Newfag here, but I figured this would be the best place to ask.

Can you recommend a lamp like pic related? Except for a blacklight bulb. I don't even know if Home Depot sells something that simple or basic.

They do sell things like that.
That is a lamp holder / porcelain lamp holder plus a lamp cord with plug and lamp cord switch.
>>
>>1168484

will it work for a blacklight bulb? This particular lamp in the pic is something called E27 bulb

home depot sells the component pieces, except for the wood base, but ikea sells the lamp kit all preassembled - just add a base.

as for black lights, they come in two varieties, in neon shape, from 5-inches to 2-feet long, and in regular screw-in base which is universal.

not sure it's a good idea to put a black light outside coz they get very hot, and rain drops will probably cause a temperature differential on the glass causing ti ti break.

/diy/, How does someone get into IC programming?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Reading datasheets.
>>
>>1168242
Simple circuits require no programming. If you want to program an actual microcontroller like an arduino then I suggest looking at the various manuals.
>>
Need a more specific question

Your pic shows a 555 timer. If that's what you're looking for, you need to understand resistors and capicitors.

"programming" involves microcontrollers like arduino and you'd need some programming knowledge and a basic understanding of ones and zeros.

Either way, understanding ohm's law and how Voltage, Current, and Resistance interact is a first step.

What is it you want to do?

So I just looked on Amazon, and evidently I have about 55 buckaroos sitting in my account. I was looking at some Wera Screwdrivers, since a set of cabinetmakers would be handy.

BUT

I also found out if you go by the Neji-saurus engineer name, you can get "vampliers" at around a $10 dollar reduction per piece. So now I have to figure out which ones I want. Does anyone on /diy/ have a set? And if so, are they any more useful than locking pliers for fucked screws? (And I just thought of this) Would I be better off making my own vampliers out of some husky's I have lying around?

>>
>>1168113
I've got all the tools I "need", I'm looking at what will make me more productive/efficient. Right now I take off rounded screws with VISE grips, but if these things are superior, I don't mind throwing 20 bucks down the rabbit hole.
>>
>>1168114
yes they are superior, they are basically built for this exact task, the their teeth is sharp and hardened to japanese standards and oriented for this purpose, i have only seen very good reviews of them

homemade soap
I have a alot of cedar shaving (from a planer) can i use them to made a base or something to make soap with?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1167854
huh. apparently you might be able to get tiny amounts of cedar oil out of them from steaming them in a pressure cooker, then skimming the oil off the top of the water after it cools.

Or just use a belt sander and push shavings against the belt to make cedar sawdust, and just mix that into the soap.

shavings would be too big I think, you want much more of a powdery sawdust. call it a natural microbead for a deep clean
>>
>>1167854
Simmer the shavings for 12 hours just under boil with about 2 tsps of plain or cider vinegar or any easily disolvable ph raising agent that I can't think of.

When the water gets too low, strain it into a collecting pot. Add more water to the stew and continue simmering. Do this no more than 3 times.

After, take the strained stew in the collecting pot and simmer that down for 5ish more hours.

You should have a good oil to add to lye soap.

And don't use aluminum pots.
>>
>>1168035
when you mix that with the lye, isnt it going to lower the ph, dont you want your lye to be strong when mixed with the oil?
what about just boiling the cedar chips in the oil?

I'm looking for a hobby. Id like to work on something that's worth noting. But I'm super clueless on a lot. If anyone can recommend stuff to do I'd be happy giving things a try. I'm a bit on the poor side of life and want to change that for myself as well

No money?
Learn to program.

Hobbys take money, trying to do any sort of hobby in a half ass cheap way is wasting your time.

I have 50$ spare from just paying off my bills. I want to work with tools and or something. Not too much with computers.

I know I don't want to half ass stuff. I want to be proud of my work.

I have a Yihua 939D station which came with a 907F soldering iron handle. Can I use one of those 24V 50W replacement heating elements? Will it just perform weaker or damage my station? Those 24V 50W heating elements are so much cheaper and easier to find. Thanks.

>>
it'll be fine if it's using the same type of temperature sensor inside the element.

(this is assuming you've actually gotten your meter out and measured 24V at the working end? because china.)
>>
The voltage should be the same. Not sure about the temperature sensor because they dont advertise that on the replacements, but they do have the same amount of leads, which is 4 leads. I think the only different is the wattage of the iron. The original heating element is around 60 to 80 watts from different sources. The replacement with be 50 watts. Should be same voltage. It should still work, right?
>>
I've heard about thermocouplers and thermistors. I think there is a third type also. But how can I tell which one I have visually without testing leads? I wont get to test leads on a heating element im buying online.

/sci/ Im trying to make a portable 60 hertz degausser but I need some help. See I tried to used a portable 12v battery with a 12v/120v power inverter connected to a coil but I fried the fuse inside the power inverter because the coil creates a short circuit. How do I go around this problem?
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1167357
use ohm's law (v=i*r), use the current that the inverter can supply continusly (i.e. less than the fuse value basically) and the voltage (120v) to calculate the resistance required across the output.
check the resitance per unit length of whatever wire you are making the coil from and calculate its minimum length based on resistance from above.

if the resistance is too low too much current will flow and fuse will blow.

also there are inductive elements of impedance but i don't want to blow your mind lets keep it simple.

Will changing the fuse to 30a fuse help? Strangely the inverter specs said it had a fast blow 10a fuse but inside there was a 15a fuse

I bought this power PAC used, but it doesn't have an adapter to charge it. Is it possible to charge a power PAC using a generator? Like if I hook up the clamps to a positive/ negative post on my generator, will it charge the power PAC? Or does it only charge through the adapter port?

Don't know if it hurts your power pac or not but I sell used cars for a living and sometimes I forget to charge the pac before I take it somewhere I charge it all the time by hooking it up to my truck battery and the alternator charges it pretty fast. Pic is the one I have.
>>
>>1167416
Seems like a good idea if they included a power cord for the lighter plug. Then you'll be able to charge the pac while driving.
>>
>>1167416
Alright. The concept is pretty much the same with my generator. I live in a cabin with only a generator to provide electricity, so I was hoping to use this power PAC to power my mini fridge. I hate leaving the generator on longer than necessary.

and after over 9000 hours of getting carpal tunnel from hacksaws and filing, I came out up with this.

Can someone advise me on how to heat treat and temper this so my efforts were not in vain?

This took so fucking long to cut and shape by hand it was unbelievable.

Only the end needs to be hardened. Can I just heat the end with a blowtorch until it is non-magnetic and dunk it in warm oil?

Close, but not exactly.

Hock sells this shoulder plane kit for $100. The blade (also O1 steel, only 3/16" thick compared to my 1/4") for $30. I thought I'd get 25.6x the amount of the same steel for the money and fabricate the blade myself, in /diy/ fashion of course..

Very nice op. There is one in my small town turns out. He sells pupes to head shops in the city. Sadly he wishes to remain anonymous and i have yet to discover who it is. The goal is to learn this craft and gain trust while keeping the secret.

I have a few suspicions but even if i solve the case i akin it to super heros.

Some just want left alone...

I have done nothing to deserve glass blowing classes and can pay nothing in return. Oh well. There is youtube if i really need.

Its just that so many older dudes are dying with skills and no apprentice.

There is shit that youtube just cannot teach

I bought the glue for a project once [PROTIP: gluing on the cardboard backs on IKEA bookshelves rather than just tacking them on makes the whole assembly 10x stronger]

Then a couple months later when I dug through the junk pile to find it for another project, the whole bottle became rock hard.

Never bought that stuff again. Way too expensive. My gallon of wood glue is two years old and still like new.
