Hey, im making an engagement ring to my fiancée.
I used bog oak, Im almost done, I abraded the wood with very fine-grain sandpaper as finishing touch, but when I wiped it with a slightly wet cloth to get rid of the dust, thin fiber started to come up.
Is there some wood treatment material I can use to prevent it? is wax good for that?
I'm worried that, when shes going to wear it for longer time, slowly it will become ugly. The ring, not my fiancée.

the picture is only illustration because i fucking have to
>>
>>1165529
for something that is getting rubbed 24/7 i would coat with epoxy
>>
>>1165529

Knife makers tend to stabilize wood for best longevity. You vacuum impregnate it with thermoset resin and then throw it in the oven.

Because it's non porous it will clean up better and if you have to sand it eventually you only need to take off a minute amount.
>>
Don't worry about it. I wouldn't marry you anyway when you proffered a turd on my finger.
>>
>>1165529
>engagement ring
>wood
This could put an entirely different meaning into "do it yourself."
>>
Before ever buying or making an engagement ring, go ring shopping or talk about weddings/rings/etc a few weeks / months ahead of time with her. The best relationship advice I got from my Dad. "You're planning the rest of your life today, she's been planning this day for her entire life." Ie, she has already planned her wedding including the rings. She expects your contribution to at least be in the ballpark.

Best of luck OP. You have a keeper if you've found a partner who will wear a customized wooden ring for the rest of their life.
>>
>>1165529
>wooden ring

see you at the divorce court.
>>
>>1165529
Somehow convince her that you paid money for it.
>>
>>1165551
Wouldn't it be worn only till the wedding?
>>
>>1165551

Not OP, but an engagement ring is not a wedding ring.
>>
>>1165553
>Engagement ring
No worries; he's not making it that far
>>
I'm lucky enough to have a girl who only want a wooden ring for the wedding, best of luck to you OP :)
>>
>>1165529
Genius. It's the perfect gold digger trap. Don't tell her it's gonna be wood, surprise her. When you present it to her she'll either love it or hem and haw about how cheap you were. If she does the latter, dump the whore. If she does the former, get her something priceless.
>>
>>1165529
wood seems like a bad choice....more novelty/fashion
>>
>>1165574
>>1165577
Some women will have a very similar engagement and wedding ring and wear them together as if it were one wider ring.

To OP, could you post a pic of your ring?
>>
>>1165529

I've made some wood rings, OP. You usually rub the wood with acetone or water or the like to raise the fiber of it, then sand them off, they won't raise as much afterward. I used Danish oil on my rings followed by a coat of shellac, then 2-3 coats of lacquer and a topcoat of beeswax for more water resistance. They seem pretty durable so far, you'll need to reapply the wax every so often since it will wear off.
>>
>>1165831
>It's the perfect gold digger trap.
Too bad it isn't. You should confirm that somehow else.
>>
>>1165533
this. but only hyper viscose epoxy. and let it soak in, the 2000 sandpaper to grind off to wood
>>
Make sure she doesn't get fat, OP. If she's over 25% equip load the ring won't work.
>>
>>1165529
>dating girl for two years

It's one thing to joke about turning gay because all women are garbage but to actually do it is pretty intense.

Many/most people I know, wear both after their wedding and buy a complementing wedding band. Probably just people who buy the expensive diamond engagement ring though.

Anyway, original advice stands, talk to her about marriage, wedding, engagement, kids, etc before committing if you haven't already. Have fun OP!
>>
Sounds good OP, post pics
Ignore the faggots itt, I have given my gf handmade wooden rings and she loves them. Sounds like you know what she likes.

>>1165997
I have tried some but have had a lot of trouble with them splitting when trying to hollow out - any tips?
>>
Is this new Pasta/meme for DIY?
>>
>>1165574
Kek matey, around here an "engagement ring" is taken to mean the ring with a big fancy diamond that she shows off to her friends for the next several decades to make them jealous. The wedding ring is the one that matches the partner's wedding ring to make a pair.

The bottom line is the primary purpose of a ring is to make other bitches buttravaged so if you want to do something weird just use three rings, one for buttravagement, one for ceremony, and one for shenanigans.

>>1166171
>>1166183

Pfft. Im bi.
>>
>>1166164
Sounds like the first ring was pretty shit desu.. I grew up in the art world. I knew people who would paint and everyone who was artistically retarded would always tell them how nice it was or they wanted it. When in all reality it was utter garbage. I think this is what really happened.. She wasn't artistically retarded and saw it for the crap it was. Your reaction to hers was almost like you where a jeweler for the last 20 years and you just completed your best piece ever for her, and she said it was shit. That's how you took it anyway. When all you really did do was google it.

But congrats on being the biggest loser on /diy/ this week.

we all know diamonds are a meme, but don't be such a poor fucking hipster peasant

when you're 90 years old and dying, you're probably not going to be thinking "man, i really regret spending that few thousand when i wanted to marry that dope ass bitch"
>>
>>1166375
If a woman would rather I waste a few thousand dollars than accept something hand made with love, care and skill, then she isn't worth marrying.

The funny thing is that my wife spent the few weeks before we got engaged dropping not subtle hints about how unethical and wasteful real diamonds are, and kept pointing out CZ rings she liked. She even made us watch Blood Diamond together. When I proposed she said yes and "I hope you didn't spend heaps of money on that".
>>
>>1166387

nothing wrong with giving her something hand made with love, care, and skill. An engagement ring is just not the thing to fuck around with. Even if she accepts it, when she finds out all her friends' rings cost $10k+ and hers was $5, that's when the cheating starts
>>
>>1166391
If your wife would be willing to cheat under any circumstance then you fucked up before you started.

It seems to depend on the type of wood and the grain orientation but I can't tell exactly what the best orientation is. I've had good luck with cherry and maple but walnut splits easily, haven't tried other woods. What I've found works well is to take a thick piece of wood, drill the inner hole mostly through with a spade bit, then use a hole saw to saw out the outer part about 80% of the way through. It leaves a sort of hollow tube that's still attached to the block of wood. I saw slices of that off to make the individual rings.

The most important thing I've found is to leave the ring thicker than the final version will be. I roughly shape the inner part and round the outer edges with a round file and do the fine sanding with a dremel or regular sandpaper wrapped around my finger.

Totally OP

Make fake supporting docs like receipts and a fake shell company and pretend it was sold to you for $6000 because it's some ultra rare wood laquered only with its own wax which is harder than most rocks or some shit. And say it's gucci.
All up the lie will cost you maximum $300 if you go all out and print fake catalogues.

That's a $6000 value for $300.

thanks friendo, here's an oak one I knocked up last night. Going to slap some varnish on and see how it looks.
Oak works as you would expect it to but it is prone to tearing where the pores are. The pores like to fill with dust also.
I think I like the look of them though.
>>
>>1166597
>>1166596
It's not just religions either. Every culture that wanted clear lines of succession and inheritance had to formalize it, and that meant high profile ceremonies to get recognition from the whole community. Religions took control of the ceremonies because they're convenient and it's a big opportunity for them to get state support.

>>
>>1165529

OP I made a ring for my gf out of birch with inlaid crushed turquoise that goes around the band, It's beautiful, she loves it, everyone loves it .Saying that, I would really not recommend doing that for an engagement ring...just because it's still wood in the end. I've thought about making her a ring when the time comes but forging it and getting much more complex. I really recommend you go a different route...
