one of my favorite artists, formally at least
>>
I died young so as far as I know he didn't get past angsty gouache work. His nudes are often a favourite for art fans and they quite subversive, genuinely have an erotic and perverse streak. But he didn't live to get past it.

He makes more sense as an artist when put alongside Oscar Kokoschka (who was a better artist) as it explains the style. A cutting edge art for the newly rich and broad minded in Austria before the collapse.

Anyone know where to find art mentors? I'm too broke to afford a payed instructor and was looking for a casual place to find (somewhat) experienced artists that would give assignments and feedback on studies and artwork. Or even just a group to do regular artwork/studies/assignments together. Sorry if this was a dumb question.

You go talk to people. You can't pay someone to give a shit about you. You have to build rapport with them first and make them care about you on a human level and have a connection with them before they become your mentor.

You have to talk to people and show them who you are.
>>
Okay, true, but where do I find these people to talk to, I was wondering what/where are the art websites or places that have these people.

How do some of you determine your subject matter? To some, I feel that it comes pretty easy to them as they have a lot on their minds. But for me, all I can ever think of is "Knight fighting Dragon" or "Space marine in a dark space ship"
When I look at my favorite artists, such as Karl Kopinski or Jaime Jones, they usually have images like pic related. I don't think they sit down and say, "I'm going to draw some barbarians on horses looking over a hill at sunset." I feel like there's some sort of process that goes behind imagemaking (especially fantasy artworks) or some brief that a company provides.

Do some of you have a process on how you decide what type of work to do? It seems that all I can really do are "studies" of human figures in space. And while I have made illustrations, I don't feel super attached to them content wise.

I'm not sure if any of this makes sense, but hopefully some of you can shine some light.

It's deceptively simple, actually. Just sit down and do 30 thumbnails in very limited values of any random idea that pops into your mind. You're guaranteed to hit on something that intrigues you; do a bunch more of that subject from different perspectives, different light, etc.

Planning is the difference between an amateur and a pro. Well, that and not sucking.
>>
Jaime Jones has a process video for that pick you attached somewhere...I saw it awhile ago, can't remember where. He just started throwing random shapes onto the canvas and working them into the image.
>>
That subject sucks. Most subjects are shit, and you're here trying to figure out how people come up with shit subjects as if it's an accomplishment.

I realized today that I don't really know as much as I should about human anatomy.

I need to start practicing more. Usually I just kindof wing it and draw what "feels" right.

Today I took some pictures of my own legs since I don't have any reference material, and I drew those.

Can anyone recommend any resources for anatomical reference? I'm hoping to find reference images that are more dynamic than just anatomy and front-facing poses. It's the dynamic poses that get me.

Will bump with some of today's sketches. I apologize if this is a topic that is frequently discussed. I've only ever been here a few times before. I don't usually share my work with people since I just do it at home for fun.

You're making your rectus femoris too small. Started legs myself somewhat recently, pic related- Studying Bridgman. Pinterest usually has pretty large references for anatomy, search like "quadriceps" or something.

Do we have any concept artists/art directors here?

How did you achieve it? Was it because you had skill, because you fought for it, or because you just knew the right person?

I'm a concept artist in mobile games and it was mostly because I knew the right person and I had an art style that fit in. Going to THU helped me to find my actual work and having an artstation account gave me my first concept art job.

I am a soon to be art director (May/June next year if all goes well)

I started at an inhouse job 4 months ago.
Originally as an apprentice...

(Because I was that despereate since most other studios just turned me down, not because of my skills but my lack of experience in the field... Thats germany for you in a nutshell. The no-degree thing doesnt work here usually)

Although I already got offered to quit the apprenticeship by now and to be prepared to work as art director by next year.

I guess it really comes down to just being able to set your foot in the door and to find the right connections.
However, I always knew that once I was able to show my skills live and that I could handle client work right of the bat, I would be taken serious after all.

Entirely self taught in case you are wondering.
2 years of 8 to 10 hour days in mainly Graphic Design/3D/Infographics and Layout. for now I still do illustrations just as a hobby but I might consider accepting work like this soon too.

Hello anons! Right now, I need your digital art know how, to figure the ins and outs of great brushes for paint things with.

I'm looking for brushes that can paint; metal, skin, fur, cancer tumors, and everything else under the sun!

I would also love tips for rendering. BIG REF, in the kind of things I want to see: watch any >>>league of legends art spotlight<<<. I want to see sketch brushes and so forth too.

NOW ARTIST

SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT

Message to those who are obviously hot-shots and think their art is bad... Rito has jobs.

For SAI all you need are the default brushes, they give you enough customisation sliders for whatever you need.
>>
Speaking of brushes, anyone happen to have "Frenden's" brushes for clip studio? I believe it is known ad manga studio elsewhere
>>
>>2620080
You're part of the problem with so many artists in this day and age. The _brushes_ aren't fucking important. Only amateurs who have no idea what they are doing think _brushes_ actually matter. They don't. The standard _round_ _brush_ is all you need. Asking about _brushes_ implies that having them is going to get you anywhere. It's not.

Fucking kill your self already.

FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

http://pixeljoint.com/2009/10/03/2938/Pixel_Artist_-_Syosa.htm

>LOL: In Japan, are there communities that are comparable to PixelJoint, and what are the big differences?

>SYO: There are 2 major differences between Japanese pixelart and Pixeljoint’s. First, downsizing (sample above), editing and refining other people’s work is very popular. Skillful people like refining beginners pixel art for them to study and beginners develop their style by altering others’ skillful work. Of course, you first get permission from the artist before we alter his/her work.

>Secondly, it is very rare that Japanese people comment negatively, they usually just praise others. You may feel this custom is strange, but in spite of criticizing others we refine others' work.

Discuss /ic , why are we not more like the japanese art community when it comes to feedback and actually helping each other ?

Most of the time when you give feedback or edits to an American they will discard it, make excuses, get angry, cry, etc. Special snowflake syndrome. Just look at Illustrat. Would you bother giving him edits?

I'm new to drawing and one thing I have begun to notice is that my hands start to tremble after 20-30 minutes of practice. Normally I will just take a short break, do some practice exercises like drawing straight lines, and I will regain better control. That said, do you guys have any advice on how to avoid this problem in the first place? Also, what is the cause of my problem, tensing up my fingers/hand too much when holding a pencil?

now i desperately need some really awesome paintings with that subject. i've tried to find something but it all looks so cheap and clichée. does anyone know about artists that have something like that that i can actually look at every day without going insane?
