What does /out/ think of Scouting?
I think it's great for getting young kids interested in the /out/doors
Great activity not just for kids but for likeminded adults, who wish to gain outdoor skills. Even thoug it has drifted away from the way Baden Powell and Seton envisioned it, it still teaches cameraderie and overcoming adversity.
I put 12 years in as a youth and have been in as in adult since. It's a great way to get kids interested and to build build a network of outdoorsy friends. I go camping with a group of about 10 other eagle scouts on a regular basis.
Is Pokemon GO a game approved by /out/ ?
>>814662
all the people I have seen play this game just ride around town in their car. In what way possible could that be considered /out/?
No.
it's braveneworldish
Pokemons only spawn in cities and towns, not in places where no-one comes so no.
Post some pics of your outist life.
I'll start with few.
Some national park.
Crossing a large swamp.
Nice trail.

Any one with minnow trap experience?
So basically I bought a regular metal mesh minnow trap and a small mason jar style minnow trap. Every time I go to my local state park to fish, I use both traps and same bait (dog food) to catch live bait, but what's strange is that the mason jar one catches the minnows and the other one doesn't for some reason. My buddies tell me maybe the minnows are eating the bait from the bottom outside the trap and don't have to go in for the bait. What can i do? Any suggestions?
>>829672
this design looks really simple, if it isn't working the fix should come to you just by looking at it.
could also be bad luck.
Take some string and tie the bait in a way that it stays in the center of the cage? Like, suspended from two sides.
>>829672
The holes in the metal one are probably too large. I've had that problem with some that I made. You can use a bit of hardware cloth or metal screen to make the holes smaller and try it.
Suspending the bait using string also helps as >>829717 suggests. Just make a little bait bag from a plastic garlic bag.
Hey /out/. /lit/izen reporting in, first time on your board. A friend and I are going to drive over to Centralia PA tomrrow, get high as fuck, eat shrooms and camp there the night. The initial idea was to camp in Centralia, but I'm a little worried that we won't find a safe/legal place to park the car. Wouldn't want my friend to get tickets and/or towed for some stupid bullshit. So I figured we might rent a camp site in a state park 30 min east of Centralia (for when we get tired of exploring the town), leave our car there, hike out into the park and set up camp somewhere. Of course we'd rather just camp for free and do it in the town itself, but I'm not sure that's a legal/safe option.
So what I'm asking is, does anyone know any safe/legal parking spots/camping spots in Centralia? Have any of you camped there? Will we get bothered by police or are we cool?

Don't fall in the lava pits...
Many of us have camped out in the wilderness and called it our home for days, weeks and perhaps months. Would you say that this connection has allowed you to be more appreciative of what's around you?
Has your love for the outdoors and nature lead to a better caring of the environment around you? Has it inspired you to reduce your carbon footprint?
I'm simply curious to see what the mindsets and views are of other /out/ folk.
>>828750
Environmental management student here.
IMO the concept of community (with each other and with your environment) is key to people NOT fucking shit up.
Whether it's carbon scrubbing, picking up litter, using reusable shopping bags, buying a modern efficient car, or whatever, the actions require effort on the part of the person - and this is only done if the person thinks it's ''worth it''.
By feeling a link to the place you live (or to each other, or to the world, or whatever) you are more likely to place worth on those actions.
Basically we already have the resources, technology and manpower to 'fix' all our environmental problems. But the priority is on growth economy, generating profit and such like.
The only thing holding us back from changing anything is ourselves, our mentality towards it, the worth we place on it.
Of course its' not quite that simple because any advancements/changes we make must be viable within our society framework (namely, financially viable)
The psychology behind whether someone will recycle or whatever is the most important part.

I gained more respect and appreciation for nature, i certainly think twice how to leave it clean etc

Hey guys, I have a question.
My bikes inner tube recently got punctured, the one that it happened to was the standard, came with the bike cheapo inner tube so I'd rather not waste time patching it. When I pulled the inner tube off the wheel, I found the measurements "25 / 32 x 622" on there, and when I googled that it told me to look for a 700c inner tube that was 1 - 1.25 inches wide.
I picked one up and draped it over the tire, because its at least an inch or two too long, and a bit too wide. So I'm at a bit of a loss for what it is I'm looking for, as somebody who is new to shopping for bike tires / inner tubes, any help would be very much appreciated as my bike is my transportation to and from work.

Inertube is usually a bit bigger that's normal. When they inflate they pull the tire outward and seats the tire's bead into the wheel's bead-well
>>827814
ok booboo here's what you do.
>inflate the new tube outside of the bike to get some form
it seems like you got the right size, I checked the link and you should have the right one.
Don't be afraid to let some air out to fit it in, but installing a tube with air is 500% easier than installing a dead one
>AVOID PINCH FLATS
>do you have the right valve
Presta or Schrader? It doesn't say anywhere on the site, just take the old tube with you and make sure you get the same valve.
>is your valve long enough?
this really only applies to Presta, the skinnier, all metal except the cap style valve.
>go on youtube and watch a few tutorials on how to install a tire
I could try to 'splain it all but the video probly does it better.
best of luck homie.
I did inflate it a bit when I got it around the wheel, and there was still some hanging off of it, I also have a bike pump compatible with both valves, the old valves are schrader and the one on the new inner tube was presta. Its too dark now so it'll probably have to wait til morning for me to get a decent picture of what the inner tube looks like around the tire, comparing it to the old one though, its definitely larger if I lie them side by side.
Ausfag here I want to buy a decent survival radio.
I sort of did a quick google search and their a plethora of choices but what i'm looking for is something that is compatibly with Australia.
Some things i'm looking for
>Power sources
Basic AC outlet plug-in
crank
battery
solar panel
Rechargeable battery that can be replaced
>Ports
USB
Micro USB
Aux
I wanna at least be able to charge my phone with it
>Rugged
Splash proof
Dust proof
Long lasting
>Radio
AM and FM frequencies
NOAA weather and Environment alerts for Australia
SAME (specific area message encoding) customized warnings, watches and alerts for your county
Programmable locations
>Extra's
Light
Torch
Display is readable in the dark
Think of this as sort of wish list of features. Like I've found ones that meet these requirements but i'm not sure if the NOAA shit will be compatible with Australia. Think of it as something that will be left in the car in case of an emergency.
Budget ~$100aud
>>827031
Anyone got any experience with this shit? Is it worth it or are they just cheap chinese gimmicks?
>>827031
Why not get
>a charger or battery pack that does USB stuff
>a radio with AM/FM/WX
>a torch
then when you lose/break one device, you're not out all those devices.
I don't understand this "Put everything in one box" fad.
I have radios that do radio things really well.
I have a flashlight that does flashlight things really well.
Just seems like the sort of product you're looking for would be designed and marketed towards children wanting a toy and wannabe-tryhards.
>mfw my survival tool is b& in your country
>>827047
I get what your saying. But basically i just want a crank powered radio that can charge phones. The other stuff is more just a redundancy and handy as a back up.
The other stuff i already have.
The idea is you chuck it in the back of your 4wd and forget about it and you can use it as a back up for a back up.
In case something happens like a break down or some shit.
Also its convenient.
> Guadalupe Mountain National Park
> Big Bend National Park
Planning a trip to either one of these in a few weeks. I've never been to either one. Any suggestions? What are they like? One better than the other for this time of year?
I'm ~7-8 hour away, and planning a 3-4 day trip with a couple of buddies.
Are you in Mexico or something? Go to Utah or Colorado, being stuck in TX is one thing, actively travelling there to do outdoor activities is just a waste of time.
>>827023
I am in TX. Friend is visiting from out of state.
I visit CO a few times a year, so that's covered.
I'd say there is more to do in Big Bend. Guadalupe Mountain is nice and getting to the top gives you quite a view, but I think Big Bend is prettier. Both are going to be ass meltingly hot this time of year, just as a warning.
New ep tonight...and it looks like a good one,.
As usual...I'll disclaim that though this series seems inane and retarded, it is in fact pretty interesting from an /out/ perspective. Also, has bare asses.
>>826896
>Also, has bare asses.
So. Fucking. What.
>>826896
>pretty interesting from an /out/ perspective
Nope.gif
You want interesting? Go camping/hiking/etc for a week or more. Take a camera, shoot things (with the camera) that catch your attention. Post pics here when you get back. THAT'S pretty interesting from an /out/ perspective.
>>826951
bare ass is literally the cornerstone of human sex, and has been for perhaps a million or two years. gay or straight. that's why it's neat as a secondary observation. i guess tumblr asexuals wouldn't understand.
OH also, this is the /out/ board were outdoors topics are discussed and enjoyed, such as this particular show, and such.
thanks for playing
I'm trying to keep my camping tent cool in the summer for when the sun shines on it. Which should I use...
>pic related silver tarp
>same tarp in white
>industrial foil (the kind people use to insulate their attics)
I heard silver reflects more heat than white, but only if its metallic, not if its dull silver. Not sure if pic related is considered metallic or dull.
Here it is on amazon.

I hope you die from aids
>>826608
What are you using the tent for where this is a problem? Can't you just stay outside of the tent until it is darker or set up in the shade?
I just can"t imagine a scenario where you'd need to be hanging out in a tent under noon sun.
How are you planning to set up the tarp? Just throwing it over the tent or using it to cast a shadow on the tent? For the former you want a high albedo (white/metallic) and the latter you want high opacity (color won't matter).
>>826608
White, silver metallic will fade and be less effective over time. No need for any fancy stuff, if it's dry a bedsheet is your best bet.

i couldn't find any electrical tape nearby to back my reel so i used 3M VHB foam tape to back the 150 yards of 20 lb power pro braid.
so i'm noticing the action of my trick worms is completely different. i've got 15 lb mono and 15 lb fluoro to use for a leader to try and get back to the action i'm used to.
which line should i use for the leader, and how long should it be? what knot should i use? should you use different knots when tying mono to braid vs fluoro to braid?
i'll be googling this of course but i trust you guys will know.

I've been trying to catch some big cats lately and I'm just not sure how since I only bank fish. I caught this guy with a 5/0 circle hook on a Santee Cooper rig with cut bluegill but I was wondering if there were other/better rigs. Any tips?
I have created a map to decide once and for all which are the best /out/ states. The criteria I have considered are:
1. Amount of public land (National Forest, Wilderness, National Monument, State Park, National Park, etc.)
2. Accessibility to these areas, both in travel and legality
3. Variety (in topography, climate, outdoor sports, etc.)
If you wish to make an argument to have a rating changed
-do not advocate for your own home state
-give a qualifier for why the state is better or worse and how much time you've spent in the state in the outdoors
-posts like >this state >x accompanied with a stock image will be ignored

Oregon is cool too tho
I'm from Missouri but I've been to Michigan a lot and gotta say the UP is pretty insane. The whole peninsula is lit. I think it deserves more than a 4, especially with Isle royale national park. A lot of my friends have ferried onto that island and backpacked it for a couple weeks
>>825786
That set of categories if pretty bias towards the west. For example lots of maine is private land. But it's all timber companies and lip balm magnates. And they don't care if you go on their land.
