I think I finally figured out how to express why I like 3d6 in order so much.
A lot of people use D&D as a sort of escapist vehicle, and I'm no exception. I feel that for a lot of people, it's a kind of power fantasy. But as the DM, that's really not compelling for me. Every day I watch people accomplish insane things that I'll never even be able to dream of doing. When the olympics comes around, I can see incredible feats of athletics that I can never aspire to. I can go to any library and find books written by intellect far greater than my own, that I can't even hope to comprehend. And every day I'm besieged by an army of charismatic wheeler dealers, trying to sell me things I don't need or convince me to vote for them, or believe whatever.
None of that is compelling to me. We live in a world obsessed with optimization. Everyone is left to fend for themselves, and if you're not in the top percentile of humanity in your chosen field, sorry, you don't make the cut. Onto the street you go.
I don't find those attitudes in my games particularly inspiring. I love 3d6iO because it's not about creating an optimised character, or even really about creating a character. It's about creating a family. A group of people desperate enough to band together, and brave dangerous adventures. Yes, maybe the thief doesn't have a 20 in Dexterity. But You've been through so much with him, and formed bonds through blood and suffering, and you would never trade him in for anyone else.
That's what I find inspiring. The idea of treating the characters as actual PEOPLE. Not just pregenerated slates with prearranged weaknesses, but people that have formed bonds with others, and wouldn't sell each other out for the world. And to me, THAT'S a fantasy that I can escape into.
Anyway, that's my perspective on it. Thoughts?

Point buy is my favorite because d&d is, at the end of the day, a game. The kind of dynamic you're talking about is great if you're more of a roleplaying group ir even just writing a story, but I like everyone to be on the same level power-wise.

The crippling issue that 3d6IO has is the same issue that all standard forms of rolling stats suffer from: Bad luck at chargen can mean your character is objectively worse than another and IO makes it worse because you can both get shoehorned into the same archetype. That's just straight up antifun.
Personally, I've had luck fixing that by using only one set of rolls but having each player get a random order for them.
For example, I'd roll 3d6IO and get [11,8,14,10,7,12]. Then each player would roll d6s to determine what order they got those in. Everybody gets the same numbers, so nobody's screwed by the dice, but each statline is distinct.

How would you envision the events of King Arthur if he were but another of the Emperors alias' during this time?
Perhaps Merlin was Malcador himself, or a psyker the Emperor had recruited. Excalibur, the grail, and other relics were objects imbued with his psychic power. Perhaps Morgana and Mordred were the Emperor's bastard sensei.
Camelot might have been one of his attempts to guide humanity through chivalry, morality, and psychic powers. What lesson did he learn of mankind.

I was listening to Blind Guardian a few days ago, and decided that their music could, if multiple albums and concepts are taken into account, serve as the basis of a campaign. Hey /tg/, I'm working on a campaign right now and I could use some help. It's pretty Lovecraft-y and a major plot point is a cult on a small Siberian island that frequently sacrifices virgins to the sea for breeding with fish-folk, as a result most of the island is pretty Shadow over Innsmouth esque. The cult is being investigated by a young Russian photographer turned naval cook who shipwrecked on the island.
What are some weird rituals or creepy set pieces I can use to ruin this guys day?

The people in town net up a huge amount of fish from the open, toss them around like a hot potato, and then throw them back into the say. Each says a prayer over the fish.
Strange glowing lights out in the open ocean you can see from shore. None of the people in the town will acknowledge that its there.
Torn up old city map. When pieced together it has a road that is now sunken. Following it underwater leads to the fish-men's lair.
Sea foam collected in giant metal drums. Every single house has an identical metal drum.

I'll keep this short
My players have fallen into the possession of a local inn/tavern. I kind of wanted it to be a home base/hub for them to use. They have an innkeeper who will take care of all the day-to-day work needed to keep it running so they don't have to worry about anything else other than the fees and materials needed at the end of every month
What are some upgrades and additions I should offer the players for their inn? I want them to build it and run it how they see fit
