Hey /out/
A REI opened up near me recently.
What's /out/'s opinion on REI?
They have awesome warranties and membership programs but those benefits are built into their costs. Not sure if I would trust their bike mechanics.
They try to do everything so are not really good at anything IE they have a lot of breadth but not a lot of depth.
A lot of what they do is sell overpriced clothing to people who wear it shopping or dog walking
Their staff ranges from super knowledgeable to clueless.
They will try to sell you stuff that you don't want/need because it is overstocked
However, they are the only brick and mortar store of it's kind in my area so I go at least once a year.
Get the membership
Does anyone else become an alcoholic when they can't get /out/?
Getting drunk is for college kids. I'm an adult.
No

Who else is itching for the start of the season? What are you hunting with and what for?
Using a savage MkII for rabbits and squirrels and looking to do some fall turkey hunting with my bow.
I had a successful small game year last year so I'm trying to branch out to other game. This will be my first year attempting a fall turkey hunt. I know it's a lot different (some say harder) than spring turkey hunting. I've read that calls and decoys don't work as well and the name of the game is early season scouting to find where they congregate.Any tips or pointers for fall turkeys?

Really? No one else here counting down the days to the open of the season?
If I make a prim tech bow and use it to hunt shit on my property will police give me shit because I don't have my hunters?
I've been pretty busy this summer and didn't think of hunting season. I guess I'm abut a month and a half to waterfowel season here. Thanks for the reminder.
Hey guys, just wanted to share some images of my favourite hobby!
It's hike-a-biking. Carrying, and pushing to the top of mountain summits around me and riding down. Mostly Alberta, sometimes BC. Generally about a 800 - 1000 m elevation gain, usually over only a mere few kilometers (steep!).
Basically, my hobby leads me to some pretty incredible moments, landscapes and locations and I've just been exploring hard all spring and summer this year, so here's what that looks like.
Anyone else feel free to post in high-altitude, or at least some aesthetic images from your own areas of exploration!
I'l just start with a few of my favourite shots... and keep going if anyone cares or whatever.
Hi /out/ I need help complying a two day camping checklist. All of the ones online seem too extensive for a simple weekend trip for five adults. Also these online lists seem to be for cold weather so I need something for my location.. We're going to be tent camping, grilling, and tubing. Possibly hiking. As for entertainment we are all very musically inclined so guitars and my sticks are a must. Any advice on what to bring is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

>Tent
Clearly, you're going tent camping
>Sleeping bag
>Stuff you want to eat and drink, enough for two days
>Three gallons of water, one per day, one to put out fire
>Means of starting a fire, matches or a lighter will do
>A lightweight tinder, paper is an easy/cheap option
>Means of putting out fire, water to extinguish, shovel to smother with dirt
>Change of clothes + appropriate time of year jacket/coat
>Raincoat
>Hat, baseball cap works
>Flashlight
>Some kind of bug repellent, smoke can work but only for so long
>Sun screen
>Trashbags. Do not be THAT group.
All of this is to be packed for yourself (minus the tent, anyone could bring that), and should not be relied upon someone else to bring it for the group. Be sure that you're prepared in case everyone else fucks up.
If you're sticking to a groomed campsite you can reach from the road, that's really all you need. If you're going hiking, you SHOULD prepare by having more important essentials essentials: first aid kit, spare water, spare food, "survival" stuff like that. That's why most of those lists online are so long, is it is also preparing for the event of something going wrong. You SHOULD prepare for something to happen to you or one of your friends, but if it's a morning/overnight/evening trip it's "not as important."
As for tubing, water isn't my forte because I'm a pussy and hate/fear/respect open and moving water. I imagine a life vest is going to be legally required anywhere you go, so a life vest at least. Maybe water shoes that won't come off your feet? I'm no help here.
Also, check your areas' fire risk. A lot of places are having dry spells and are tinderboxes for wildfires. Build small fires, and keep an eye on your grill at all times.
This list is only what I could think of in a short amount of time. As a last note, tell someone you trust where you're going and for how long. It's a guarantee that someone will come looking for you if something happens.
Yay! Thank you

pretty much this although imo don't need a shovel
if you're bringing cooking oil, fyi olive oil has spf 15 to double as sunscreen
I just got back into biking, and unfortunately can't afford anything better than a shitty Walmart bike. I put a speedometer on it though just for shits. My problem is that it hurts my legs like fucking crazy when I try to speed up over 16 km/s. Will I eventually get used to it? Or is the bike simply too heavy?
16 km per second is pretty fast...
>16km/s
Teach me senpai
Holy shit OP, you can go Mach 46? I'm pretty sure you must be the fastest thing on earth right now.
Does anyone know where the darkest and coldest place to live would be? That's actually inhabitable? I'm thinking Alaska, Finland, Iceland, Greenland ?
I love the cold and when it's cloudy/dark. Puts me in such a good mood, and I feel at ease.

I remember camping in the Norwegian winter when I was 12. Some days we got 24 hr complete night and other days 24 hr complete daylight.
This is Alaska. It was over 80 on this day.

I'm not much of a gun goy but I have been considering getting a rifle for survival trips / hunting rabbits / coyotes / pest ctrl. I've been looking at the AR7 .22 henry survival rifle (pic related) I wanted to know if there are any rifles for small game that I should consider before pulling the trig. Should I skip the AR7 and just spend more money for something that is better?

>survival trips
Do you mean camping, faggot?
>>828001
Ruger 10-22 takedown.
>>828001
I had one and it's a total piece of shit. It will only fire certain ammo, even then it jams every few shots. The sights are so bad you can't hit anything beyond 20ft. The only way to get better sights is with a scope but then you loose the ability to store it in its own stock, which is too fat and feels wierd.
>>828013
This. Or a Marlin Papoose if you can find one.
Are you Australian and interested in participating in group buys?
Also I guess if you're not Australian and want to do group buys shill for that in this thread too.
>>827988
Yeah mate. Depends on what but anything to knock down the fucking ridiculous prices we get over here.
>>827988
count me in
This is a great idea because pretty much anything i find at a decent price ovetseas suddenly becomes about the same as overpriced gear here.
newfag here, been taking day hikes for weight loss and shit and been considering overnight camping/weekend whatnot. total beta so looking for single person cuz no friends/grill.
i'm midwest so venting for heat is a plus but also something for snow and cold weather if the mood strikes. i've never bought a tent so i could use some advice. i'm also pretty tall at 6'5"
>>826876
2 person tent
Or be a hammock fag
>>826877
better insulation or because of my size?
>>826880
Even regular sized people often find single person tents uncomfortable. And two normal people should get a 3-person. Hammock will be nice for the heat if you like that sort of thing.
I need a new hunting / travel / hiking / backpacking backpack. What should I get??
Pic related, it's the one I used for years but it's starting to show it's age with the MOLLE webbing is fraying and the zippers are starting to come off.
>>826153
posted this in ur /k/ thread. maxpedition pygmy falcon ii. its a pretty good backpack, ive had one for about 2 years now. not made in America though, which is a bit of a downside.
>>826153
I have a cabelas instinct frame pack...and it's not bad for multiple nights...but I think a guy could do better for the same amount of money.. (about 350)....there are new packs out with carbon fiber frames that I'd be interested in checking out

Are there any gay guys here who do camping trips or outdoor stuff? It would be nice to go with other gay guys. Not even just in a sexual way but just to be around similar people.
>>824293
Given the lack of /out/ women I'd imagine just going with any group of /out/ guys is gonna get freaky. Just a guess desu.
>>824307
I'm not trying to get freaky as much as like lets say listen to cheesy euro techno while we canoe.
>>824293
My friends and I aren't gay but we always mess around on our trips /out/.
Hey /out/ Got a 3 day hike coming up. Looking for some easy light weight breakfast ideas. Also has anyone had experience bringing eggs on a trip like this? Are they good to not be refrigerated for so long?
You can have lightweight or you can have eggs. Personally on a three day hike I'll have a very heavy breakfast the first morning with corned beef hash and eggs, but there are decent freeze dried solutions also. Have fun!
>>821429
I hunt with a guy who assures me that if he doesn't have eggs for breakfast he will die. So I have watched him haul a dozen or so eggs up many mountains many times and he gets by ok.
There is no real need to refrigerate eggs. They'll last slightly longer if you do but there would be no detectable difference over a 3 day hike. My buddy eats them after a week in his pack and they've never put his guts in a bad way.
>>821429
Eggs don't need to be refrigerated at all, ever. They don't even last longer when refrigerated. You can keep them for weeks.
