What's /out/'s thoughts on music while innawoods?
Pic related, what I bring out after a day of hiking (worth the weight)

Playing music and making noise in general is one of the best things you can do when making camp to deter predatory animals from visiting.

Out approved/10

>celtic/instrumental master race here

I play guitar in a local park sometimes, either on a waterfall or ontop of a few different rocks by a lake. But I can't bring the thing out camping or something which s a shame.
>>
Depends on what the music is

The Microphones and Mount Eerie are nice while innawoods

So I'm thinking of getting pic related (8 3/4'' micarta handle) as an all-purpose knife for camping / skinning small game, my question is this: are there any draw backs to using lockblade for these activities? Why aren't all knives lockblades? it cuts the size in half making it far easier to pack.
11 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
it's basically impossible to sanitize the hinge area of these blades. ...something to consider
>>
>>827459
Can't you just dip the whole thing in boiling water or alcohol or something?
>>
>>827459

op here, wow I never thought about that

are lockblades generally regarded as a bad hunting / cooking knife then?

How do I just go /out/? I hate my neighborhood and get bored really fast. I would go camping, but what would I even do camping? I'll lurk this board for a bit, but so much info, how can it possibly keep in my head? I hate being a basement dwelling dweeb who goes outside to buy snacks.

.... just go. Wtf are you doing here. Pathetic. Go figure it out
>>
step 1: turn off computer
step 2: go outside
step 3: find somewhere nice to hang out and sleep
step 4: come home
step 5: ruminate on your trip and how to improve
step 6: repeat

Its not fucking hard ffs these threads are so retarded.

Anyone here into motocamping? I find myself wanting to buy an old 80s Japanese cruiser, throw some gear on the back, and go /out/. Any tips/tricks/warnings? Tell me your stories so I can live through you.

Loaded my Bonneville and took a trip from San Diego to Moab, Utah. Was an amazing time.

>tips
I like what I did:
-Cargo net over milsurp back on my banana seat
-strap additional gear via the backpack's straps THROUGH the cargo net.
-D-ring other shit to the bag's molle strips also through the cargo net.
-tank bag is a given
-Random milsurp pouch niggarigged to my handlebars.

>tips
-Make sure theres no metal shit on your gear that may chaffe and fuck up your moto's paint. eg: metal buttons or fasteners
-ZIP TIES
-Zip tie the fuck out of everything to hunker down your gear to the bike. Stops stuff from shifting around and being shitty. Buy a pack of 100 or more and go nuts.
-be a ziptie whore each time you reload the bike
-Do all scheduled maintenance early. (get your oil change/tire change done before the trip)
-bring lots of chain lube. You're gonna want a smooth ride.
-Riding through the hot ass desert, when taking a break at gas stations, throw your jacket and helmet in their ice chest outside.

Hey /out/, I'm usually on /k/ but I figured I should come here for advice.

I've recently gotten interested in going camping innawoods, so I'm wondering what sort of gear I need in general and to survive. That, and what should I look for in a ruck, and how should I organize all my shit?

I think looking at what Light Infantry packs would be a decent place to start, but you guys are pretty much experts from what I hear.

If you just got interested in /out/ you shouldn't spend too much on gear. Buy something cheap. If you find out you really like /out/ then only buy stuff that you really want/like.

Even for a dayhike think in advance, what you're going to do? What you're going to need? In addition to that you should have some basic 'surival gear' to get you out alive if everything goes wrong. That includes some sort of rain cover if you don't have a tent (a tarp), a way to start a fire (a bic lighter with esbit tablets or something) and a way to boil water for drinking (a metal container). Maybe insect repellent depending on where your going. You're on /k/ so you probably know how important a good knife is.

>what should I look for in a ruck
that it fits you. Everything else is a matter of preference.

>Light Infantry packs
>Infantry
Do as you like, but /out/ generally prefers gear made for out, not for war.

>>822895
Look up "the 5 c's for survival"
Start small.

Survival in normal living conditions is really child's play, that's why there are things like the boy scouts.

Stay in your backyard for a day with a pen and paper. Write down what you need as it comes to you. I know it sounds stupid but nature will give you the answers.

10 mins in; hmm it's awfully hot, I should dress light
30 mins in; hmm it's awfully sunny I should bring a hat/shades
4 hours in; hmm I'm awfully hungry, I should bring snacks

I'm busting your balls a little but I'm not lying.

Alright /out/, let's have a firestarting thread
What do you carry to start fires while /out/?

Also, I'm interested in learning how to reliably start a fire in the rain, I recently went backpacking and couldn't get a fire started due to lack of dry kindling and wood
Is there a way around this?
79 posts and 21 images submitted.
>>
Bic Lighters and a ferro rod.

And as fat as finding dry kindling when it is wet you could learn how to feather sticks. It is a really useful trick even when it isn't wet.
>>
Ignition source? Lighter or storm matches most of the time. I have a Flint and steel but mostly for emergencies.

Tinder? Birch bark works great, old man's beard, pine cones/needles if dry enough. If I'm bringing my own dryer lint or cotton balls with some vegetable oil. If it's just a backyard fire I like those little paraffin and sawdust nuggets you get at the hardware store.
>>
>>819056
Cheap matches are my primary way to start fires. It's just quick and convenient.

Storm matches in case the weather is incredibly shitty.

I also carry 2 cheap lighters as a backup because shit weights nothing.

Backup ferro ferod, too.

>>

It's powder you dolt. And there's no palm oil in it.
>>
I drink it a lot as a student, need to get one that's just add water for /out/ings, though. It's pretty useful, keeps you going for a while but most hot drinks do that.

I need an inflatable pillow. I have a small Kelty camping pillow, but even folded in half it isn't enough for me because I sleep on my side.

I'm planning a camping trip on my motorcycle, so I figure an inflatable pillow combined with my Kelty will do me well. I just came back from a 2 night outing and it was miserable because my single pillow isn't enough.

Space is a concern, weight is not an issue.

I don't carry much in the way of clothing since I just wear leather riding gear and under armor.

What do?

Typically if I use a pillow at all it's my camelbak. Dual purpose.
>>
>>827859
DESU if youre bike camping, just bring a regular pillow, unless you know its gonna get wet. then you can go to a fabric store, pick up some pillow material, and some light/ outdoor type fabric. its what I did, I don't like crunchy pillows.. or really plastic ones, always feel like I'm going to suffocate in my sleep.

HECK, if you don't have the skills, and are state side, paypal me the $ to cover the materials and shipping, and ill sew you up a nice one, with its own stuff sack.
>>
>>827868
A regular pillow is pretty damn big. Space is a I don't have a ton of space. Or are you saying get a normal (throw?) pillow and a stuff sack?

A custom pillow might be a good idea. I'll experiment with the pillows I have in my house and a stuff sack.

Has anyone ever done any prolonged hiking in Iceland if yes?

How was it?

I want to do a hike where i walk from most southern part to the most northern part of the island.

Iceland is not mentioned in Walkopedia top walks and i cant find a lot of material about my goal ... although there is some little material and on youtube a few people did the walk.

For example there is tons of material about the Kungsleden, but there is not a lot of stuff about the Iceland crossing, although its like a similar thing.

Brahs, help me out. Is this a good idea. Anybody done this before? and can recommend doing it? I need a thumbs up from at least one pro.

I've never been to Iceland to hike, but I have heard some stories about it (so feel free to shoot me down if I'm incorrect). Apprently you need to take into account that winds can be/ will be pretty strong, so make sure your tent is storm proof. Next, the Laugavegurinn trail is beautiful, but also potentially tough (due to weather) and more and more people are hiking it. The westfjords are very remote I heard, and you could use the bus on the one highway in Iceland to go there (or anywhere near the coast really). Finally, take a look at this site: http://www.northernadventures.co/
