help! my dog doesn't listen to me

so I spent all day yesterday following him around, I would ring a bell then give him cheese hoping he would associate bell with snacks and come running when he goes off somewhere or is barking and I want him to stop

it didn't work and now I'm out of cheese, the bell gets no response out of him either

Buy freeze dried liver, and rather than the bell use your voice. My dog picked up marker training in no time; whenever the dog is doing something good mark it with "yes" in a happy manner and then immediately give the treat. Only give praise after the dog has the treat so they dont confuse "good dog!" With the marker "yes". This way its very clear they are doing what it is you want them to do.

With my dog i began marking anytime he laid down, sat or started chewing on a toy. Make sure to mark right when the behavior is complete, so dog fully in a sit or laying on the ground. Eventually my dog started perking his ears towards me whenever i said yes and would even begin to watch me as he laid down waiting for the mark and treat. This may take some time, dont expect it to happen on the very first day. The key with dogs is persistence and patience.

What is it exactly you would like your dog to learn? Basic commands?
>>
>>2267780
basically he is a shithead and only listens when he wants to, but the biggest thing is getting him to come inside when I want him inside

he used to be a good boy, never barked, always came when I called him, and never ran off. If he went out to the front he never left the property and would stay on the grass.

then I moved and now he doesn't listen, but I have been here for 3 years. It's the other dogs in the next yard, they are a bad influence on him.
>>
>>2267788
Well once he's responsive to your marker training you need to teach him sit and stay. Once he has a good stay you can move on to recall. I would begin training in the house and then move outside once hes got that down to work on getting him to listen with distractions like the other dogs. Have a leash on him even in the house so you can do quick corrections while training and it will keep him from wondering off.

This is really as much help as i can be for now, in order to get the proper technique to teach the commands i would have to physically show you.

Hey guys, worried about my cat in pic related.
She's very young and we've had her for about two months now, nothing wrong at all with her up until this morning when we woke up and we saw her limping. We picked her up and looked at her right front paw and it almost looked dislocated. If you put pressure on it she would cry but once you let her down she would go back to playing.

What should we do? Just wait it off or take her to the vet immediately? We don't have that much money for anything more than a regular checkup. Thank you in advance

>hurr durr I'm fucking retarded
you don't "wait off" a dislocation you mouthbreathing faggot, take her to the vet. Or, you can enjoy having a cat that's crippled for life.
>>
>>2267378
Definitely take her to the vet!
If money is really an option you can discuss it with your vet, some are more sympathize than others and will perform certain things for reduced charges (or even free!). There's also organizations that help pay for vet bills, just a quick Google search should bring you to some.
>>
>>2267378
VET. NOW.

So can anything be done to prevent face mauling later in life? Neutering, dental removal? It's really shitty these guys are perfect pets when young only to have them then turn into demons later in life.

Not really, you have to be careful. They'll recognize you as a friend but it's not worth the trouble.
>>
Thats true of literally every animal. Tigers and bears also make great pets when they are infants.

But no, there is nothing you can do.
>>
>>2267240
Genetic modification would be a great way to tame them. However, there's already been quite a few agreements made to never genetically modify primates.

Now that the dust has settled, which is the better working dog: German Shepherd or Belgian Malinois?
Is there another breed of dog that could possibly perform on the same level as these two have?
20 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
See: Dutch Shepherd
>>
>>2266032
What type of work? Different breeds are good for different purposes. A German Shepherd is excellent at police work. I see a lot of Malinois as military dogs. A border collie is the best sheep herder. A molosser like a Rottweiler would be best for pulling a cart on your farm.
>>
>>2266039
I specifically meant military/police/protection work. What these breeds are most known for.

>>2266038
Dutchies are great, but they're known to be more sensitive than Mals. Mals are more forgiving and willing to "roll with the punches".

Hey /an/, /k/ommando here. I have a security job in the middle of nowhere at a scrap yard, and there's some cats and raccoons around by the dumpster.

>couple weeks ago see a little kitten
>very shy, runs away if I try to go near
>one day it's under my car
>to into the break room and grab some crackers
>lay down by my car with my flashlight and feed it
>snifs my hand, then backs off
>don't see it for a while
>yesterday, see it again
>lie down again and feed it more crackers
>get to pet it
>get to pick it up
>bring it inside to cuddle with
>it won't last the winter outside
>decide to adopt it since my border collie passed away a couple months ago

I'm taking it to the vet today for a check up and shots

This is my first cat, anything I need to know?
>pic related, named it crackers (think it's a female but it's so young it's hard to tell)

I'd recommend keeping it indoors. Even though it's been outside, it'll live a longer life indoors. Just be sure to play with it for about half an hour a day, show affection to it, and also give it some time to adjust to its environment.

If he wants to go outside, I'd recommend letting it outside on a leash. Let it look at birds, squirrels, etc.

He's a cute little guy. I'm sure you'll take good care of him.

Did it have a collar when you found it? When you take it into the vet for checkups and vaxx, have them look for a microchip.

Hello, /an/. I'm watching over my parents senior dog for about a month while they're away on a trip. He's a small breed; eleven years old and is generally a good dog indoors. He doesn't tear up furniture, shit/piss all over the house, greets house guest, etc.

The problem is that he is an embarrassment on leash due to his formally mentioned poor training. He'll bark and pull at every fast moving object (joggers, bicycles, mail trucks) and god forbid he ever cross paths with ANY quadruped bigger than the size of a groundhog.

I don't have much experience in training dogs, but I want to help this one develop better leash habits. What are some of the best methods and where should I begin?

Try a sensation harness. It'll stop him from pulling at least, and can distract him if he tries barking. Ideally you'll only need him in one for a week before he learns that running off while on a leash is a dumb thing to do. If you don't want to/can't get this, try an ordinary or 'no-pull' harness like the one from thundershirt.
>>

Alright, twenty or so dollars for a harness isn't too tall of an order, but what about the barking?

see those fangs in her mouth? those are for tearing flesh apart. since she cant tear flesh apart (and also not hunt and have a proper canine lifestyle because you imprison it in your home 24/7) she chose another outlet.

Hi /an/. I used to be from /diy/, /g/, /b/, and /x/, but I haven't been on 4chan in a while. I'm coming to you today with a sad story, and hoping to get maybe some answers or clues about what happened.

Yesterday, we all went to my parents' house to celebrate the holiday. They had two chocolate labs - both rescues so we don't know their exact ages, but they've had them for nine or maybe ten years. One is geriatric, the other about 10 or 11 years old.

The younger had been coughing for just over two weeks. The vet called it "kennel cough", and said that it should go away after up to three weeks. It's caused by a viral infection and just needs to run its course. But other than that, this dog was running around, being playful, cuddling with me and my children, and begging for turkey - all normal dog stuff.

Less than an hour after that, he was laying on his side, and howled softly (we thought in response to howling wolves on the TV). Shortly after that, we noticed he wasn't breathing. I've had First Aid, CPR, and SAR training, and my mom is an RN, so we all tried our best to do CPR on him for what must have been about 20 minutes, but we couldn't save him.

There are two things I don't understand:
1) Kennel cough is not supposed to be fatal
2) This dog was HEALTHY apart from a cough, and the coughs were like 45 minutes apart, and then he just died?

###If anyone has any information about anything like this, I would appreciate it if it was shared in this thread.###

I'm going to encourage my folks to order a necropsy or some sort of post-mortem exam figure this out.

BTW, less than an hour after doing CPR on this dog, I've got a crap ton of mucous - is it possible I caught something? I don't want to spread it to my kids or pets.

>2) This dog was HEALTHY apart from a cough
you know this for a fact because he had a full vet checkup recently or are you assuming it because he seemed to be happy and playful?

it could be that with all the excitement of the party and the viral infection that he overexerted himself.
>>
Kennel cough is highly contagious. If you do not vaxx your own dogs for it, you should take the appropriate steps.
>>
>>2269499
>you know this for a fact because he had a full vet checkup recently or are you assuming it because he seemed to be happy and playful?
He did see the vet in the week prior, and the vet said that aside from the cough, he was healthy.

>it could be that with all the excitement of the party and the viral infection that he overexerted himself.
This is a good point. According to my parents, he hadn't been acting lethargic prior to this, just coughing. But, this thought had crossed my mind as well. Maybe his heart had been under extra stress from troubled breathing and coughing, and this caused him to suffer a heart attack, but again, he had been acting this way for the entire duration of the cough - playful and happy.

>Kennel cough is highly contagious. If you do not vaxx your own dogs for it, you should take the appropriate steps.
I only have cats. I'm worried about the cats or my children getting it, but I haven't really found anything that states it can jump species like this.

I'm not entirely convinced this dog has kennel cough, or if he did, I'm not convinced he didn't also have something else - either as a result of KC or something else entirely.
