Is there any glue in the known universe that actually bonds to polyethylene? I'm trying to make a poorfag filter for my fish tank and nothing has worked. I'm trying to attach vinyl tubing to a soda bottle, both of which have been infuriating to work with.

How do you wash yourself effectively when you haven't showered for months?

Regular water with soap only does so much. How do you wash your backs properly? I can scrub really hard on most of my fronts and lower ends, but my back side neck to my hip is without any cleaning other than water and rubbing myself against shower walls.

What's the trick?

And in the spirit of DIY, I want to do it by myself, not ask others to clean my back for me.

As to how to clean your back, use a rag on a stick like fat Bart.

got a car, overdue for a service, been treating me like a bitch lately.

real intermittent issue:
>sometimes hard to start, have to hold down starter for a good 30seconds
>sometimes struggles to idle, drops revs
>sometimes the accelerator will flutter as I'm driving, act as if I were to take pedal off the gas and press it down again
>once in a blue moon the check engine light will come on and stay on for an entire trip, but then will be off on the trip home.

the worst part is, it's real intermittent, so it doesn't happen every time.

I've got a new fuel filter as per a mate's recommendation, and if that doesn't fix it I'll check the sparks next. also going to run injector cleaner through it soon.

but is there anything else that could be wrong / worth looking at?

me and a freind are starting blacksmithing and the first thing i wanna make is a hammer kind of brian brazel style .. could i get some help?
55 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
Don't start with a hammer. That's way above you since you are just starting out. Make some simpler stuff like wall hooks to practice your basic skill. After that the first tool you are going to want to try and make are a pair of tongs, with twist tongs being the easiest.
>>
>>1153252
Tons of youtube vids i have seen and it seems you never have too many tongs
>>
I'm not very skilled myself but I can still offer some knowledge. First, you should always start with a blueprint of the shape and dimensions, then make sure you have a good tool steel, I don't know if you would want to temper a hammer but if you do, keep it at a bright cherry red at least so the temper isn't too brittle but still allows it to hold up against a solid blow. Beginners may make the mistake of blowing too much air and making burning coals fly everywhere, so remember that a large volume of air moving at a slow speed trumps a little air blowing faster. Be sure that you are prepared to finish it at a steady and fast pace, if you heat steel to a high temperature and let it cool off too much then re-heat it again the metal will start to lose carbon after about seven or eight times. Try as best as you can to get both sides of the head flat and level so you don't get any uneven blows or hit metal off the anvil. I hope this helps, if you really want to get in to smithing I recommend a book by the name of "The Art of Blacksmithing" By Alex W. Bealer. It taught me a very large portion of what I know about welding and coal forging, as well as the history of blacksmithing.

Does anyone know how I could make a time capsule that could last hundreds, preferably thousands of years?

My wife died about 10 years back, and I've got hundreds of small notes, letters, keepsakes and items that remind me of her and I want to preserve them long beyond when I'm gone. I've got ammunition cases, but I feel they'll rust.
I think my best option is a waterproof capsule meant for holding documents on a boat, pic related.

I believe the thick plastic will be around for a long time to come, but is there any way I can keep the documents inside from decaying?

Has anyone here ever built a time capsule before?

Glass and Argon are usually the way to go. You seal the contents in a glass tube and fill it with argon and maybe a partial vacuum before burying it down, preferably in a strong container so it doesn't breaks when someone finds it in his patio 100 years later.
Plastic decays after some dozens of years.
Argon can be bought for welding but sealing a glass tube requires special equipment.
>>
>>1163768
A century or two is relatively simple - standard time capsule stuff. Thousands of years is a whole other level. Chemical stability of the things being stored is a big deal at that time scale. Unless the things were originally made to last forever, they probably have acids and other residual chemicals that will degrade them over time, even in an inert atmosphere. Archivists probably have the references you'll need here for neutralizing and preserving papers and other materials.

But just spitballing something that would last ages: Cast each item into acrylic resin. Put the castings into an argon-filled glass tube packed with enough silica gel to keep the castings from moving around. Seal the tube. This goes in a thick 316L stainless box filled with silicone resin. Deeply engrave some information about what's in the box, weld the box shut, and passivate it. Make arrangements to have the box stored in a cool dry place indefinitely, or until a particular date.
>>

This is a superb post, and exactly what I was looking for, thank you. Getting my hands on resin and argon shouldn't be too difficult, and I know a few welders. I'll have to see if a few glass blowers in my city might be able to help with a custom order. I have a place where I may also be able to cast the capsule in cement to keep it permanently.

Money isn't an object, so its nice to know where to start looking. Thanks /diy/

I'm thinking of buying a roof floor (156m2/1680sqf), on some building. Going to check the place out wendsday. Maybe you could give some tips what to look for, what should i be expecting.
Realise that i might have to put a lot of work in, since will want to toit myself. Will post some more pics on the replys

Can I use bamboo instead of straw for making cob/adobe brick? Do I need to cure it first or can I just slap it onto the dirt?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1165682
No, you need to use straw.
Yes, you can use it "raw" without curing it.

When stacked it needs to dry out at a certain rate, if you stack it too fast it will collapse before it is dry enough to hold more weight.

You should also put it on a foundation of stone or block to keep it off the ground. If it makes contact with the ground, it will draw moisture up from the ground and be structurally compromised.
>>
>>1165690
Can I use something else to subtitute straw? Like jute?
>>
>>1165730
Yes.

Planer shavings, saw dust, sticks or wood shavings/chips. Horse or cow poo. Any kind of natural fiber like cotton, jute, flax, ramie, sisal, hemp, coir (coconut) or dissolved paper. Mineral fibers would do it too. Longer fibers are as a general rule, desirable because they provide tensile strength to the mix.

I'm looking to lay wood-looking porcelin tile, but I've never worked with thinset before. How should I go about this?
9 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>1165521
OP I tiled roughly 1,000 sq ft of my own house and a few hundred square feet of some rental properties.

My only suggestions are:

1) don't mix a full bag your first time. Mix a half or quarter bag and start with that.
2) when mixing, use a strong enough drill to mix properly. Add water slowly so it doesn't get too watery. Oh and mix outside, there's a potential for throwing thinset every place.
3) if your tiling next to drywall and are going to be putting down some kind of baseboard trim, drag a 4ft piece around with you to make sure you don't have any gaps. A level could work just as well, assuming your underfloor is actually level.

I winged it my first time last year building a pad for a wood burning stove. Loads of problems largely due to using ungraded slate rock.

Practice on a sheet of cement board if you're concerned. It's not hard though. As post above mentioned, make sure to thoroughly mix it. You don't want any dry clumps.

I have 12 hours to unclog this drain - most likely hair&soap. How do I go about? This is pretty urgent

>>1165323
A wire coat hanger works in a pinch.
>>
I usually just use some long tweezers, like they have in the ER for doing stitches, works pretty well for normal daily maintenance.

If it's a big clog, the coat hanger works, otherwise use something to remove the drain insert (if there is one) and just drag all that shit out.

I felt around with a stick- doesn't feel like it's too deep - plus I havent been able to extract any gunk. I think the problem may lay at the top part of the drain (forgive me for lack of better knowledge when it comes to terminology)

In the pic are the pins I have for a screwdriver but I couldnt find an actual screwdriver.

Is there a way to improvise one?

I want something like pic related, but something that will allow me to stamp small drawings or symbols instead of writing. Also, it has to be able to draw on various surfaces (cement, wood, plastic etc), not just paper.
Ideas?

A potato?
You can carve a stamp out of anything, typically people use rubber.
The target surface probably has more to do with the ink, choose an ink that will work with the material you are stamping.
As an out of the box alternative if you have the ventilation consider stencil and spray paint for a trade off easier production for messier application
>>
>>1165184
Yeah I know. It's just that I'd want something that can work rather quickly. Like, one-movement quickly. So, having to apply ink on a stamp before using it or having to use spraypaint is pretty much out of the question.
>>
>>1165189
Some stamps need an ink pad, sometimes they have the ink pad inside and a mechanism that flips the engraving, the impression,I don't know the technical word you know, the plate upside down to rest against the ink pad until you stamp it.
If you can find one with that mechanism that seems like it will suit your purpose.
I'm sure you could make some rubber parts that will clip into the stamp like the letters do with a sharp knife and a steady hand.
Print it, glue it on, cut around, peel it off. Use pva glue or some shit. Or freehand it if your crazy!
Seems pretty straightforward, what's the issue?
