Hey guys
So as the title says looking for some advice on which kayak to get. Looking to stick around $500. Mostly for creeks, rivers, and lakes, but also wouldn't mind the option to handle oceans. I came here because everyone says different things, so what's the best single person kayak for around $500?
Also I should clarify, this isn't for fishing purposes, just recreational paddling.
Just rent a couple from your local kayak place.
>>828207
Well that's the thing, me and a group of friends go every weekend, and it's almost $40 bucks to rent them. At this point it's more sensible to buy my own.
Fuck society. Fuck technology I want to spend the rest of my life out in the woods. What's a good book to get started on?
>>828017
Book(s): the Foxfire series. All of them.

Hey all
Any beekeepers here? I live in a suburb outside Toronto, so we can't setup a huge operation, but we just extracted 17L of honey from our two hives (pic related). The honey is so much more fragrant and tasty than the cheap grocery store shit, which I assume is produced from bees that are fed corn syrup.
Post your hives.
Also - is it normal for bumblebees to try and crawl into the front entrance? Is this how depressed bumblebees try to commit suicide or something?
>>827765
Also, the big dark spots are not monstrous entrances, they are sandpaper we glued on to help the bees keep their grip on the waxed wooden boxes.
>>827765
I get my honey from one of two places. If im making a 3 hour trip west of me. Theres a huge place that sells like gallon jugs of honey. The other is these homegrown farm stands that show up on the sides of the road in different places that sell produce and honey.
So no point in me keeping bees.
But good for you. Glad ur enjoying the fruits of their labor.lol
>>827765
I am a beekeeper too since 3 years back. I have 2 big hives and a small one that i created earlier this year. Got about 20liters of honey this year.
Do you have big varroa mite problems in the us? I am in scandinavia.
Was /out/ at local State Park this past weekend. Comfy in tent watching some Netflix on my phone. Was right in the middle of that Sofia Vegara/Reese Witherspoon movie (Hot Pursuit) when my battery went critical. I carry a 3000mAh battery for charging my phone. Unfortunately I found out it can not power and charge phone at same time (only .5A i guess). My phone died and I could finish the movie. How do you sc/out/s charge your electronics? Is there a better option than a power bank? I could have paid $10 extra for a campsite with electricity but I thoight $25 was already pushing it for a campsite.
>>827715
>could NOT* finish movie
>>827715
500 milliamp should carry your phone. Gotta turn down your screen brightness tho.
>>827715
I turn it off. Only reason I bring it out is for emergencies.
-10 for watching movies innawoods.
>want to start an outdoor youtube channel
>film some videos, get super self conscious about every single detail
>have like 5-6 videos fully edited
>cant find the courrage to upload them because /out/ always mock outdoor youtube channels
why am i such a dumb cunt holy shit, should i just do it anyway and just not tell /out/ about it?
>>827099
do it
>>827099
You know 4chan is an anonymous message board right? Who cares if /out/ makes fun of you?
Youtube is full of cynical retards too. 4chan or not, someone is going to make fun of you. Deal with it
I think starting with 5-6 videos is a good move
Do it cunt
Do it, post it and let us make fun of it, then do more, get better, let us male less fun.....

Literally keep your head up and forward. Keeping your head towards the ground restricts air flow. Look with your eyes. Not your head.
Need a good deet free bug spray. Mosquitoes love me. Any recommendations? Preferably stuff that doesn't come off when you sweat.

Picaridin based bug spray
Spray bottle full of 91% rubbing alcohol will keep em away
I would prefer all natural
thinking of getting an anorak by G, fred Asbell. has anyone had any experience with their products? post your wool jumpers and anoraks.
you have to live in the woods to wear a top like that, or else you just look like a faggot
>>826382
Swanndri Ranger shirt has all the hippy wool bs advantages but it's cut like a normal shirt so you don't look like a wanker. I'd look at one of them first.

>Swanndri Ranger shirt
$120+ shirt
I tend to think of bushcraft/survivialist/nativist /out/ists as poorfags or at least frugal DIY types. But when someone like Ray Mears mentions a piece of gear they are suddenly willing to spend absurd amounts of money on it.
This shirt. Anything made of Ventile. Handmade scandi ground knives made of cheap simple carbon steel.
I recently returned from a trip visiting family in Washington state and discovered a passion for hiking. Upon returning I realized the lack of outdoors activities in my grassland state. So far all I've been able to do is hike railroad tracks from town to town, but it isn't very scenic. What are some outdoors activity worthy of my time here?
>pic related: my dog standing in a barren field
I've never really been to Nebraska, so I can't say I know what's available to you, but yeah no cool scenery kind of sucks, although I imagine in some parts the rolling grassy hills might be nice. I mean, for one thing, I suppose you could basically just practice some outdoor skills like camp cooking or firemaking, or you can meme-I mean baton wood or some shit, but yeah, IDK. I don't know where in Nebraska you live, but you might be able to try some of Nebraska and Wyoming's National Forests and grasslands http://www.fs.usda.gov/nebraska , but again, I haven't been to these ones, so I don't know how cool they are. But yeah, if trees and mountains are your thing (read "Washington"), Nebraska probably is not the first thing to come to mind.
>>826273
You could also possibly get into the motorsports meme: no scenery to fuck up means no guilt about using ATV's
>>826269
No, you didn't discover a passion for hiking. You discovered that you like pretty things, and you just happened to be in a state where most of the pretty things are scenic outdoors areas. I don't mean to discourage you from developing a passion for hiking, and I don't think there's anything wrong with just like pretty areas, but that isn't going to stop me from being frank with you.
Read some of the great nature writers and learn about why nature is great in and of itself.
But also, since I'm not a complete pretentious ass, I realize that pretty places are nice. Going to pretty, secluded places is expensive for most people. So you're gonna have to deal with that. Living in NE your best bets are probably to splurge and find a way to get to the Black Hills or Badlands NP in SD.
Soon I am going to go on an all night fishing trip where I basically kayak out to a giant sandbar in the middle of a semi-large lake, set up, and fish all night. I'm am very poor, and need to decide on what sort of light I need to buy. I was thinking about a lantern, but some of the rechargeable headlamps seem pretty cool too. What is the best and cheapest light for fishing you'd recommend and why? Sure, I have googled it and have my ideas, but I'm curious about yours.
fire
>>825748
Fire might not be an option where I'm going, and I prefer something I can wear on my head for kayaking at night.
$6 Ozark trail headlamp from walmart. Batteries last forever, cheap as dirt, plenty bright enough for anything except spotlighting sasquatch, and they hold up surprisingly well. I've taken mine on 5 or 6 trips and my clumsy ass hasn't managed to fuck it up yet. Buy 2 or 3 if you're worried, still cheaper than other lights that'll break on their maiden voyage
What kind of tortoise is this? Found on the northwest Florida panhandle. Peed and pooped prior to being handled
Ninja tortoise
Don't think its a gopher tortoise
Ok bros, Cali dude headed to CO for two weeks with my lady in a tacoma full of goodies. I have a rough itinerary but would like some last minute suggestions from locals or people with experience.
So far the trip will cover:
-Colorado NM
-Dinosaur NM (thinking of skipping this due to distance from any other conceivable destinations)
-Rifle falls SP
-Hanging lake
-Maroon bells
-Fish Creek falls
-Lone Eagle peak & Crater lake trail
-Blue lake trail
-Garden of the gods
-Bear lake trail, Rocky mountain NP
-Pikes peak tram
-Cave of the winds
-Great dunes NP
-Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP
-Bridal Veils falls
-Mesa Verde NP
Mostly looking for ideas for the last few days in Southwest CO where it looks like there is so much to do but I have no idea. Passing through Ouray, Telluride, Durango, Silverton, etc...
>fish creek falls
That's literally down the street from my house.
>>824041
Colorado is shit man, all roads are traffic filled, most campsites will have people and the trails are crowded.
Also the locals will treat you like dogshit, particularly if you have California plates
>>824041
>Passing through Ouray, Telluride, Durango, Silverton, etc.
Just don't go further than that and it'll be fine. The closer to the front range the more tourist filled it get, thus shitting up there experience unless you WANT the touristy shit. GoG is filled with Asian and Palmer park was more enjoyable IMO. Hanging lake is packed but the Carbondale/Glenwood are is nice at least. Cave of the winds is broken because built the stupid entrance that ruined the winds last time I checked. Pikes peak tram is kinda neat but less satisfying that doing the incline then taking the rest up the trail up to the peak if you have the lungs for it.
Been a while since the last time I was there but if you don't act like a douche nobody will treat you like shit so ignore that. Colorado is the current IT state though so it's not a completely unfounded notion
Chillin with a QT and drinking Constant Comment tea
>what did you guys do while /out/ this weekend?

Went for a hike innawoods. Found loads of berry plants. Filled my empty waterbottle with them.
>>821666
went innawoods only to discover there are absolutely 0 mushrooms at the usual spots where I harvested around 5kg last year in just 3 days. Calmed myself down with a nice view and watched the traffic down in the valley.
Also gonna go try for some new boots besides my Alpine ones that are too stiff for everyday stuff and treks.

Sup bros,
Just finished a couple day solo trip.
Was gorgeous but something really intense happened:
>day 2, pack up campsite, take everything and start walking along beach
>notice seal on the beach against the rocks
>come closer: it's real mangy lookin, coughing, wheezing, sounds like bubbling, coughs up mixture of blood and puss
>i kneel down and it opens its puss leaking eyes to reveal big black sad eyes
>it tries to move but doesn't have strength, closes its eyes and breathing is light
>i know what i must do
>i find a head sized rock, kneel back down and talk to it calmly
>consider what i must do, wonder if it can survive this sickness it has
>decide it can't, ask it if it's ready
>seal looks at me then closes its eyes slowly again
>it's time
>raise rock over my head and throw it squarely on top of seal head
>crunch
>one drop of blood on top of head, blood gurgles out of nose but slows quickly...
I felt sick instantly but feel like i did the right thing.
Anyone else encounter dying animals?
>be me, seal, sleeping
>snoring, having a peaceful time
>hear some sort of waddling approach
>giant blubbery human gazing down at me with curiosity
>used to humans being interested in me, no big deal
>human picks up a rock
>before I can react human slams rock onto my head
>last thing I see is this fat fuck waddling away, with some smug since of pride on his face
>mfw
Humans, not even once
Loling at you right now OP. You didn't form some sort of spiritual connection with the seal. The seal didn't understand what was about to happen. It was suffering and miserable and you put him down. You did the right thing, don't Hollywood it up.
Yeah, I've done this OP. I often check whether roadkill is still alive just to be sure it's not suffering.
I once found a wood pigeon which had its wing broken, I don't know how. I dispatched it humanely and cooked it up and ate it. That's how I found out how tasty pigeon is.
