Any airport security here? What's the most embarrassing thing you've seen in a person's baggage? Have you ever had to publicly check it? How discreet are you checking it?

Alternatively, what's the most embarrassing thing you've ever brought with you on your travels? How did it go?

(this is a thinly veiled 'should i bring my weird thing on my trip' thread too)

I'm going to Prague for a four day trip with a friend, apart from tasting the Czech beer and going to the mandatory sightseeing, what should we check out?

Active programs are fine, we can't dance for shit so nightlife-wise we would prefer bars and the likes. We would like to avoid the baths and saunas.

the old centre is beautiful as it is. I always tell people that the best they could do is just wander around, get lost in the streets of the old town and eventually just settle down in a nice pub (or by the river if it aint too cold outside). As simple as it sounds, you would be suprised how pleasant an experience can it be.
pro tip: rent a pedal boat on the river and crack some beers while on it

Definitely hike up Petrin Hill to go to the top of the observation tower there. It's a great walk so don't take the gondola.
The marionette theatre is amazing. I saw Don Giovanni there and not only was the performance on-point but it was really funny. Seriously worth considering even if you don't like opera.
Go to one of the medieval taverns for supper on one of the nights. They're pretty expensive but the entertainment alone is worth it. (Pirates fought on top of the tables, half-nude fire-dancers practically sat on me, and the music was great.)

>Petřín Hill
This. Loved this place as a kid. I used to love going to the observation tower and mirror maze on the top, brings back tons of good memories. We would then hike down the hill towards the city where we would get something to eat.

I also have to second walking through the old city and discovering it on your own. The architecture is beautiful and finding a nice pub to sit down after a while feels really good. Just be aware that there are a lot of tourist traps unfortunately as this city is unfortunately a victim of excessive tourism.

Another thing you should do, if you want to do something original and if you have the time to do it, is to go one day in the Czech countryside and check out one of the many castles in the country. Personally, I'd recommend Trosky and the Český ráj. The landscapes are gorgeous and there aren't that many tourists. Dunno about the language barrier since I'm Czech but there might be a language barrier if that's a problem.

Hi /trv/

What kind of backpacks are you using for travelling? I am thinking of buying pic related as it has all the features I need
-waterproof
-anti-theft
-25liter pack volume
-black / dark colored
-pockets for quick access
-ergonomic
-can wear it for commuting with business clothes

My only concern is that it looks maybe a bit too feminine.

it is this bag actually:
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/joey-the-backpack-that-gives-your-body-a-break-design-travel#/

So do you have any other suggestion for a backpack that would fit all the above expectations?

I like backpack threads. I think I spend more time researching this shit than actual travel plans.

I got this on Amazon for about £30. It's alright I guess, but I'm never satisfied with a backpack and I'm always thinking about how to reduce hassle and annoyances

been thinking about the Osprey Farpoint 40, but there's always something that keeps a bag from being perfect (eg, the useless bottle pockets and the zipped inside pocket with no sections to keep stuff apart) and £100 is a lot.

My camera bag and waterproof jacket, which is pretty packable by waterproof standards, are always the things that bulk it up. Plus a lot of small things like toileteries and chargers

I do want to stay with a carry-on luggage size and opimtise everything.

IMO 25 is too little, though that's subjective. I also hate top loaders, just creates hassle.

I have no problems with top loaders. my main problem is I guess that I am also doing too much research, therefore have not found any bag that would be perfect but probably I do not need a perfect one. Anyway pls someone recommend me a better looking one with similar features. thanks

This might be an odd question, but what's the best tech or brand these days when it comes to hiking backpacks?

I suffer from hyperhidrosis, so a pack is usually misery within a very short amount of time, but I've also never tried some of these newer techs.

Looking at a 30-40L bag basically.

As a Brit, is it at all possible to move here legally without marrying someone from the US or being really rich and investing? Green card lottery isn't an option apparently as there are already too many people of British descent in the country.

Any expats? What advice do you have/how did you do it?

Is it an alright place for a gringo to be?

Which areas should be avoided? Where I would be staying is in the city centre.

A lot of people seem to go to Costa Rica.
I do not know why, I've never heard anything interesting about it.

There's a sorority on campus that sends all it's pre-med girls there for a semester to take pics of butterflies and vlog about their vegan diets.

Greetings /trv/, im from Portugal. 21yo and im going to stay on Greece (Volos) from September to January. I will have just enough time to travel, and I would really like to go to Istambul or Egipt, and of course, all those balkan countries.

1- I want to make all these trips cheap as possible, so the bus might be the best option? (any of you know nice long way bus company that works in these countries?

2 - How hard it is for me to get into Egipt and Turkey? How really dangerous.

3 - Any nice full guide one Greece? More directed to architecture if possible.

OP here

* How really dangerous are they (Egipt and Turkey). dangerous as in for a turist.
>>
>>1266159

I'm not to sure on some of your questions but this one's easy,

>2 - How hard it is for me to get into Egipt and Turkey? How really dangerous.

Apply for Visa's before you travel. Egypt is completely fine. Turkey is as well, just dont go around doing stupid shit in Turkey, use common sense and you'll be fine.

Good luck finding a bus from Greece to Egypt lol
>>
Egypt is potentially dangerous, the outbreaks of ethnic violence are far trickier to predict and avoid, especially as the civil situation deteriorates. Depending on what you look like you might want to avoid certain coptic neighbourhoods.

Turkey is completely safe. As the above poster said above, don't do stupid shit and stupid shit won't happen to you. There are plenty of charter routes around the Balkans and into Turkey.
Might be worth finishing up in Greece rather than finishing there, but I think you can get a cheap ship across the Med to Istanbul.

Has anyone been to this part of Africa before? Any advice you could bestow upon me?

I lived there for 10 months so I can give you some advice if you can ask more specifically.
Take chapas and not taxis, always ask locals how much they pay for sth then insist on paying the same.
Mulungu means white boy in Changana and some other common local languages, you will hear it a lot
Learn some Portuguese if you can, it will make your life a lot easier as most people speak no english, especially outside Maputo.
>>
>>1265996
Oh, just realized the diving part so I will just assume you are going to Inhambane or sth like that, the locals call it the "country of good people" and they are right, you will have a good time

Go to the Kitty Hawk Kites store. Kites and beach toys, hang gliding lessons and excursions, water sort equipment.

If you get over to the mainland, visit Sanitary Restaurant in Morehead City. Good Carolina style fried seafood, plus you can amuse yourself by contemplating that implication that the Unsanitary Restaurant must be around there somewhere.

The Lost Colony outdoor drama is goofy and dated as fuck, but the Outdoor Historical Pageant/Drama in the summer was a big cultural thing across parts of the Carolinas, and is dying out. If you want to experience it, go do that I guess.
>>
Disregaurd first poster; he's only right about the lost colony sucking. Skip kitty hawk kites and go right across across the street to jockeys ridge. I'd also check out Nags head woods. I think the huge water park across the bridge is open now, but I'm not sure. Uh, you could also go back to collington harbor and go to the little private cut they have back there (give them a random name at the gaurd gate).. Anything else you'd like to know? Born and raised here
>>
>>1265676
have they added vendors to the crowd on JR? Last time I was there (some years) if you wanted to do more than watch, you'd need to trek back off the ridge and across the road to KHK to sign up for anything.

And of course, if you want to do kite surfing or tandem hang gliding or anything, that's all over at the store.

Also, are you seriously advising against eating at the Sanitary, if you happen to be on that side of the causeway?

i'm looking to visit the amazon for the first time. my focus will be on wildlife, birds and the forest itself rather than river tours. have done some research and it seems like peru might be the best place to see it.

has anyone done the amazon? any advice? anyone gone to tambopata?

in 2014 and 2016 i went on safari to kenya and tanzania and it was incredible, got some great shots with my basic nikon and a cheap long lens. this time, unfortunately, i will be flying solo as my friends are in europe while I now work out of miami. makes more sense to go somewhere new than spend money flying back to see them.

cheers /trv/

Every time I tell people I'm going travelling by myself they find it weird but then also hasten to add that its "admirable" and that I just don't care about what people think and just go by myself somewhere

I've never been great at making friends (even at hostels) and didn't want to wait to get a bestie in order to travel.

Am I strange?

Same thing happens to me too, especially if it's a coworker who is an older woman.

That's why I just keep this shot to myself now and never talk about it. Sometimes if I get really pushy co-workers or customers that continue to pry into my life, I just lie and say "nothing" or "I'm going to Disney World." The latter will get me time off but then I have to continue the lie by making up activities that I did in this place, which isn't super hard, but a pain anyway. I wish they'd just leave me alone.

Also, why would your customers ask you about your private life?

Gotta agree with this, stayed in some expensive places and basically never had a good time. Went to some low key hostels or just simple Super 8 hotels with a good location and had just as good of a time.

It's basically one giant anime convention with better sushi than you can imagine. And cute Asian grills as far as the eye can see. Every one of them ready, willing, and able to fight over the chance to get a taste of your gaijin meat.

That's just if you stay in Tokyo. Right before you leave the city you're assigned a companion fighter shibe, and stereotypical annoying, but hot, female sidekick to keep you company while you explore the rest of Japan. Super helpful if a rogue samurai attacks you.

If you do survive the samurai attack, be sure to claim his sword and helmet. Turn these into the nearest Yazuka recruitment center and you'll instantly get membership. It's okay if you don't know Japanese. They have a great language learning center.

Just go, you'll have a great time. I promise.

What's on your bucket list?
Although it is not strictly travel, I imagine most things on the list get completed whilst travelling...

Mine are as follows (from memory without digging out the actual paper list):
-Ride in a hot air balloon
-Cage dive with a great white shark
-See a hammerhead shark
-Gamle $1,000 on roulette in vegas
-Ride a sleigh pulled by huskies
-Have a 3some with a 2 girls
-Go to Octoberfest in Germany
-Make my own cocaine and try it
-Visit all 7 continents
-See all "7 new wonders of the world"

I have not included the items that have already been completed

Offtopic, but it has always been weird to me to read/listen 7 continents.

Where I'm from, Spain, everyone talks about 5 continents (6 if you count the Antarctica), but no one splits America in two.
