I just watched lindy's video on the skinnerian psychology involved in modern military training and how it changed the way modern soldiers shot at their enemies vs soldiers from wars earlier in the 20th century. And this got me thinking, if it came down to it, without military training how many of you could actually shoot to kill?

Ive never been put in this position myself, but I have been in a situation where I thought with all my mind that someone was breaking in and without thinking I grabbed my gun and cleared my house. I only realized after the fact what I did and I dont know what to think about it.

What experiences has /k/ had like this, do you think you can actually shoot someone if it came down to it? If you've had to shoot someone, prior to the event did you think you were capable of it?

I think if it was a longer range engagement I'd be able to but if it was up close like room clearing type of stuff I'm not sure. I've never really killed anything before besides bugs and mice.

Bump for interest.

## Some thoughts ##

Training is Paramount, and not only when it comes to foes armed with firearms.

Think of how much training you need to properly hold the line in a shield wall.

When I larp, I keep making some stupid mistakes such as raising the shield too much. Just to name a thing training would correct.
Even so, at least I have a certain mindset. There isn't anything more annoying than trying to boost group cohesion and have a stupid motherfucker abandoning the line just because he thinks he can do what he wants in the middle of the mayhem.
I went to the point of thinking some people just don't get it. They are simply unable to press the pause button of their desires for a second and push the play button of their brains. People have this fucking tendency of thinking rules should apply to anyone *except* them.

Brief, aside from technical errors due to poor training (see above: Me with a shield), there are also disrupting actions on behalf of individuals who simply cannot stand still for a couple of minutes or have something to say every time they receive an order. Like, say, they have to comment fucking everything like old grannies at the bus stop... And if you say A, they do B. So you explain A, and yet they still do B.

I'm not talking people who are required to mount guard for 12 hrs. I am talking dudes who are supposed to hold a battle line for 3 minutes of their miserable lifetime.

Training is always the key.

Not that I have any issues with anything you said, but you didnt really answer my question. Do you personally feel that you would be able to take a life if you needed to?

As far as training goes, I am not unused to killing, from mice and bugs to chickens and such, I admit that I am desensatised to it because even as a child I wouldn't think twice about it as long as I wasn't cruel about it. I dont know how that mental conditioning would transfer to humans, but ive been ready before as I said in the OP.

Military fire fights. What is the average engagement range in Iraq/Afghanistan?

Average engagement range in civilian self deference?

Average range in SHTF scenario?

Is there really a point to a civilian training on killing targets at 500+ yards? Would you not be better off training to engage multiple threats withing 100 yards for you own protection? Not saying you may not have to take a long shot in a survival situation, but on average are most engagements for civilians are really close distances while the military usually is much further away? Again I understand military clear houses all the time, but on average don't they shoot much further out?

Post stories of close engagements and far out shots you have had to take for self defense if you have anecdotal evidence to share.

General engagement range thread.

>Average range of engagement innasandbox
This varies extensively depending on what you're doing. Outside the wire on a foot patrol for a few days, checking shitty mud huts? Anywhere from 60-400yards depending on when the target engages you\when you put eyes on someone with a gun you know is an EC.

>Average range in civilian self defense
Again, varies, but most civilian self defense shootings take place inside a home, or in a store, etc. It's very much close quarters like, 90% of the time. So maybe count that one as like, 6-15 yards tops? Within 21 feet if you haven't engaged or shot, you're likely to be punched\stabbed before you can if they're coming at you.

>Average SHTF scenario?
There's no average SHTF scenario if you're in the US. Are we being invaded? Are their zombies? You may need to camp a roof with a Remington 700 and plink people, you may need to clear a building with a shotgun. Irrelevant question.

>Point to civilian training at distance shooting
Yes, mainly for hunting or if you're qualifying for marksman shooting.

>Engaging multiple hostiles at once

Do not do this. Unless you absolutely have to, avoid engaging a force with superior numbers to your own (one of you, three of them for example) if armed. If you absolutely cannot find a way around, or the conflict is forced, find cover (not concealment) and do your best to work down one at a time with as much distance between you and them as possible.

>Civilian engagements = up close, military = further distances?

Generally yes - Civilian defense shooting is just that, defense. You're not in a warzone, you're not cleared to just blast some kid from 300 yards out because they /could/ be threatening. Civilian shooting is mainly defensive/reactive.

With the military, you get your ROE and that usually tells you the kind of A/O you're going to be in: mixed\hostile\friendly-alert, etc. If hostile, you're usually given reign to engage if fired upon or when told weapons free during ops.

How long did it take you to practice out of flinch and bad trigger pulls?

I literally miss a 6 inch gong from 10-15 yards (estimate) and I'm 90 percent sure I'm flinching and pulling/pushing.

Repeat to yourself, out loud,"front sight front sight front sight" until the shot fires.
>>
try to shoot more rapidly. when I first started shooting sports, I flinched a bit but then I started shooting trap/skeet and you're too busy rapidly aiming and firing to care about recoil.
>>
>>32694422
This, and also try the following breathing technique:
breathe in while pulling the trigger until it breaks, and at the moment of trigger break breathe out. This will help you concentrate on your breathing and the front sights instead of anticipating the blast

How would one hypthetically modify an Ar15 to be full auto in the event of say, a tyrannical government or foreign invasion?

Is it really as simple and changing the bolt carrier group?
