is possible for a programmer to make great art by programming a computer to do it?
>>2627575
Some already exist and can make better art than most of /ic/.

NO fuck
Eventually I want to train an AI to render like me. So I can focus more fully on the creative part.
“In painting or sculpture, the conventions of 'style' play a less prominent part, and it might thus be thought that the break in tradition affected these arts less; but this was not the case. The life of an artist had never been without its troubles and anxieties, but there was one thing to be said for the 'good old days'—no artist need ask himself why he had come into the world at all. In some ways his work had been as well defined as that of any other calling. There were always altar-paintings to be done, portraits to be painted; people wanted to buy pictures for their best parlours, or commissioned frescoes for their country houses. In all these jobs he could work on more or less pre-established lines. He delivered the goods which the patron expected. True, he could produce indifferent work, or do it so superlatively well that the job in hand was no more than the starting point for a transcendent masterpiece. But his position in life was more or less secure. It was just this feeling of security that artists lost in the nineteenth century. The break in tradition had thrown open to them an unlimited field of choice. It was for them to decide whether they wanted to paint landscapes or dramatic scenes from the past, whether they chose subjects from Milton or the classics, whether they adopted the restrained manner of David's classic revival or the fantastic manner of the Romantic masters.

CONT'D
But the greater the range of choice had become, the less likely was it that the artist's taste would coincide with that of his public. Those who buy pictures usually have a certain idea in mind. They want to get something very similar to what they have seen elsewhere. In the past, this demand was easily met by the artists because, even though their work differed greatly in artistic merit, the works of a period resembled each other in many respects. Now that this unity of tradition had disappeared, the artist's relations with his patron were only too often strained. The patron's taste was fixed in one way: the artist did not feel it in him to satisfy that demand. If he was forced to do so for want of money, he felt he was making 'concessions ', and lost his own self-respect and the esteem of others. If he decided to follow only his inner voice, and to reject any commission that was not reconcilable with his idea of art, he was literally in danger of starvation. Thus a deep cleavage developed in the nineteenth century between those artists whose temperament or convictions allowed them to follow conventions and to satisfy the public's demand, and the others who gloried in their self-chosen isolation. What made matters worse was that the Industrial Revolution and the decline of craftsmanship, the rise of a new middle class which often lacked tradition, and the production of cheap and shoddy goods which masqueraded as 'art', had brought about a deterioration of public taste.”
-E. H. Gombrich, “The nineteenth century”, The Story of Art
ok, I assume you want to discuss on this subject. But it's a broad subject and you need to chose a more narrow starting point. Like, put a question.
too long, did not read
So my friend in an art course is going for animation, but her life gesture sketches come out like this.
I want to help her but I don't even know where to start. The pre-requisite for this class is anatomy and she doesn't seem to understand that method where you start with boxes and shapes.
Pic related is an example of a picture from the class today about drawing light and shadow.
Op here. Now I'm no super talented artist either but I got this level of skill.
I want to help her because she's younger than me and I want to give her more help than saying "Your drawing sucks."
>>2626284
If you can't explain to her why her drawing is bad then you have no business trying to teach her.
>>2626284
rotate and resize when you post images onegai
Recently picked up a Cintiq.
Before now, I've been sketching on paper and then scanning and inking afterwards. Would it be better to just try and make the leap of drawing straight to the tablet from the beginning? Seems like it would save a lot of time in the long run but would take a while to get used to.
>he fell for the Cintiq meme
With that said, yes of course you draw on the screen. If you weren't planning on doing that you shouldn't have gotten it to begin with (also, you shouldn't have gotten it to begin with).
The only Cintiqs that are even remotely worth it are the massive ones, simply because they're bigger than any monitor a regular tablet could function properly on.

he memed the falling for the meme meme

Draw on whatever you want. Digital doesn't replace traditional just because you bought an expensive tablet. I have an Intuos 3 and an iPad Pro and still do most of my sketching and studies on paper, digital is convenient but it's still a compromise when it comes to tactile sensitivity and control.
I have very clean hands, so getting gunk and grease on my tablet is never an issue. Why does everyone recommend them?
>>2627502
reduce friction
I sometimes get sweaty palms and it makes it hard to work on tablets so i cut up a gloves and it works great to reduce friction.
I just got one of these. I like it. It works for my tablet and traditional drawings, so i'm happy.
How can I improve my imagination? Is that even possible?
like everything, practice and research.
>>2622613
>He doesn't know you need to have the spark
Not. Gonna. Make it.
>>2622623
There's no spark it's just about pushing yourself to do it.
>>2622613
I'm assuming you wanna do more imaginative work so I'll tell you the easiest way- write down an idea, give it a few sentences to describe it at least, and then use google/tumblr/pinterest to find reference for it, then start ideating and using that reference. If you're doing an enviro start with thumbs, if you're doing a character do silhouette designs, if you're posing then do the gesture. There's really no one way to do it either, these are just ways to do it and the ways I've found easiest. From there you'll start to build your visual library (also studies can help build it as well). It's probably not gonna look perfect and that's fine, you just need to keep at it. Then on the side you wanna learn stuff obviously, utilize your resources and practice whats in there.
Someone spent 27 hours on this. What do you think, /ic/? How long should this have taken? Is it any good?
how about instead of criticizing other people's content to feel good about ourselves on 4chan, we focus more on giving constructive advice and improving our own art?
Oh wait, if we cared about improving our own art we wouldn't be here at all, whoops :^)

What is your opinion on personality/trait accentuating art?

Are you really that stupid that you don't know the word for this?

>stupid
>not knowing a rarely used word
sorry

Caricature. The word is caricature.
So I watched a h3h3 video recently where Ethan sold a hat for 10million moolah and decided that's when I'd become an artist and sell my shitware.
I'm selling as "Non-GMO Twig (Framed) Used by Artist RARE" on eBay. Am I MoMA enough yet?
>>2627056
the hat video was staged.
/thread
>>2627056
Unfortunately it appears to be glorifying violence since that twig has the vague apperance of a bolt action rifle which is highly problematic
>>2627098
I retracted my starting bid of 5 million for this reason. I don't want guns in my house. fucking savage.
Hey guys, i'm a beginning aspiring Graffiti artist and need some second opinions on some sketches i've been making. What do you think would look the prettiest on a wall or public area. Let me know. 1/11

put your name back on niggastrat
It's nice. The colors are epic. I gotta say man, I like it, I like it a lot.
>>2626143
Why'd you put Hogarth facial features and musculature on an infant?
Do other markers function on this? specially the shin han touch markers, i' would like to order one of this airbrush but i don't know if i would have to buy a new entire collection of colors
>>2625932
No unless they are the exact same shape as a copic marker they will not work
there's a bullshitty type of marker airbrush called craftwell ebrush that's supposed to be compatible with most markers as long as you get the right adapter(s). default ebrush comes with spectrum noir adapter
>>2625932
God, I'm leaking money just looking at that photo.
how do you guys like my newest project? I'm lost on what to add, any ideas?

Is that one of those Styrofoam mannequin heads?
Honestly, unless you're planning on making a bunch and then littering the forest with them in hopes someone will make an shitty horror film, it's aesthetic isn't really appealing.
There's too much going on. A lot of times people think 'not creepy enough? Add more blood!' but that really just makes it insist on itself, like an 80s slasher flick. If you're gonna fuck with styrofoam, have a little more creativity OP.
add a dildo and sliced condoms which hanging down like christmas tree decoration
I want to achieve this kind of linework, how does Kim Jung Gi do that?
Especially with the thin grey lines for the hatching and face details, what kind of pen does he use that allows for such a fine line?
It's hard for me to figure out what's going on because of the extremely low resolution of the scans of the 2013 sketchbook that this comic originate from
Anyone can help me figure it out? Or provide better more high quality scans of this comic?
