Do you guys ever try to make a Nelson Trapper backpack by yourself?
I'm trying to make one. If you guys can share some tips that would be great.
>>832532
Why this style? I've contemplated this, but thought a A frame or a basket pack would be simpler and lighter. Not tryin' to say you're wrong just wanna debate.
>>832532
I make shit in the toilet, why make that too?
>>832532
Like for fun I could see it. But theres so many options with durable fabric/sewn by industrial machines /lightweight frames that I wouldn't use one after that initial trip to see if it worked.
But I do custom auto upholstery so if you're having issues I'll help where I can.
What fire starters does out use.

Great movie btw
I bought a couple of sets of store display fishing lures this weekend, and I can't really find anything about them online. The spoons are from 1987 and the cranks are from 1994. Does anybody have any kind of idea what the value might be?
Here's the pic of the cranks.
idk like $5 at a flea market?
looks like promotional material they'd send to a store
For pic set i would guess 250$ .... Just because its new. :)
I'm looking for a career option that combines my love for the outdoors, travelling, and studying electromagnetic forces.
Any of you have ideas? Best I've come up with is studying lightning chasing storms.
>>832412
Start working on your doctorate and have that as your thesis project and try to get funded.
Are you even in college for undergrad electrical engineering or physics yet?
Op here on mobile.
>>832427
Yes, actually. Electrical engineering. I love the material, but so far I don't see it coinciding much with my other big interests.
First visit to /out/ so play nice
I am doing the expedition section for the gold D of E award, in the Peak District (as me and my group are poor fags and we can't go abroad)
4 Days and 3 nights + a night at the beginning after travelling, and we cannot buy any food whilst on expedition, in a group of six people.
Any tips/advice/stories from past experience?
>inb4 underage b&
Started award at 17 but 18 now
I've finished mine, did it in Dartmoor and the Brecon Beacons
What are you wanting to know?
General tips
>break your boots in beforehand I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH
> Have dry socks for each day, your feet will get fucked up if they get wet
> Use the right clothing material. Dont be retarded and hike in jeans, cotton also sucks in my experience. others may argue otherwise.
>Make sure you know how to set up your tent before you go. If you try and set it up for the first time in twilight after youve walked 20 km, youre going to have a bad time
> People will get grouchy walking 20km a day if theyre not experienced, dont hold it against them
> Pay attention to hypothermia/heatstroke signs, it happens
> Stay fucking hydrated. I go through liters of the shit. Little things you can drop in your water to make it taste better/add electrolytes(tm) can help as morale boost
> You can make your own trailmix with raisins/nuts/M&Ms and graze as you walk, the rest keep you fueled and the m&ms give a good happy boost when you get one.
> Dont bring shit you dont need. It might sound like a great idea, but youll be regretting it on day 3 when your feet hate you
> Use a drysack (or trashbags etc) to keep clothes etc dry. nothing sucks more than trying to sleep in a wet sleeping bag. seriously. keep that shit dry. If using trashbags, double bag with the ties at different ends
> Dont fucking litter OR I SO HELP ME I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN
> For the first night you can freeze a meal beforehand and let it thaw out during the first day. Bolognase works well.
> You want light and compact food, whos main weight is the water you add when you cook it. Pasta with sauce is a staple, along with porridge for breakfast. I found taking cured sausages that are pre wrapped (like the german stuff) and adding it to lunch/dinner made it taste a lot better. Also jam can help flavour the porridge, its pretty bland. Can get jam in soft packets that packs well for this
> Beef jerky is fucking awesome. Makes farts fucking awful. Lols with guys, awks with girls at 18
> Couscous for lunch in packets, make it each day at breakfast
> Come up with a team name, helps morale
> Umm
> You will sing stupid shit as you go. Have fun and learn some sea shanties before hand to confuse locals for lols
> OH
> Use zinc oxide tape and put it on your feet if you feel them rubbing (getting a hot spot). Do this as soon as you notice it and you wont get blisters, as the shoe rubs on the tape instead.
> Have fun
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, let me know if you have any questions. gl op

It finally happened, I encountered a boar this weekend. It was male and I was lucky it got scared by me so it ran away. Nonetheless I shat myself because it got pretty close without me noticing.
So in my country it is illegal to carry loaded guns without being a licensed hunter. Even if you are, you have to carry the rifle and the ammunition separately and you are only allowed to load your weapon when you are on a deer seat.
There is a pretty cheap way to carry a loaded "bobby pistol" (don't know the English word, translater gave me this) with pepper ammunition. So my question is: Do you guys think a peppershot can defense myself against a raging boar? I know those fuckers are tough as hell but maybe pepper will fuck them off because of highly developed smelling apparatus or something
I'm asking /out/ because I believe you guys are more familiar with animals than /k/ and I'm open minded for alternate self defense options if you know some.
>>832296
>bobby pistol
You mean a blank firing pistol? You'd probably be better off with mace or bear spray.
>>832296
Make your hiking stick into a boar spear. Seriously.
>>832296
If you are going to use capsicum spray, buy the big cans for dealing with bears and skip the silly pistol or whatever.
I'm a noob and I want to camp in nature for some time, then never do it again.
I thus bought a tarp to make a cheap tent.
Yesterday I tried to build it up to see how it goes. I managed to make something okayish, closed on three sides. The picture is only distantly related. I could sleep in there, have room for my stuff, and I can touch the sides, the sticks and the strings without it falling down.
This morning I went to check on it and it was still up. Problem is, the inside was all wet. I don't think it rained, I think it's all condensation.
Is there something I can do about it ?
>>832269
Someone's dog pissed in it?
>>832269
You could get a trash bag and cover the front of it. Tuck it under the bottom, go inside, and use clothes pins to pin it with the extra material. Not perfect, of course, but I'd bet it would cut a good deal of that dew. The door wouldn't be rain-proof, but If you threw an extra trash bag to hang down from the top over that makeshift door, I'd think you might have something that could work. I'd definitely try it out before going out.
>>832279
Closing it better reduces condensation ?
I was thinking that more aeration would help, though of course that would become a problem on rainy days.
I just thought about this : the tarp is white. Does it have an effect ?
I will be in Portland, OR for two nights, and I am looking for something outdoorsy to do as a date.
>I will have a rental car.
>Weekend most likely Sunday
>I'll have the whole day, but something within 2 hours please
I will later be driving down to Grants Pass, and want to take the scenic route, as long as its under 10n hours. See pic related for what I planned so far.
>>832172
Go to bagby
Hot springs, maybe an hour out of portland. Drive up is next to a river, beautiful area, hike in a mile and a half. Private tubs, public tubs, you can fuck in them (believe me most people do). Bring some candles and drink if you're gonna do it at night (best time anyway).
Trail in is easy.
I've heard that cascade head is pretty nice this time of year, you're going to be driving right by it too.
>>832217
Damn, sounds nice. Under two hours, and a hike.
Shit looks perfect!
Can you help me out /out/? I'm just starting out fishing and need the top 5 spinning reel brands to try out for bluegil and bass pic related.
>>832065
What are you trying to spend? You really can't go wrong with the major brands. Never used the Lew's in your pic but they look straight for ~$40.
Shimano, Abu Garcia, Pflueger, Okuma, Daiwa, Quantum. Just pick something from any of them in your price range that looks good and you won't be disappointed.

>bluegill or bass
Any reel. If you were fishing saltwater, pike, musky, or salmon it would matter, but you can reel in a 8 lb bass on any reel
Rod and line types are more important
Hey /out/, i recently bought myself a house with a very big garden, it's about 7000 square feet or 650 square meters.
Problem is, pic related, on the left side is an restaurant, it's just the parking lot for the workers, they annoy me.
So i decided to plant some shit there, but i just don't know what, i just want as quick as possible a nice and tidy hedge.
I thought about thuja, but they are too expensive and slow growing.
Ligustrum would be cheap, but it's still too slow growing for me.
I live in germany, so no tropical hedges.
Hope someone here has some experience with fast growing hedges or bushes, need to plant about 30 meters, if it`s cheap i will plant on every side.
here another pic from google, that in blue is where i need my hedge

>on the left side is an restaurant, it's just the parking lot for the workers, they annoy me
Why the fuck did you buy that property then?
Don't bitch about neighbors you knew were there before you purchased.
>>831659
Don't be a dick, he's just trying to build a hedge.
Hey /out/ what do you think it's the best sport to seriously get into it at late 20s and still have the capacity to be an above average athlete? Bonus points if /out/ related and an olympic sport.
>>831542
>late 20's
Any sport, you're in your prime anon.
I personally enjoy kayaking and I'm going to try out boxing this fall. My uncle played basketball until he was 35. I work with a 55 year old man who runs marathons and plays tennis competitively. Swimming is a great low-impact/high-intensity workout.
You can always join a beer-league baseball/softball team if you're trying to focus on the social aspects of sports. Golf if you're looking to keep intensity to a minimum. Frolf is popular in my area, too but it's mostly hipsters and college kids playing.
You're in your late 20's. You still have the world by the balls.
>>831542
bowling is the only option, or golf for out/olympic
You're too old to train your body the necessary muscles and muscle memory to be above average at anything by late 20's
>>831555
False.
Proper nutrition and training will bring you to the above-average level, but it will take longer than if you were younger - and any deviation from your routine will be a major setback. Still, it's not unobtainable.
Canada Thread
I'll start by posting some recent pics of Garibaldi, BC
In Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara uses some sort of stick light.
Is there an equivalent to an LED stick/baton light? It's not a glow stick.
Whatta ya know? After simply doing a google search for "LED Baton" I found lots of results exactly like what your looking for. Who could ever have predicted that would be the case right? Google isn't helpful at all with such obvious questions....
apart from what >>831397 said, it seems it's some kind of led-glowstick similar to what lazerbrite produces

So is all of Canada
A mostly untouched forest wilderness last time I heard.
Are there any Florida /out//out///out/ here?
Is this just the worst state to have any kind of hobby
>>831309
>Is this just the worst state to have any kind of hobby
I don't know. You can make a hobby out of anything.. like taking your young kids to a Disney hotel and seeing how many survive.
>>831309
It's not a bad place if you like fishing.
Aside from mountains and snow, there are plenty of worse places. Go somewhere in the midwest and see their vast /out/ wilderness full of soybeans and corn. Barely any goddamn trees.
