think Mega Bomberman is better?
I have both and the PC Engine/TG-16 version just looks like it blows it out of the water in most categories, it looks better, sounds better, and has less slow down.
However you're not the first person to say this but I hope you're the first to give me a reason to give my Mega Drive copy some more play

tfw there will never be another Megaman game, hack or otherwise, as good as Rockman 4 Minus Infinity and you've already played it

I wish there were more 2D platformers during the 5th gen. I heard Astral and Mr. Bones are pretty good. Are there any other good 2D platformers from that gen? Excluding Mischief makers

Abe's Odyssey and Exoddus for ps1 is fantastic, one of mye favorites growing up, and still holds up well today.

You can play through them killing everyone (pretty easy, but still kinda fun) or trying to save all the good guys (a fucking challange)

>The Japanese version is better
Is this rule true for most retro games?

No, unless you nitpick stuff like minor censorship, or dialogue changes in RPGs.

Hi, SJW.

For some reason, the japanese version of Sonic Adventure (before the International re-elease) manages to be worst than the western version. It was so glitchy that I had to buy a american one to finally finish it.

Alright /vr/, you can only own one Sega console for the rest of your life, but you get it's entire library in physical form. Which do you pick and why? I'm leaning towards saying Saturn but Mega Drive is a close contender.

Saturn. Not even a question.
>>
My gut says Saturn.
>>
If we're also restricted from playing any other Sega console's games in any other form, I'd say genesis, otherwise I'd say Saturn

I wasn't sure whether to ask this here or /v/, but I figured it was more retro than not.
I've been debating picking up an everdrive md for my genesis, since the mega everdrive is just plain too expensive. I noticed the chink clones of the everdrive md are almost half the cost of one, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the chink everdrive clones. Do they last longer than a few writes, comparable compatibility, or are they absolute shit and I should just spend the extra money?

>>
Mine bricked itself pretty quick but it sounds like most people don't have any issues with theirs. In the end you get what you pay for I guess.
>>
>>3410403
So its the usual chink knockoff roulette? Fuck, I might just spend the extra 30$ for the lifetime warranty, then.
>>
As far as I know, the "Mega Everdrive" (~$140) is the only one that supports save states, so I'm probably going to get that one.

I like being able to play for 45 minutes and switch to a different game. My days of 3-4 hour long gaming sessions are mostly at an end.

Question to those anons who've actually tried to enjoy this console: Is it really that bad? Are the side effects of nausea, headaches, eye strain, etc true. Any ways to prevent? Best way to play it without being in an awkward position? Is it actually worth owning if I like the games, or stick to emulation?
22 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>3410370
I played it once at a convention, and I didn't have any of the "side effects" that are typically associated with the console.

>Best way to play it without being in an awkward position?
I'd say sitting at a table, leaning (not hunched over) into the eyepiece while having your hands/arms placed on the edge of the table for support.

>Is it actually worth owning if I like the games, or stick to emulation?
Sure, if you don't mind the price. Also, consider that you won't get the 3D effect through emulation, and the controller is pretty unique in its design, so it may not control as well with a gamepad that isn't designed in the same way (similar to using a modern gamepad as an N64 controller).

>>
>>3410370
I've owned one since back in the day. I never got nausea or bad headaches from it though you do get some eye strain from extended play as you would with any video game. There are a few decent games for it unfortunately its short life means that the library is very small. Last time I pulled it out and played it about a year ago it was working great and after about 45 minutes the left screen started getting bars on it. I've read that this is common as they get old because they cheaply attached the ribbon cables to the displays with glue which goes bad as they get old and loses connection. I can't even open the thing up to see if I can fix it because the security bit is too recessed for me to get to without ordering an extra long bit. Now its back in the box taking up space in my closet, what a shame.

It's a really good game, but it's just a little too easy. For kids it's a fun romp
>>
>>3410340
It's good but it's too short and a little too easy. I'd probably put Paper Mario 64, Thousand Year Door and SuperStar Saga in front of it. Maybe even Bowser's Inside Story.

Haven't played the other Mario and Luigi games so not sure where they would rank.

I am about to go on a 3 hour round trip journey to pick up a Commodore 64 complete set, computer, monitor, disk drive, boxes, and manuals for $120 Canadian.

Up here monitors are usually 150, the computers are also 150, not sure what the drives go for. And those are without box or papers.

What else should I look to get after the main machine? I mostly work with my dos 386 and XP 486 when retro gaming. This is my first jump into 8bit computers.

Out east Ontario.

Why bother with the monitor? If he's just throwing it in, then fine, but it's not at all necessary. The only microcomputer I'd bother buying a monitor for is a CPC.

Alright so I'm looking to play some more Crimson Skies like games and Air Power for DOS came to mind.

So far I got it to run via Dosbox, but outside of the intro tune for Mindscape and the menu music there's no sound.
Has anyone managed to get this thing to run properly? If so what are your settings?

It feels fun, but it needs a bit of setting up with the controls and all. Too bad I can't find a chart with all the keymappings. Doesn't seem to recognize the X52 I have either as opposed to other games.

View controls are not all that great and it's a shame that all the fighters have the same cockpit without any sort of gunsight.

But just the idea of commanding a fleet of zeppelins and fighting between them in one of those fighters is enough to make it fun. At least for me.

I'm going to try this on my dos machine soon.
