This is an Android app I am developing. It reminds you when you need to drink water. When you click "drink" two options appear. Custom and water bottle. When you click water bottle it adds 500ml tp your count. When you click "custom" you get to type in the amount of ml you drank. I know there is other water reminders on the play store so how can I get it to be different? Thanks!!

I need some lights for my garage,
found some 12v led strips that put out 450 lumen/meter (3000-3500K) 9,6W/m
and another that put out 900 lumen/meter (2500-2700K) 14,4W/m .

I'm forced to use a 12v car/caravan battery so I'm concerned about consumption.

The strip are sold in 5 meters bundles, so I'll probably run four 1,25m strips.
In the first case that'd be 12W/m making it a 1A consumption per strip, and 1,5A in the second.

So if I plug a 70Ah battery like pic related, do I get around ≈70 hours of use? is that right?
And how many cycles of charching would a battery like this last?

>>1168178
>do I get around ≈70 hours of use?

Sorry, with the whole 5m in use that'd be 5A so 14 hours of use.

Lead acid batteries are good for no more than half their rated capacity before physical decomposition begins to impact performance.

But my point of concern is the luminosity.

A 60watt tungsten incandescent bulb puts out 900 lumens. In the case of the latter strip, is 5 incandescant lights really enough light for your garage?

If you plan on doing any amount of work in the garage and are using this for task lighting then I can assure you that this solution will be less than ideal.

Please explain why you can't make use of mains power

>Please explain why you can't make use of mains power

Because there's none,
I live in a condo so connecting the lights to my house would mean running a 50m cable in the courtyard.

>is 5 incandescant lights really enough light for your garage?
It's 6x12 meters so I'd say yes

>Lead acid batteries are good for no more than half their rated capacity
Well then, seems like my plan is foiled

I'm looking to recreate something similar to the pic. I'd like to dampen some of the sound in my studio room, and I thought this was a great idea.

What's stopping me from getting 12"x12" sound absorbing panels and painting a buttermilk/moss mixture on them to grow my own moss? The pic related goes for $100+ for a 11"x11" square, which is insane.

Is it safe to essentially have moss hanging on my wall indoors? I was planning on arranging 12"x12" sound proof foam panels on 4'x4' boards with a nice framing around it. Ideally, I'd have 4 of these framed moss boards. This way, they're not right up against the wall (I'd assume the foam would get a little damp) and I can easily reposition them when needed.

TL;DR- what are the negative effects of hanging panels of moss on my walls indoors-- can I get sick from it? Will it fuck my walls up? Is it gross? Should I even bother?

That actually seems like a pretty neat idea. I once stayed in a hotel in japan that had american/european style showers that had moss growing on the floor outside the shower instead of a bath mat to dry your feet on, thought that was a neat idea.

Need advice on sowing grass seed

Rough guess its about 30 square metres. I've dug all the soil today and raked it over. Do I need to apply new soil on top or fertiliser? Also, what are the best ways to keep birds from eating it all? I'm on a budget btw.

Lawn maintenance general I guess

You should buy turf rolls, I its very hard to get a good looking lawn they way you plan, check the turf as soon as its delivered because of limited warranty. Hire a roller to level the turf after laying it all out.

My house was never filled with bugs and rotten food, but ive lived in really dirty trashy conditions before.
It just starts to pile up and before you know it you are living in shit.

I would just start slow and do a little bit of work each day, eventually it will all get fixed and cleaned to an acceptable level.
Its not like nuclear levels of cleanup will change your ways. But slowly working at it does
>>
A group of 4 or 5 guys at the least, perhaps from a 'crime scene cleanup' company or sewer disaster company, basically some strong guys who give no shits about bugs and rot and stench. Maybe just a few pros and a big handful of volunteers from the community, kids on probation, etc.

Roll-off dumpster, as close as possible to the house.

Escort filth-guy around for a half-hour to pull out important stuff, get some general guidelines (don't throw out box full of pictures, etc).

Get the guys to work, toss everything. old fridge, minifridge, fridge from the street, kitchen table, pots, pans, couch, chair, bed, clothes, pull up carpet. Pull out any fixtures that are obviously beyond repair (old cabinet that is crumbling or sink that is rotting out of the wall)

Bare floors, walls.

Come back through and give things a full decontamination bleach wash. Repair plumbing, check power, etc and then repaint after a tsp wash. Replace carpet last, put in solid floor surface if possible.

"new" furnishings, thrift store scores mostly. Set filth-anon up with some talk therapy sessions, maybe meds for what is probably a continuing anxiety problem.

Assuming small house it would not be a huge ordeal, just unpleasant. Several people with minimal shits being given and snow-shovels/wheelbarrows can turn a solid garbage room into an empty room much faster than "cleaning". Assuming you can get some volunteers the biggest cost would probably be the plumbing labor, specialized cleanup labor and replacement fixtures (fridge, bed, etc) as distant third.

Wired will always be better than wireless.
They still need power... might as well go PoE.

You'll want a longer focal length lens (more mm's) for objects farther away. A "varifocal lens" is adjustable zoomy.

Modern IP cams are 4-6mp, so there's generally plenty of resolution there.

I've been happy with my hikvision domes.

Just got a new furnace, but I know very little about HVAC and was wondering about the install. The following is a pic is of new furnace.

2 concerns I have. First, they had told me that the new furnace would not use the triangle splitter on the top as shown, instead would use a box splitter, which supposedly promotes better airflow.

Secondly, they used some sort of caulking compound all around the main duct, whereas the old one I have uses tape.

Good or bad install?

Hey /diy/, so I want to build an arcade cabinet to run some older arcade style games (Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Metal Slug, etc.). I was planning on using retropie on a Raspberry Pi B to run the games, an HDMI monitor, and then using the adafruit trinket pros to make joysticks. Frame would be made out of particle board or plywood. Does anybody have any experience with this sort of thing? If so, is there anything I am missing?

May as well use a pi 3, it'll handle the emulators better, and it had built-in wifi and Bluetooth. Also has analog video output from the 3.5 mm jack, use pic related with a CART instead of an HDMI monitor.

A company in my area (atlantic canada) is putting on a competition involving a high altitude balloon. The aim is to collect info from the balloon while it's in the stratosphere, and bonus points are awarded if it can be done in real time.

Initially it was proposed that we communicate over the cell network, but I read somewhere that it's only good up to like 20000 ft. Later I stumbled upon XBee, and found that it can communicate up to ridiculous heights if the right equipment is used.

Ive done some googling over the past three days, and although the company provides all the supplies, I don't want the cost of all this stuff to be through the roof, else my team's proposal could be denied. I initially wanted to use a raspberry pi, but the adapter for the XBee board is like $150.00. So I found all the needed parts for an arduino, but then that would prevent us from using a raspberry pi sensor board that we found.

In short, I'm really fucking confused right now. I'm wondering if anyone has done this sort of thing before, and what they used for a setup. Any links online would also be appreciated.

Pic unrelated

Fuck that xbee cheap crap. It's only good really for a couple hundred meters. Do your self a favor and have it communicate through on off keying on a cheap handheld radio. Those a re rebuilt for long range and will give you a decent data rate of few kilobaud
>>
And from my understanding the XBee can't be used alongside arduino sensors, otherwise I'd just so that.

Would I be able to connect an arduino to a raspberry pi so it can use that to communicate, and then have all the sensors attached to the rpi?
>>
>>1167213
Even if it had long range antennas? Or is that not possible?

I was thinking of doing something like that but wasn't sure if possible. Do you have anything off the top of your head that I should look up to do that? If not I'll look it up tomorrow

I am in the planning stages of building an automated aeropress coffee maker device, preferably combined with an automated milk frother, and i need some advice on what kinds of components to use or what to hack apart for what kinds of components.

>some kind of in-line water heater or small reservoir+heater that can heat up to 10oz of water to 200F before pumping it away. I could just use an electric kettle but I'm wondering if there's something more barebones i can do or something more integrated where the reservoir and heater and pump are all in one.

>some kind of water to keep milk refrigerated in a container while also being able to pump the cold milk out of it to feed into something else

>some way to easily generate frothed milk, possibly just use a frothing want on a swiveling arm but i'm wondering if there's a way to do it in-line while squirting it into the coffee cup

>a pre built simple twisting wrist gripper, i'll be using some festo fin grippers but i'd like to use an already existing gripper design that can grab, and twist 360 at the wrist, then put all that on a vertical sliding rail so it can pick up the aeropress, flip it and place it back down.

>some way to remove the filter cap of an aeropress as simply as possible, maybe just a grippy circular thing on a swing arm that plops onto the filter cap and twists to get it off.

if these questions seem vague, they are, i'm just fishing for ideas or existing things i can use instead of reinventing the wheel

i got inspired by this video by the way although my design will differ from theirs quite a bit
