Hey /diy/, got a little pet project for you guys.

I work for a rather large municipality and a big part of my job is to take out the trash.
Sounds simple, right?
Put in a trash bag, next day, pull it and replace the bag.

Well, our cans come equipped with bolted on lids that only open partially.
This is to keep the seagulls out.
They eat the garbage and shit in the water, lowering the water quality and littering the beach.
Bags don't stay in, they sink right to the bottom.

The result is: double the manpower (2 people need to lift and flip a heavy can and dump into a bag) , double the money spent on bags (tax $$$) and back injuries/hernias.
I dump hundreds of these things a day on top of the stuff I already have to do.
My municipality wont replace the cans, we're talking 3000 plus cans that are compliant and they're paid to have because of the advertisements on them.

If I could find a way to secure the bags in the cans where they wont fall to the bottom and I can simply rip the bag out, we could save tons of money, manpower and injuries just on this one simple fix.
So what do you guys suggest?
(btw, if we rip them off, they're replaced and we get gouged for like $90 a lid)

>TL;DR How can I keep the trashbags from falling down in these trashcans?
No idea, post some detailed photos of the cans, flange and innards so we can actually see what the fuck you're talking about.

Also, why aren't you addressing this obvious design flaw with the manufacturer?

I am trying to design a circuit that will allow an appliance to stay connected to wall power in the US only as long as a LASER shines onto a photosensitive element on the circuit, using a solid-state relay.
The control circuit itself is wall-powered through a voltage regulator.

The plan is to eventually get the control circuit printed onto a PCB and the whole thing (with the relay and regulator) in a project box with the LASER diode, switches, photosensitive-resistor, and connections to wall cable and appliance attached.
I dunno much about circuit design so I came to /diy for feedback about effectiveness and safety of my design.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks, /diy/

7812 isn't going to take 120vac, well, not for long anyway!
the relay kind of shorts out the src, did you mean that?
d1 is doing nothing for an optical relay?

check this for simplicity, swap ldr with pot for inverse action
>>
>>1166779
Sorry if I may not have gotten all of that, I'm not too familiar with this, so I'll try by best to understand...

I'll trade 7812 for a different regulator in that case.

Not totally certain what you're referring to be 'src' being shorted by the relay (sorry, I don't know circuits that well). I was just thinking the relay would operate the triac based on whether there was a voltage drop between the relay's anode and cathode inputs.

I'll remove d1... Not sure why I included it now...

As far as swapping the ldr for a pot, I'm assuming you mean a potentiometer? Wouldn't my circuit need a light-dependent resistor to do what it's supposed to?

In any case, thanks for the help!

There are some of us on /out/ and /r9k/ that would like to build a men only compound.
The basic idea would be tiny houses spread out in the woods with a main buildings housing shower/bath facilities as well as kitchen and workspaces like woodshops , metal working shops , auto mechanic areas and whatnot.
There is money set aside for the project but the benefactor will not start releasing funds until a critical mass of problem solvers start taking the initiative to start fleshing the ideas out further.
Areas discussed so far for buying the land are
Florida
Maine
Southern Colorado / Northern NM
Idaho and Kentucky.
We have a few home builders and a plumber and electrician.
We need an architect pretty bad as well as guys who can set up internet infrastructure.
Anyone interested?

why? the prints for the kind of expeditionary structures you want are all archived by the military. they literally have been doing what you are talking about since the 40's. sewage, buildings, roads, the works. its all prepackaged.

Need to convert a single pole switch to a 3-way. Any resource on this? Idiots who built my house put a switch at the top of the basement stairs but not the bottom.

>>
not an electrician but i'd say it would depend on how it's wired up already, also google https://www.familyhandyman.com/electrical/wiring-switches/how-to-wire-a-threeway-switch/view-all
>>
>>1167455
unless you want to pull some new wire (not existing), then you could totally do it
>>
>>1167455
if you cant run a new wire with three conductors, you can buy a remote three way. One part goes where the existing switch is, and the other part, which is radio controlled and has a battery, goes at the bottom of the stairs. Changing the battery sucks but if it is too difficult/impossible to run a wire it will do the trick.

thninling about buying a camper like the one pictured. called an "Aliner". it needs a new floor - aparently the water tank leaked and rotted out the floor (see next pic). I'm good at fixing thing, have ton of tools etc. wondering how hard to replace a floor in one of these campers. I wouldn't use the chipboard that they used when new. probably some 3/4" marine ply? then do a nice wood look laminated flooring over that. guessing I'll have to take out the cabinets and everything too. I'll take out and leave out the water tank - don't need that.

Sounds like you know more about it than we do.
What are you waiting on op get to it and post results.
>>
>>1168815
OP here, I don't own it - I just saw it listed for sale a few towns away. normally these type campers are expensive but this one because of the water damaged floor is pretty cheap. just looking for anyone who may have had experience with camper restoration specifically replacing an entire floor. still on the fence if this is going to be 'worth it' or just keep looking for a different camper that doesn't need as much work. if I do buy it I will post progress and results etc.

I can clean up in like two hours, if I ever have company again.

Will I get far with this or grow out of it too quickly? It's about 500$

If its a stick welder itll be good for any mild steel projects, Considering you get the right rod for the steel thickness etc.
>>
>>1165537
If you get a Mig welder. You need bottled gas or fluxcore wire which gets a little more complicated but its worth learning anything man
>>
>>1165571
If you're doing stick, you can do much much cheaper and still good. Don't get a crappy MIGable and then stick weld with it. Get a semi-descent stick-only inverter welder for $150.

Hey, im making an engagement ring to my fiancée.
I used bog oak, Im almost done, I abraded the wood with very fine-grain sandpaper as finishing touch, but when I wiped it with a slightly wet cloth to get rid of the dust, thin fiber started to come up.
Is there some wood treatment material I can use to prevent it? is wax good for that?
I'm worried that, when shes going to wear it for longer time, slowly it will become ugly. The ring, not my fiancée.

the picture is only illustration because i fucking have to

for something that is getting rubbed 24/7 i would coat with epoxy
>>
>>1165529

Knife makers tend to stabilize wood for best longevity. You vacuum impregnate it with thermoset resin and then throw it in the oven.

Because it's non porous it will clean up better and if you have to sand it eventually you only need to take off a minute amount.

Hey guys, I have an older compressor that I don't use that much except for filling tires and blowing out my pc. Last time I used it, it filled itself up, but when I went to use it, it just spurted out some air then was done. It didn't turn back on, but I had to wait about 30s before I could blow any real amount of air, then it did the same thing. Quick burst of air, then just barely anything. I went to drain the air tank, and it was completely full of air just like usual. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?

>>
Ok I'm no genouis (sp?) but I think if ur tank is "completely full of air" but nothing comes out the end, then logic dictates that there is something between ur "completely full" tank and the end of your line.
dumbass

Fine, I'll just answer your question. Your regulator's full of crap and that's why nothing's coming out.

What garden partition has the best blend of:
>privacy
>low maintenance
>durability

At the moment I have a beech hedge (pic related), which is nice in summer and only has to be trimmed once a year, but is virtually see-through during winter.

Anything goes: other types of hedges, wooden walls, etc.
Just nothing that I have to trim two-three times a year or falls apart after a few years.

Try something in the yew genus, I think Japanese Yews are most common but there a lot of types. Evergreen, so no concerns about winter, pretty resilient and easy to trim.

im installing an amp in my car and im trying to hook up a direct line in to my phone to bypass the radio (though a dual channel pot for volume control). i would expect the phone's 3.5mm jack to be in stereo tip ring sleeve, however when i hook it up as such (left side of the pic) i get like a conflicting signal and it cuts out all of the top end and is very quiet. but when i hook it up like on the right side of the pic, i get full range and full volume. also i dont need to hook up each channel to both the + and -, i can do just one or the other and it sounds exactly the same. also another weird thing is that if i just hook up one channel or the ground, it will quietly play like its picking up the signal as rf over the air and i can touch any of the other wires and it will play the signal at almost full volume through my body, even if im not touching the phone or car body.

so im not exactly sure why the 3.5mm isnt outputting the way i think i should and why i need to wire it the way that i do to make it work. do phones have a different kind of 3.5mm pinout?
also im not sure how the signal is able to jump wirelessly simply through a male to male jack and through me.

I'm making a dozen of IOT devices that sends me real time temperature and humidity variables through the internet, and will send me an instant alert if there is any sudden change. These will be battery powered and as portable as possible as I will keep these all over my city. If anyone wants to know I'm using ESP8266 with DHT11 and Dweet.io as the API. With around 10-20mAh as it's power consumption, I can easily power it for a month or two with some AA batteries.
The challenge here is providing the ESP with an internet access. I wish to make these devices self sufficient and have it's own internet. With some research I came across this 4g WiFi dongle of a perfect portable size but as there was no proper data sheet published by it's maker, I decided to buy it and test it myself. It works like a charm but sucks around 200mA on an average which is a deal breaker.
I would appreciate if anyone here can advise me a very low power and low data internet device or DIY arrangement that can fulfill the needs for the above project.

tl;dr anyone knows a lowpower internet device plz?

Sending a constant stream of real time data on a battery powered device is your problem.

Why not just have it send the data at fixed intervals, and power down the modem when not in use.
