Why not use a rifle?
>>
>>32695325
you got a .73 caliber rifle?
>>
so that after you shoot that duck out of the air you can also kill the bear that wants to eat it
>>
>>32695325
Why use/carry another rifle when the shotgun does the job?
>>
>>32695325
In some places owning a rifle is rather difficult such as Russia or Japan, shotguns are far easier to own. Ive always been of the opinion that if you live somewhere that only allows you to own one gun,you may as well make it a 12 ga shotgun and slugs are one of the main reasons for that. With birdshot and chokes you can take a large range of small game and with buckshot or slugs you can take just about anything you can hit. Plus shotgun shells are pretty cheap, at least here in the U.S.
>>
>>32695325
Many states require the use if shotguns for hunting deer. In theory, this is safer bc slugs drop so quickly where as rifle rounds may travel some distance and get an unintended target. Lucky for me, I live in a rifle state.
>>
>>32695325
Shotguns are cheaper.
>>
>>32695362
No. And as someone in a free state, this has been the only somewhat relevant argument.
>>
Because shotguns are cheaper and more versatile.
>>
>>32695325
Shittylaws in my county it is illegal to hunt with a centerfire rifle

Another consideration besides the law restrictions and versatility as an option, as mention above, could be versatility out of necessity. Shotguns are cheap compared to many guns, and somebody without a lot of money can defend their home, hunt deer, AND hunt birds all with one gun for less than $200, where decent .308 rifles start around twice that and CANT be used for birds (and I suppose could questionably be used for home defense)
>>
>>32695325

Hunting laws, that is it.

In places shotguns are the only allowed firearm for hunting other than muzzle loaders. Slugs are the best way to do it.

What is the effective range of a 12ga slug? Target is a human being
>>
>>32696375

if bad company 2 taught me anything its that slugs have infinite range and perfect accuracy.
>>
>>32696375
Depends on the slug, the shotgun, and the shooter.
Most people say 75 yards but >>32696398 is actually correct, you can aim stupid high to lob them like artillery as even just pulled by gravity they will RUIN your entire day.
>>
>>32696028
Really? What state? And why are they mad?
>>
>>32696429
>Dropping random animals with shotgun artillery lobs

Found a new thing to do.
>>
>>32696429
This. Had a guy at a club I was in years ago who got off shooting coffee cans with slugs at 200yds, something like 30 inches of drop. Looked like he was trying to use it to shoot down and aircraft, but he hit ehm probably 3 out of 4. Same guy also liked to play with blackpowder .45-70, another artillery shot.

Indiana
>muh neighbor gonna shoot me outa mah tree stand
>>
you could literally just flip the question and ask that to people with rifles. but to answer your question, 12 gauge makes a bigger hole than .223, easily. with semi auto shotguns like the saiga, the only real advantage of an AR is recoil (quicker follow up shots)
>>
>>32698653
probably about 100 yards
>>
>>32698653
Rifled slugs ~75 yards for humane shots. Sabots can easily kill out to 150 yards with a drop of <5 inches
>>
12 gauge slugs kill grizzlies deader than .30-30 and don't cost as much as .375 H&H. Another bonus is that for survival use, you can take anything from bird to bear with one weapon if you have birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. A lot of survivalist/bushcrafter types like it for that reason.

Fun shit. The leveroutions for 45-70 make the rangebow less extreme but 350 is pushing my current skill set with artillery

>>
>>32695636
Same. It was shotgun only in much of the southern part of WI for a long time. However we can use rifles now and lots of older guys are very salty. But a study showed that 75% of durr hunting accidents occured with shotguns while only only about 33% of all hunters used shotguns. Also slugs have a tendency to ricochet more easily than a rifle bullet.

If you have ever seen what a 12 gauge slug does to a mammal you would not ask.
