How do i get a get a super smooth finish with my wall painting? in painting onto already painted walls which are brick and plaster. Painted one room and it has that sort of orange peel look (thibnk thats the term) like you can see in this picture. I think most people think its desirable and every house see4ms to have it but i want ultra smooth almost like the look of an unpainted door (next pic)

door, you know the super smooth machine finish these sort of doors have before painting?
>>
>>1166641
fine grit sanding inbetween coats is your best bet.
>>
>>1166654
this, the more layers of paint you paint over, the more it magnifies any hills and valleys in the paint. only way to knock that down is sand it. never sanded a wall before so I'm not sure if you can use a belt sander or if you gotta do it by hand. either way, wear a dust mask and put down dropcloths because that shit's gonna get everywhere.

doors are sanded smooth.

Has anyone ever tried to use a chainsaw (basically replacing the chain to drive instead of cutting) to drive a bicyle or go-cart? What's to look out for if one want to try it?

Alrighty so I've got funds, got some know-how, and I've got a choice;
Either the Airdrome 3/4th scale Fokker E-III or the Airdrome 3/4th scale Fokker D-VIII?
I'm torn 50/50 on both and I dunno which one I want to fly more
22 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>1165670
I vote the Eindecker. From the look of things, the D-VIII is a bit too heavy and much too fast to build compliant with Part 103 requirements (not that I think you'd get caught or anything), and a bit trickier to land too. And somehow, despite being slower, the Eindecker seems sportier in the handful of videos I can find of it.
>>
>>1165800
Amazingly enough, it seems Airdrome Airplanes managed to pack a D-VIII into a 253lb package, literally under by the hair on its back
Although it must be downgraded from a Rotax 503 to a 377, but apparently it still has some giddyup

I think I am kinda leaning on the eindecker, come to think of it.
I recall hearing from one source that the Airdrome eindecker uses actual ailerons instead of the wing warping that the historical plane did, which I actually prefer. But I am not certain, and I would rather the D 7 if this version of the eindecker really does use wing warping
>>
Huh, every video and most pictures I see of the 3/4th scale Eindecker shows the plane flying with the nose ever so slightly pointed upwards a few degrees, even in level flight

I've got some walker/crutch tips which I need to put on the ends of some PVC pipe, and the diameter of the tips is JUST barely wider than the diameter or the pipe, and it won't fit snugly

The crutch tips are rubber of some kind, with a metal washer at the base for strength

What kind of adhesive would be best to permanently fix the PVC to the crutch tips?

I would try a small tube of "right stuff" brand silicone. I was on crutches for 1mt years. And a fat. Went through like 4 sets of crutch tips and 3 cane. Tried everything. The problem is that u want it to hold but also it has to give and flex.

I found right stuff to be the best solution although not perfect. Saved me from eating shit several times i am sure.

You can make a wood spike and flare out the PVC so it fits snugly. Just heat the end of the pipe with a heat gun and shove the spike in it.

The spike simply needs to be larger than the ID of the pipe by the same amount that the crutch tips are larger than the OD of the pipe.

Hey, /diy/. I'm working with a Raspberry Pi project to turn an old FM radio modeled after a PC into a fully functioning computer. I have removed the speaker grill and sanded it, but now I'm looking to attach the original speaker to the Pi's audio output with adjustable volume. I'm using the Adafruit 2.5w amplifier (pictured with speaker) which works great, but now I need to figure out what resistance of variable resistor I need to adjust the volume properly.

The speaker is 8ohm 2.5w. Would I use a 5k ohm resistor for this? Or a 1k ohm? I'm new to electricity so I'm confused of what I would need to calculate. I cannot use the original potentiometer unfortunately because turning it about 1/4 inch of its range just kills the audio volume to 0. Any help would be appreciated.

You need an audio / log taper pot. Put it in front of the amp, wiper goes to the input of the amp, audio output and ground across the pot.

Okay noted. Would there be any you would recommend for such a low power situation?

I just got a 2001 Dodge Van that I intend on turning into a liveable space so that I can save money on rent. This is something that I've thought about doing for years and have plenty of ideas, but I was wondering if anyone here on diy has any ideas to share as well. The only thing that worries me about the conversion is setting up the solar panels and wiring all the electrical stuff.

I don't intend to go crazy with mods or even carpentry. I just want to get it liveable.

For starters, it's spelled "habits" lel

Use some material design framework and build around it, it makes it dead easy to build a nice app.

You could also make a permanent notification to allow for quick adding of amounts of water.
Also ask /g/, the only time i've built an android app it looked like absolute dogshit tbqh, you will find actual help if you ignore the usual shitposting.

If there's a method to bring it back to life I'd like to know, as I have a pair of massive 6 volt lead acid batteries and one of them is done for.

I'm trying to rewire an autoclave I was given. The thing has a chinese 3 prong plug (this exact plug http://en.shsumiya.com/products_detail3/productId=37.html) and it's original cable is rated at 16A250V. The appliance draws 2kW at 250V and about 9.09A. I'm trying to rewire it so I can use my canadian dryer receptacle which accepts a 4 prong nema 14-30 plug. I ended up buying this cable https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0014KO11O but the conversion from 3 prong to 4 prong is confusing me since I have absolutely no knowledge about electrical wiring. The 4 prong cable has an extra live red wire and I have no idea what to do with it. Can I just wrap it in insulation and ignore it? Do I have to connect it to the same lug (not sure if that's the right term) as the first black live wire? From what I understand, as long as my appliance draws less power than my source and the cable/wire is rated at or above the required specs I should be ok. It's just the wiring that's confusing me. I don't know what info is pertinent so I'll start with a schematic of the autoclave.

And here is a picture of the wire colouring for the nema 14-30 cable.

I tried to simply find an adapter but I had no luck after searching for over a week both online and around my city. If someone has a better solution or can help me out with the wiring it would be much appreciated.
>>
Red to brown, black to blue, green to green, white all wrapped up in electrical tape and safely deadended.

I think your confusion here is that you are assuming you need the neutral (white) wire, and according to the ultra-reliable and easily understood chinese wiring diagram you probably don't.

I've got an old angle sander. The manual says it takes 7 or 9 inch discs and it spins at 6,000 RPM. A friend has what looks to be the exact same tool except he says it's a grinder. It has a different shroud around the disk but is basically the same from there on back. Same manufacturer. I checked the arbors, the same. Motor ratings, the same. His data plate is fucked so I can't read what it spins at. My buddy says I shouldn't use grinding discs on my machine because it spins too fast. Most discs I see say they can handle 6k RPM. Some go over 20k. Is he full of shit? I think they basically made the same tool and just had different shrouds for the different roles.
19 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
Pic of the actual device would help.
An sander usually has an eccentric movement of the disc which doesn't necessarily need to spin if you apply pressure. Also an sander sands with the flat side of the disc with sand paper applied, where an grinder grinds with the edge.
Aside from that both devices may look similar, but usually don't.
