Why are female protagonists considered an innovation?
>>3430879
so you'll make threads about them

>>3430879
They're not. "Strong" female protagonists that need no man and fight patriarchy are the innovation. Back in the day female protagonists just fought shit and kicked ass, now they need a politic agenda behind their actions or they're being misrepresented by the cis white male gaming industry
>women were relegated to princesses and eye candy in retrogames, always doing what males wanted
>yet Alis from Phantasy Star ordered badass extraordinaire Odin and that faggy famous mage around like they were nothing and they never had any issue with it
Anyone emulate some PC-88? Favourite games? Any particular set up? I just installed M88 (unofficial 2013 build) and gave Hydlide a try, it's pretty neat. I had some issues with the sound being crackly and weird, but turning all the checkbox options on in the settings seems to improve it for the most part.
I prefer Hydlide on the X1 for the scrolling.
>>3430846
I still haven't really looked at in depth comparisons of the different versions. Are there any good games that are best on or exclusive to PC-88/98?
>>3430848
On the 98 there's too many to count but the 88 is often outdone by the 98 or others.
There should still be decent exclusives, particularly if you have a thing for Japanese adventures of that time.
Post retro games that are really similar yet different

Athletic World for NES is short but exhausting. Definitely one you should get if you got a NES Power Pad.

NBA Jam, Ken Griffey Major League Baseball, NHL 94, and the Mutant League games are fun
Anyone know where to find retro games for non-ripoff prices?
I'm in London, and have been to a couple of charity shops and one market (Brick Lane) but have found nothing. Planning to go to Nag's Head market later in the week.
Ebay prices are too steep to buy multiple games from.
There was a charity shop near me about 5-6 years ago that was selling boxed SNES, Mega Drive, NES and Master System games for £2 each but shut down moved somewhere else.
>>3430632
Have you been to the one in Streatham? It's no cheaper than the internet though because...well, they've got the internet but it's a solid jumping off point even if it's just to browse. There's one near Walthemstow Central too, just down from Nandos
>>3430640
No, but I'll note these down.
Does anyone remember the Sunday market that used to be held where the Olympic Media Centre is now? Did they relocate or disperse after they got shut down?
I'm not sure what you think non-rip off prices look like. I can tell you right now resale stores will be shit. Charity shops will be picked through every day. Your best bet is to come up with a list of what you want, and keep an eye on ebay. Not any of the "buy it now" bullshit marked up to ridiculous levels, but watch for auctions and try to grab shit for cheap. Even then though, you're still talking being able to nab shit at about 75% the going rate. Beyond that, it's luck of the draw finding the coincidence of circumstances where someone both doesn't know what they're selling, and no one else having snatched it up.
What is the best replacement on the interwebs?
No gamecube-stick garbage.
I know these exist:

No idea about others.

Are gamecube sticks that bad? They look smooth and comfy, but I've heard having on fucks up your aim in Goldeneye and a few other things.
Reminder that if the sky looks purple, your TV is calibrated wrong.
It's also how I judge the quality of emulators.

Any reason to play Soulblazer or Illusion of Gaia before I play Terranigma? Other than release order, but from what I understand there's only vague connections between the 3 story-wise and from I've read, Terranigma is by far the best. Unless I should save the best for last?
>>3430315
I actually prefer Illusion of Gaia. But yeah play them in whatever order you want.
You'd be missing out on the best game.
>>3430315
Play Soul Blazer before you do anything else for sure.
Illusion of Gaia is a little bit hit or miss, it's a very strange game with a sort of odd and surreal type of storytelling. It's like Gulliver's Travels and Charles Dickens and the story of Buddha all wrapped up together.
On the other hand, if I were to be forced to liken Soul Blazer to anything I'm not sure I could. I'm not sure I'm really aware of anything like it. It's some sort of creation or apocalypse myth, or maybe some sort of heroic saga, or simple love story, or cautionary tale about the abuses of power. I almost can't even liken it to anything else mechanically, it reminds me of Gauntlet, of Ys, of Zelda, but isn't really entirely like any of those.
You can enjoy playing Terranigma without playing IoG or SB, but if you play them in order the appreciation of everything that Terranigma is will be enhanced significantly.
Where do I start with rpgs? Should I play a series in chronological order no matter what the scores are for the story or should I jest play the best games from various series?
>>3430242
"Best game" tends to be highly subjective so Id say play them in numeric order so the mechanical advances of later games don't spoil the older ones.
plus it's always fun to be "in the know" whenever there's a shout out or easter egg.
Play the quintessential RPG, Dragon Quest III
Any recommended series?
So with this system can I
>plug in Japanese cart
>play game with English patch
>backup rom, patch and save to micro sd card
>plug sd card into android device
>load up game in emulator, save
>Then plug the sd card into system, plug in cart, and continue where I left off?
And do this relativity seamlessly?
Do you want to bring shame over your family?

Don't question my insanity
>>3430234
>>plug sd card into android device
>>load up game in emulator, save
>>Then plug the sd card into system, plug in cart, and continue where I left off?
>And do this relativity seamlessly?
HAHAHAH then WHY should i have to insert a cartridge to even play this fucking emulator?
if i had cartridges i would buy a real console and not an emulator that requires cartridges, that's ultra retarded.
What is your favorite team composition for Final Fantasy 1?

I'm a traditionalist. Fighter, Black Belt, White Mage, Black Mage. Yeah, I swap out the Thief for the Black Belt, but that's because Thieves suck.

-No class change for that sweet, sweet Magic Defense.
-armor bug alows 3 ribbons and a proring while keeping 50 defense
-free space for all spell casting items
-Oh, and each member of the team can one-hit Chaos.

How do you get FM audio on this when there wasn't a Japanese version?
Trying to run this on Fusion 3.64
In mednafen, change region to domestic and sms.fm to 1
Am I seriously going to need to use a different emulator? Fusion is supposed to have good SMS emulation.

Anyone have any pop culture references to retro games from when they were contemporary?
Here's a screencap for the music video for "So Caught Up In You" by 80s southern rock band 38 Special.
If anyone has any info about these arcade classics it would be appreciated.

...you want old games appearing in old movies/series? that's really not that hard to find you know
I'M SOOO CAUGHT UP IN YOUUUUU
LITTLE GIRRRRLLL
Damn, this game is incredible. I'm loving everything about it.
Only problem is, it runs a bit slow, especially when there's tons of ships on screen. I'm playing the GOG version, which runs it through DosBox.
Is there any way of running it smoothly, or at least faster than this, without having to adjust emulation speed with ctrl+11 and ctrl+12 in the middle of a dogfight?

Wcnews.com has wonderful tech support guides for running all of the Wing Commander games on modern systems. Here's a link I would try first:
http://www.wcnews.com/techsupport.shtml#wc1
Wing Commander is in my top 5 all-time favorites. Try the Secret Missions add-on and the sequels. You can even transfer your pilot data over all the way until III or IV, I can't remember which.
cycles=4000 to 5000 seems to work for me
one thing i really fucking hate about WC1 is landing the ships and how random damage seems to be
>>3429973
On that link, obviously skip to #14 since you have the Gog version.
