So this is Animals and Nature, right?

I have a Nature-related post, please let me know if this is better suited to /out/ or something like that.

I'm an artist doing research for these seven plates I want to etch, I want to go through the seasons and draw the quintessential perennials for the season so to say.

For Spring I'm thinking of including Cherry Blossoms, Dogwood Blossoms, Tulips, Daisies?

Summer are those snowball plants, Hibiscus? And Sunflowers.

Fall is Pumpkins and maple leaves

Winter I'm going to do a plate of snow texture with maybe pomegranate seeds and pine needles.

I'm basically an ignoramus when it comes to horticulture so any and all input to what I should include or how I should go about this art would be appreciated.

Please, pretty please, and thank you.

Pic sort of related.

Spring, Summer, and Fall will be on two plates each then Winter will be on one since nothing really grows in Winter.

Our trainer had a pack of coach dogs and would use them in this situation rather than attempt to do it themselves. And it would be done in a controlled manner like the coach dogs would get beds and access to food/toys in a "class" for the dog being socialised into canine social structures.

Hello /an/,

Meet Ivan, who lately has become known as Ivan the Terrible. He's a rescue my wife and I found starving as a kitten by the side of a creek last Thanksgiving.

He's now extremely happy, spry, and loves us both to death.

He's also beating the shit out of my wife's Schnauzer Rocky. He chases the dog around the house, chews on his beard, and most annoyingly has taken to stealing Rocky's food.

The dog takes it all like a champ and has never lashed out at Ivan, bit him, or even growled (Who's a little bitch? Yes you are! Yes YOU are!)

But seriously how do I get my cat to stop stealing my dog's food? He eats his own food and just grooms protection money from the dog dish as well.

Non-retarded pic angled the correct way

Only other things I can say are Ivan eats Meow Mix and the dog eats Alpo.

The cat's food is isolated on a counter so the dog doesn't steal it and Ivan is perfectly capable and willing to jump on the counter to reach the food.

Media did a similar thing, stopped naming the race of the criminal. I always wondered why they stopped there, why not remove reference to the sex of the offender as well?

Anyway, kinda dumb, assuming you'll be able to see the animal before you adopt it.
>>
>>2270532
I worked at a shelter and the breed labels were bullshit. If the person surrendering the animal specified a breed, that's what it was labeled, even if was clearly wrong.
If they didn't, we guessed very roughly. Any hound characteristics? It's beagle mix. Does it have any bully traits? It's a pitbull mix. Small and yippy? It's a chihuahua mix. Looks like a lab at all? It's a lab mix. Black and white? It's a border collie mix. And so on.
I can't imagine any shelter really doing things all that differently, so it's a case of why have labels if they're naturally going to be inaccurate?
>>
It doesn't really matter, the breeds are almost always incorrectly identified anyways. People adopt a Greyhound dog expecting a greyhound and then it acts like a Pharaoh hound and gets returned. Shelters and professionals have a woefully low accuracy in identifying breeds anyways. If it's going to be wrong anyways, why bother having it? It will only mislead people.

Not to mention the physical characteristics make up less than 1% of the dog's character, meaning you can have a mixed dog that looks like a Golden Retriever but acts like an ACD.

>Macrauchenia: Trunkllope
>Indricotere (kinda counts since they changed the genus)
>Megatherium: Giant Southamerican sloth
>Ambulocetus: HAES supporter
>Phosruacos: Killer nandu
>Andrewsarchus: Andrew's hooved wolf
>Glyptodon (not in pic): Dinodillo
>Doedicurus: Spike-tailed dinodillo

The rest have already common names or are fine as they are, imo.

Rescues are the ones that usually go crazy on requirements. Shelters/pounds at least around here will adopt to anybody that will pay the adoption fee.

You know, by the third time you are allowed to grab the thing and throw it at the wall. Keep doing that until its peabrain figures out that biting you causes rapid relocation into a vertical surface.

We off dogs for biting people, cats should be ditto.

that's the sad part
everyone thinks it's normal for a cat to bite, but they lose their shit if a dog (even a tiny one) does it

Because it's a very poor bait
>>
Because it is not something of the nature of this animal called "dog". It seems that the wolves have undergone a disgusting and sad mutation. The human species is really a biological pest. But no problem, soon you humans will be just like them, puppets of beings who say they are superior, but in fact, they are vovardes.
The story will repeat itself ... And I will be jumping with joy amid the chaos!

I've had my dog chocolate eat before when I wasn't looking and he was fine.

The whole chocolate thing is blown out of proportion imho don't they need to eat like pounds of 98% dark chocolate to actually die?

>GSD that was not handled enough as a puppy

Why do people keep making this mistake?
>>
>>2268989
It was 2008, much nearer the height of the Cesar Millan hype. Online resources weren't as good as they are now. All I had was a book, and some people at puppy class who had sweet little spaniels and fluffy white things telling me what to do with him. The breeder who we got him from told me to take him by the scruff and give him a shake when he was being troublesome, which was always. He never stopped, never slowed down. His naps were few and far between. He was an unceasing nightmare of a puppy with three Schutzhund dogs in his immediate pedigree. He was my first dog. We'd never even had a family dog before him. In retrospect, this was a grievous error of judgement. He was a toothy little monster and I didn't know what I was doing. When he got too wild, and everyone was sick of dealing with being bitten all the time, we just put him outside for some peace and quiet. Training him was difficult, as he had no food drive whatsoever, little play drive, and no desire to please.

It's an easy mistake to make, given the right set of circumstances and coupled with the right dog. I've learnt a tremendous deal because of this dog, and from my own errors, and would probably do considerably better with any future dogs like him.

I dremel his claws between once and twice a week, and he does not bite me during this exercise. I consider this marked improvement, as he used to immediately bite anyone who so much as laid a finger on one of his toes. But I pick my battles carefully, and I'm not going to try and stuff him into a bodysuit when I can stick a horse-rug style coat on him and be done with it.

No?
>>
>>2268871
Remember, if you care about Bison, try to get people to stop breeding beefalo. It pollutes their genes and leads to all sorts of conservation problems.

>>2268896
They ARE endangered though. Even IUCN includes all the beefalo in the calculations and then fails to classify them as endangered because of that. And actually, the ORIGINAL bison species that were in North America before humans got here ARE extinct (because of humans) - Bison latifrons and Bison priscus.

hunting dogs

anyone have one? do you have to train a hunting dog from puppyhood or can any old dog learn to help you hunt? my dog played with a English springer spaniel at the park today and it got me thinking about the subject
26 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
do you even hunt?
>>
>>2268266
no, i fish a lot but ive never hunted
>>
>>2268261
Generally trained from puppyhood, as they need to get used to the sound of guns, but it's not unheard of to train an adult dog, especially hunting without a gun. I'm very much into dogs trained to hunt invasive species, like hog dogs and Python Pete. There's a level of danger to it though.

For a good introduction to guns, you should have a mother that's comfortable around guns and fire them off while she's pregnant as well as after birth. It's possible to desensitize dogs as adults but it takes a very long time sometimes.

The Plant General - Paphiopedilum Edition
>tfw too poorfag to buy one of (((pic related)))

Welcome to /plant/, the magical green place on this blue board. ITT: we compare /comfy/ gardens, post our various shit succulents and assorted granny houseplants, and generally put everyone to sleep.

/Plant/ is for the discussion of plants (obviously). Horticulturists, hobbyists and botanists welcome! Questions about plants? Want to show off your two inch dick-I mean plant? Maybe you want to start growing something new and exciting? Well come on over to /plant/!

Introducing a new basic caresheet with every thread: Paphiopedilum orchids
>mainly a montane terrestrial genus, so high drainage substrate that retains moisture, plenty of air holes in the pot if possible
>coooool temperatures - aim for 55-60f at night, 70-80f during the day
>good humidity, but not too much to make the leaves soggy (so, good air circulation is a necessity in terrariums/tents)
>reasonable light intensity, no direct sun (shade cloth can help)
>keep substrate moist at all times (NOT soaking), depending on conditions watering frequency will vary (probably once ever 5-7 days)
>these needy fuckers require fertilising, especially if you want to see any flowers (high Nitrogen content, low strength)
