The Plant General - Paphiopedilum Edition
>tfw too poorfag to buy one of (((pic related)))

Welcome to /plant/, the magical green place on this blue board. ITT: we compare /comfy/ gardens, post our various shit succulents and assorted granny houseplants, and generally put everyone to sleep.

/Plant/ is for the discussion of plants (obviously). Horticulturists, hobbyists and botanists welcome! Questions about plants? Want to show off your two inch dick-I mean plant? Maybe you want to start growing something new and exciting? Well come on over to /plant/!

Introducing a new basic caresheet with every thread: Paphiopedilum orchids
>mainly a montane terrestrial genus, so high drainage substrate that retains moisture, plenty of air holes in the pot if possible
>coooool temperatures - aim for 55-60f at night, 70-80f during the day
>good humidity, but not too much to make the leaves soggy (so, good air circulation is a necessity in terrariums/tents)
>reasonable light intensity, no direct sun (shade cloth can help)
>keep substrate moist at all times (NOT soaking), depending on conditions watering frequency will vary (probably once ever 5-7 days)
>these needy fuckers require fertilising, especially if you want to see any flowers (high Nitrogen content, low strength)

Trial and error. I started by digging holes, stuffing green shit in them, then added water. May not be the most efficient way but I still think hands on is effective.

So cold already directly on the Atlantic? 360km bird line away from the North Sea, and last night was the coldest so far this winter (yeah I already call it that because it's pretty much the same cold grey shit from now to late Feb), with a low of +4.0°C (= about 39 freedums)

Lemons have already been inside since early October since they hate everything below +10 for extended periods, my 3 still young Crassula ovata for about a week, and the Yucca elephantipes have all been moved to rain-sheltered spots, besides the one of them I had to plant in the ground because of its size, this one has now a temporary rain shelter (pic), but I'll give it a more elaborate one soon which will be upgradable to also shelter from cold, should it drop below -5 for more than a few hours this winter
Lantana camara will still have to suffer a little outside though, will only move it in once actual frosts are on the radar
>>
>>2249121
Yeah alright smartarse, you know what I meant (not outdoor shit). Barely-double-digits celsius is pretty cold for something from near the equator.

Picked up a venus flytrap today. Pretty meme plant but a nice oddity. Also got a nice succ but the name doesnt come to mind. I'll post the pics later when I find a camera.

Also whats the deal with using charcoal as a fertiziler? I have a bucket of it and was just going to mix it through my veggie patch before I start planting the seeds, how much benefit is it and what should I use it in/not use it in

God-fucking-dammit, I think I've killed my succulent.

Was really worried about over watering it, but then read instead of dribbling water onto it, it's best to soak the soil for a few mins, then leave it out to dry. So I dipped the soil/root in water for about 2 mins, then left it exposed to the air on tissue paper to draw out the excess moisture. It was fine, plant perked up, seemed good.

Today I accidentally caught a leaf and it came off at the slightest touch. Took a look and the base of all the leaves where it connects to the stem are black. Brushed my finger over the leaf buds and they broke completely off.

Is it beyond hope anons? What should I do?

Which one? There are thousands of species in different families and orders that might be called succulent
At least for me, Crassula ovata is the most forgiving one out there.
Even as a bloody beginner like me, you can neglect and not water them for weeks, but also water them every second day once the top 1cm is dry, and they just don't care, never managed to kill any of those, instead they even propagate themselves by dropping leaves that take root in the pots

newer grower here. I foolishly let my venus fly trap grow a flowering stalk before realising it'll probably kill it from over exertion. I don't think it's worth cutting as the buds have begun to form. Anything I can do to help the little guy? The leaves are starting to look very leafy and slightly tinged yellow, at least two of the traps are decent sized and healthy though.
>>

Feed it, let it get a lot of light, take care of the soil moisture and make sure you give it ample water and leave it alone

How would a flame lily plant fare as a house plant? Would it survive or would I need to wait until I get a tropical greenhouse? Planning on building an addon to my house that will be an indoor swimming pool and possibly also a greenhouse environment in the distant future when I have enough money.

I noticed Hibiscus syriacus self seeding like crazy here lately
Also the Thymus vulgaris I started indoors last winter and planted in the garden in late Feb already went to flower in June, and by July the first wild seedlings appeared, now there's already hundreds if not thousands of them popping up
Even tomatoes from last year seem to be at least competitive enough against the other native/introduced flora to sprout and go to seed again on a spot that was left to grow wild for the summer (only mowing shit away in Oct/Nov - it's not technically ours but the owner hasn't looked for it for 20 years and it's adjacent, so I gotta control weeds there now and then before they go out of control and seed themselves over)
Interestingly I've never seen things like Cortaderia selloana re-seed, though almost every garden has one of them, same with figs

Grow a dracanae. If you fuck that up, just appreciate the beauty of plants from afar
>>
>>2253741
What nobody is telling you. And what everyone here will belittle you for not realising is that you are probably overwatering the plants. Is the most common mistake for beginners.

You can make a plant go thirsty, get in really bad shape and as soon as you give it water, it will pop back up. But once you give a plant too much water and it drowns, there is no coming back.
What I recommend to all beginnera having trouble is to aim lower in watering. Dont give it water and if you see it getting sad, give it some. Keep doing that until you realise more or less the plants needs.
>>
>>2253846
>Mind blown

I think this is the only thing keeping my peace lilly alive, because it literally wilts and lets me know it needs water. Thank you anon, though I still don't understand what happened to that damn cactus I had...fucker said to get the soil just damp once or twice a month, and I was doing it once a month. Maybe one of my family members was being an idiot and over watered it while I wasn't there or something.

Yeah it happens to pretty much everyone. Plants at first are hard because there is almost zero communication so it isn't obvious to understand what's happening.

Being able to underwater a plant a bit is a way to exploit the little communication there is.

People here (specially tripfags) got so good at analysing little details on behaviour they can't comprehend how others don't see it. A lack of empathy and common sense, if you ask me.

Keep trying man, you will make it.

It doesn't send out shit like juglone which walnuts do though, or does it?
And planted in the lawn like that, any potential root shoots should get mown away regularly without chance of establishing

Anyway, another new "fun" genus seems also on its way to here... I could swear last time I checked it either wasn't on the list yet or only marked "u" (unstable) not "t" (establishing)
Apparently it gets spread by overseas tourists who have seeds on their clothing, like soles, and then hike around here. Thanks, Murrica!

Pothos-Totem-Pole.jpg
409KB, 1600x1200px
This is probably the wrong place but i will type it out here anyway:

I want to add a plant to my small flat. Now what I want is a simple vine going down the side of a wardrobe closet which is about 40 cm wide, the side that has daylight. However there is only about 20+ cm room at the top , between the wardrobe and the ceiling.

I'm thinking of going with a simple golden pothos (small or already grown, dont care). So the plan is to get a 40cm long, however wide, but never over 20cm tall pot for it. I'm fine with having it someplace lower with better sunlight while it takes root, but afterwards will it be ok up there? There will be some kind of ladder to support all of it's weight downward.

Will this be fine? Any alternative plant? And i prefer it to be as thick as possible, maybe put more than one pothos?

Alternatively i can put the pot on the floor, and have pothos grow UP the closet, which is acceptable, but i would prefer it to go down.

Forgive my cancerously large image.

Any of you guys able to identify this plant?
It started off as a tiny weed in the corner of my fence, but I was never keen on pulling it because the stems had relatively painful hairs/spikes.
One season I completely forgot it was there and it took over a good area. It's a woody plant with prickly/sharp wood, stems, and leaves. The clusters of flowers are shown. It also produces a dark colored berry of sorts.
My rabbit tends to ignore the plant altogether.

Weird to see it it at that time there, as it was rather dry here at the time and the next little stream being 3km away and 120m altitude below. We do have a tiny pond in the garden (500 litre) but I would've noticed tadpoles in there, which we did have in some previous years but not this one

Doubtful considering it's a horned frog, when I had one as a kid it sat in the same hole for its entire lifetime. If it's a huge plant with ground-resting pitchers then it could be a problem, though I imagine the frog would very quickly outgrow it. Personally I wouldn't bother, truncata are far from a decorative species, and temperature/light requirements are unlikely to be met in the same environment as the frog.
>>2259402
Yeah looks like standard B. bufo, still cute though. You'd be surprised how drought-tolerant toads are, and just how far they can travel to find pockets of moisture.

Looks like a sort of Yucca me, and more specifically I'd guess Y. elephantipes. You're very lucky if you get them to flower that easily, I have 30+ years old ones that never flowered yet
And they'll only go to seed if you have a special insect around that only occurs in their native range of Southern Mexico and Guatemala. Propagating them by cuttings is much easier

Have a Ceph looking good in the fall sunshine.
>>
hello /an/, maybe yall can help me out here.

Trying to grow a pile of aloe vera (42) pups that I took off my main plant, and was wondering if yall had any recommendations for small cheap greenhouses that would be good for succulents.

Ideally I would like to keep making more pups until I have a fucking army, because why not.

Your plant may be going through stress from temperature change or lack of water.
>>
>>2260252
The longer the stem is the easier it would be for the plant to grow roots. Just stick it in some dirt.

Horrid plant. Incredibly invasive and here in /aus/ it's depressing when you're walking right next to a river or significant body of water and it's the only thing in the understory, having killed off all else.

And even then, they harbor noisy minors which, long story short, scare birds which eats Eucalyptus-eating insects, allowing those insects to breed and prosper so to eat some material which the insect leaves.

Kill all of this stuff, everywhere where you see it. If you're ever on a walk and see this stuff, grab a large stick and find a large stem, and slam that branch into the thing.
Though, even then, the stems are known to bring about new growth.

I inherited some plants from a friend but I'm pretty inexperienced. I got a Dracena, a boston fern, peace lily, and a ponytail palm.

How often will I have to water these? Right now I just check the soil and water when dry. Should they be on a schedule of some kind? How often should I fertilize them? Also, are there any books you guys would recommend when it come to general gardening (mostly indoor) and plant care? I'd like to know more about plants in general (identification, care, etc)

California fag here, I'm new to plants.
After living in a shitty apartment, I'll finally be able to have a house in a few weeks.
I'd like to grow a pomegranate tree. Are seeds from a regular store fruit likely to grow?
>>
>>2263631
No. Buy an actual tree or treestock
>>
>>2263643
What is treestock? And how much would that cost?
Will it need to be transferred to the ground or can it grow from a pot?
>>
>>2263650
Meant rootstock. The cost won't be too great. I know the water company over here gives you a free tree every year, check if you have something similar

I actually did manage to get store-bought fruit seeds to sprout (pic is one of them now, had sprouted back in January)
I know it won't be true to the mother plant, take longer to start bearing fruit yadda yadda than buying a pre-grafted one, but then again where's the fun in that?
>>
>>2262619
I don't use paper towel...its just an extra hastle what with worrying about mold. if you do use the bowl-oer-wet-towel trick make sure the bowl is glass so you don't let the moisture out when you check the seeds. cover this all with another towel for darkness.

What I do is plant my seeds. I've never had an issue with just plunking them in a jar of dirt! cover with 1/4 inch of soil(less than a centimeter for yall britbongs) and gently moisten, possibly with a spritzer bottle
>>
>>2262619
As I said over here >>>/out/893848 , simply putting them in moist regular potting soil, a plastic bag over it (air out a little each couple days or so if you want) and then on top of a radiator adjacent to the window, so it's always around 30C and gets enough light, has never failed me, even with seeds that should have needed to be stratified beforehand.
Once the first seedlings have popped up you want to remove any plastic bag and either water much more or place it cooler (normal room temp) for the rest to come up

jungle fern. you need to re-pot that guy or he'll be sad. look how rootbound it is.

cost $5 for soil and $15 for a nice pot at your local supermarket.

put some gravel at the bottom of the new pot
>>
>>2264947

Thank you! Is there a more specific name though? Googling jungle fern didn't get me specific care instructions.
>>
>>2264959
I would say chamaedorea elegans, the basic bitch of plants.
>>
>>2264959
all plants are the same: don't over water them. make sure the soil has plenty of drainage. sunlight. dun deal.

mimic the terrain of a jungle in which a fern would grow, duh.

nutrient rich soil, so store bought stuff since you don't want fresh manure in your house(basic assumption, that one)

gravel at the bottom of the pot is great for proper drainage.

every time you replant make sure you replant into a larger pot.

this is a great first plant, anon. jungle ferns are notoriously resistant to dumbass.

That's a non-issue most of the times, it's just that now in the cold season, you tend to open the windows less, there's more static air etc, so molds will show up if your potting soil is rich in undecomposed organic material. Unless it crawls up the plant there's usually nothing to worry about, it's more likely to be a good thing as the molds make nutrients available to the plants
>>
>>2265294
awesome, thanks. No harm in brushing it off?

Poor flytrap isnt looking good still. Been getting some good sun and plenty of water. Finally made up some netting to keep birds out, fuckers messing with my plants is what started all this

On the upside the moss is starting to green up, odd since I thought I only got the dried, dead stuff.
>>
>>2265522
That VFT is dead. You can tell because the base of the leaves are dead or dying too. Natural cellular senescence starts from the tip of the leaf and moves inward. A dead plant's leaves are, well, dead so they die 'evenly', if you will.

The moss is turning green because you are watering too much and algae is actually growing in it.

Sorry man. Sleep tight snapper

Alright folks I picked this up right as the flora shop people were going to throw it out. Only cost me $1. Can it make it? Leaves are mostly firm still, has new roots growing, but the old roots are dead and rotting.
>>
>>2268180
Yeah looks pretty damn big and healthy considering they were prepared to bin it. New roots look ok, let it settle in for a while and it should bounce back easy.
>>
>>2268264
Alright cool. I cut a leaf off that had obvious signs of mold and treated the stump with some alcohol to sterilize it. I then repotted it and cut all of the rotting, stinking roots off and now it's sitting on my desk. I'll see how it does
>>
>>2268350
>I then repotted it
Hopefully you used a medium without moss.
>>
>>2268442
I used a little bit at the bottom (literally less than 3 grams) to keep my perlite and bark from falling through. Other than that, it's all orchid bark, and perlite. I'm going to mist the roots every day instead of counting on the media to retain water
>>
>>2268180
Why were they going to toss that thing? It is a mature plant producing healthy aerial roots... And you got that thing for a buck too that's a steal
>>
>>2268587
I'm guessing because it stopped flowering. A lot of florists/supermarkets/big box stores trash plants that are no longer in their peak attractiveness. It's a shame too. Most plants that are tossed are usually perfectly fine; they're just not flowering or maybe they're going dormant.
