Hi /ic/
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the name for the painting technique where the majority of the image is built up of layers of small vertical strokes, rather than strokes that twist and curve, following the surface of the imaginary forms being depicted. It's sort of similar to pointillism, and I mostly see it in older artworks, I don't think many people use this technique anymore. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Pic Unrelated, I cant think of any pieces offhand that utilize the technique I'm talking about, sorry.
Kinda like this, OP?
>>2632301
Very very close! The only difference is that the entirety of the piece would be composed of strokes going vertically, rather than in multiple directions. This piece has strokes going horizontally, vertically, diagonally, etc. Beautiful painting though.

Never heard of that, pointillism is the closest I can think off, look into neo-Impressionism and post-Impressionism
>In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior, Amy Chua gives the Chinese recipe for success. Ms. Chua is a professor at Yale Law School, so apparently the strategy worked with her; and the article contains a picture of her daughter playing piano at Carnegie Hall, so she seems to have implemented it effectively.
>Non-Asian Americans are not going to like the article. They may even view the kids as virtual prisoners in a labor camp--though they should be aware that the corresponding Chinese view is that Americans don't love their children enough to put in the kind of effort necessary for them to succeed in life.
>Ms. Chua writes that "studies indicate that compared to Western parents, Chinese parents spend approximately 10 times as long every day drilling academic activities with their children. By contrast, Western kids are more likely to participate in sports teams." And she provides the following list of things her daughters are never allowed to do:
>attend a sleepover
>have a playdate
>be in a school play
>complain about not being in a school play
>watch TV or play computer games
>choose their own extracurricular activities
>get any grade less than an A
>not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama
>play any instrument other than the piano or violin
>not play the piano or violin.
>Many Americans may not want to put in the time and effort, or develop the kinds of relationships with their children, that Ms. Chua recommends. Let us at least hope that those who are envious of Chinese kids' high IQs and academic achievement will give up the fantasy of special Asian genes for intelligence.
is she wrong?

kids need to play, it is essential in their development.
>>2630028
This method of parenting may produce successful and disciplined children, but it also explains the high rate of suicide in asian countries.

Well I suck, and I'm lazy, guess it all lines up.
Can we all agree this kinda art which may sell for thousands is fucking dumb. all they did was throw paint at paper or some shit. No "there's deeper meaning" shit

keep being jelly when you didnt afford art school. I bet youre mad because my art will sell for six figures after I finish all the courses of modern art
>>2632890

>it looks so easy mimii it must be dumb
you should try to paint like that then you will see that the dumb one are you
I bet 2000 bucks that you will not produce a painting like that in years
Where can I download Art Books of movies and cartoons, like pic related?
It should be easy to find, but the links I find are either pay-sites, amazon links or book reviews, despite putting "download" in the search bar.

Meh, he can draw a better than me when I was 19, but as someone who want's to join the world of people who can create worlds and draw anything they will from mind I don't care much about a kid who has good eyes for painting/sketching photos but shown to be shit-tier at making anything really creative.
Is this a decent tablet for starting out?

I don't have personal experience, but unless you have a shitload of money to waste on wacom, I'd say yes. It's a tablet with the best price/performance ratio and gets lots of praise on /ic/.
>>2630230
Yes. As the other anon said, if you don't have the budget for a Wacom Intous Pro, then this is the second-best thing, apparently.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.
RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:
#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)
#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller
#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.
TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

How do I tell my existing clients that I want to greatly increase my prices? I realized I only make $8/hour.

>'How to ask for a raise, Freelance edition '
When they approach you for a job, you say 'my prices have increased to x/h' and if they say okay, then proceed. If you're good and they like your stuff, they'll pay for it OP.

I don't know where to start. Like, do you just put your work on sites like deviant art, tumblr, twitter, patreon, and ... and then what? What system do you use to pay? What if you want to stay anonymous, because it's yaoi/hentai? Where do you go to get money for drawing porn? I don't care what I'm commissioned to draw, as long as it's legal and my name won't be associated with it (even if it's not porn I want to stay anonymous, maybe a fake name) but paypal uses your name.
And THEN, how do you send them the work? As an image file? What if you drew the image physically, how do you send it? You'd have your address on the return label. Do you give them the original copy or a print? How do you do prints?!
I'm so bad at business/marketing, let alone have a severe lack of discipline and don't know the process of making and selling art, or finding the people willing to pay. Please, help?
>draw mainstram garbage that everyone wants to see to get popular, supply and demand exists in the art world too.
>put it on as many sites as possible and make sure people don't spread it without credit.
>USE TAGS PROPERLY
>seriously don't just put stuff in tags that it doesn't belong in, it pisses people off
>if you draw amy rose tag it with "amy rose", "sonic", "sonic the hedgehog" and if applicable what version (eg sonic boom)
>make a paypal under an email that doesn't include your real name and you don't use for anything else.
>.png or just ask what they want. scan it if it's traditional.
>a lot of artists just use skype or email to talk to clients and send their art/progress. i suggest you do the same.
>if you're doing prints, use redbubble or something.
literally look it up. most of the time everything is handled automatically. deviantart does prints. several websites make various items.

If you care so much about staying anonymous then don't even bother. If your name getting out would wreck you then the best way to stay safe is don't do it at all. You should also know that no one really gives a shit. Even when you get thousands of people jerking off to your art none of them really give a shit about your name or anything. Just don't personally link stuff you don't want linked.
As for EXPOSURE advise, I have about 5000 followers on tumblr, which is not a lot, but here's my 2 cents about my experience with that. Getting the ball rolling is the most important step. Once you got some followers they will do the spreading and promotion of your work for you, and as long as the quality is ok it really takes care of itself. At that point tagging becomes not very relevant because you already got an audience that will put it in front of people with similar interests.
If the quality of your work can stand with the people who are already IN the business then they can often be of help. I would say don't try to talk to them much or suck up to them, but if you do fanart of some of their stuff and you let them know and your work is sort of good they will often reblog and even subscribe. It is a "you scratch my back I scratch yours environment" and people have an invested interest in being cordial with each other.
Only can afford 1 so if you had to pick one which one is the best you reckon?.
