How does one achieve this effect? The completely white (or sometimes black) background. I love how it makes the subject pop, but have no idea how to do it.
>>2952946
It's very possible that it's just photoshopped. Just replace the sky with a white background
>>2952957
I assume it is, but how do I do this in photoshop, note I'm using paint.net because I'm to cheap for lightroom.
What is the best why to achieve these kinds of photo's, is this done in photoshop or is this just the work of certain lenses and settings?
flash
vsco
>>2952872
Is it literally just the use of the flash that creates this effect, also what is vsco
>>2952872
Also what about this?
Hello /p/, I'm new to photography (have used film cameras before though), and need some help. I've recently bought myself a Canon 1300D as a beginner camera because I'm poor.
I'm going to Japan pretty soon, and need to learn to use my camera properly for taking pictures. I'm planning on shooting a short-film which I know how to do, but I want to take some pictures and I don't understand anything.
I took a photography class way back in the 10th grade, so I know a bit about ISO and all that shit, but I don't actually know how to use my camera. Should I just stick to the Automatic mode and let it do all the work for me?

Buy the fastest and largest memory cards you can get your hands on.
I have a 650D, is the 1300D like newer in that line or a better system? I ask because the autofocus on the kit lens that came with the 650D was piss. It clicked and was recorded during the video.
So, look up how focusing works on yours. Manual focus on videos might look nice too tho.
As for sound, if sound is paramount to you, consider getting a small directional microphone.
Finally, automatic is good enough now a days you shouldn't worry. But I recommend put it manual and just practice changing aperture and shutter speed. And seeing how you control the light that goes in.
Disclaimer: I know doodley squat about video, a maybe a little more about photography. But I think it's worth considering.
>>2952458
I purchased a 128GB SD card, so that should suffice.
I'm pretty sure you're right about the 1300D just being a newer version in the line.
I've got sound and all that covered for the video aspect, but it won't matter too much really as I'll be used music and stuff for the video.
Thanks for the help, I'll have to mess about with the camera a bit more to get the hang of it, hopefully it's not that much harder than the basic camera I used back in high school.
>>2952453
For that price you could've got a real camera like the Pentax K-50
Which do you use and why? What does the program you use offer that the opposing program doesn't?
>>2952059
Personally I use Bridge>ACR>PS for everything
LR to organize and develop across the batch > PS to touch up > LR to manage versions via virtual copies, resize and output
>>2952059
i use both. lightroom is excellent for organising, tagging etc, i usually do my raw editing there, recovering highlights, shadows etc, maybe some simple masking before i export it to photoshop to do some more heavy editing, while lightroom is faster and more streamlined to use, photoshop has tonnes of tools that are invaluable, like luminosity masking, color range selection, frequency separation, clone stamping out distracting objects, sometimes youll want to use a tad noise to remove banding etc. when the heavy editing is done, i save back to lightroom and add some global hsl adjustments, tone curves and split toning.
>Need to wake up before sunrise, get ready , and get to your spot before the sun comes up to get good photos
Im sorry how the fuck is this possible for anyone that has a full time job , getting up is hard enough at normal times
and its still daylight savings, soon Sunrise will be at 5am so that means you would need to be up at 3 at least.
I hear sunrise is the way to get the best pictures but jesus christ how?
>>2951805
go to bed early, I go to sleep at 8pm or so, that way I am always up at 3 - 4am
Boy if only there were a few days each week where you wouldn't have to work
I mean you could place them at the end of the week, maybe something like Saturday and Sunday could call them "End of the week days" or something like that...really makes you think huh
>>2951840
Jesus , I won't get up early on my free days as well.
I just want to know how to take sunrise photos
any tips on shooting long exposure in the daylight? because when i do it my led screen just turns completely white.
>>2951670
Can't tell if you're memeing right now.
But you need a dark ND filter, 10 stops or darker.
I've got a 15 stop ND that can get like 5+ minute long exposures mid day
>>2951670
Ya. Stop doing long exposure. Show me any good paid photographer that does it.
>>2951672
he probably not trying to get paid with long exposures
Took this photo with a nikkor 105mm 2.8 d I bought used + kenko teleconverter 2x, bought used too.
But the depth field is very shallow, and any increase of apperture besides f22 makes the sharpness much worse.
Multiple exposures changing the focus would be impossible as my tripod is not good and by just breathing near it it would already change the entire frame.
Any other way?

Pretty much this. Make sure if you get one you get a geared one. f5.6-f11 generally is the maximum sharpness window depending crop factor and lens.
>>2951418
the smallest aperture you can use without getting soft images generally depends on pixel density of your sensor.
for a 24mp nikon crop sensor, you don't want to use f/16 and above
four thirds with its higher pixel density starts getting visibly softer at f/11 already, while on an ancient 12mp FF sensor you can use up to f/22

Why would you not post an example of the stuck pixel?
You might not be able to fix it, shit just happens sometimes. I've got a few on my camera. but 99% of the time it won't really be noticeable. Just use the spot removal tool and take it out, no big deal
>>2951088
You should post a photo of it.
Do you mean a hot pixel by chance? IIRC sensors get hot pixels while LCD displays get stuck pixels.
Most cameras have firmware that detects hot pixels and will change the mosaic process to ignore them, but if for whatever reason your camera doesn't detect it, there's processes that let you force your camera into detecting it.
On my Sony cam, the fix for it is to forward the date by one month and then turn it off and on, it'll take an exposure and pause for a bit and remove any hot pixels I had.
Your cam probably has a solution as well, maybe try fucking around with the manual sensor cleaning options and restarting it after performing them, or just google hot/dead/stuck pixel fixes for your model, it usually can be rid of with just a few menu options

A friend contacted me and wanted me to shoot some pictures of his band for him. I've never done a shoot before and have no idea what to expect. Their style is hipster indie type music. What should I go for in the photos and how many should I shoot? What else should I be aware of?
Find a place with good even lighting. Expose for the faces. Shooting groups sucks.
Take time with your shots. Take lots of shots, but make sure you're putting thought into each one. Don't take 800 shots and only choose the best 200. That's my advice.

How does scanning negatives work? By that I mean, what would the quality and reslution be nce it is a digital file?
I would like to shoot some MF film and then have it scanned.. What sort of quality and resolution could I expect in comparison to my digital RAWS?
What file type could I expect to receive? AND What sort of flexibility would the file have in pst/ (again in comparisn to a digital raw file)

Direct me to your post in the general and I'll score your original question out of 10 before helping you. I'm willing to bet it was a vague as fuck question.
The truth is that it depends entirely on what you're looking to do with your scans. Are you intending to print them, print them big? Just for web viewing? What size do you need for web if so. Do you have a digital camera, what's your budget for a flatbed etc etc.
>What file type could I expect to receive? AND What sort of flexibility would the file have in pst/ (again in comparisn to a digital raw file)
Depends entirely on how you scan senpai. Can't really give you an answer until it's known what you're looking to do and how you're going to be scanning.
Thnaks for reading my post.
>>2949776
that really depends
here is one of my scans, after being cropped it can still print a native 24x24" 300dpi print, original file would have been 28x28" at 300dpi.

Scans out of the coolscan can be Jpg, Tiff, or NEF.
Bit depth can also be selected depending on the scanner. Drum Scans are god but the CCD scanners can often do a pretty good job, and flat beds are good enough for some people, it depends on how much you want to spend.

Hey /p/eople, I'm back with some more Provia shots. Got myself a 81A filter that was used in some of these and I'm liking the added warmth it gives!
The first set I'm going to upload is the beginning of a series which aims to document a major industrial area here in Japan. The idea stemmed from the stereotypical images that Japan is associated with (namely depicting either traditional Japan such as the tourist spots in Kyoto or Ise or hyper-urban Japan such as Osaka or Tokyo). My goal is to show that Japan isn't all temples and neon lights and that the places between, while less glamorous, still contain the Japanese essence,
The main goal of documenting this roughly 10-15km radius surrounding this particular industrial core is to show the area as well as the people and community living and working within it. I've only shot 2 rolls of 120 thus far, so don't have many images to post but this gives a bit of an idea of the scales I'll be using (from the distant vistas, to the make-up of the neighborhoods, to the people themselves).
One motif that I plan to carry through the series are the massive smokestacks. I hope to always have them somewhere in the frame. Sometimes they'll be tiny while other times I may be only able to fit part of the base in the frame. This way the viewer is always able to grasp how far they are from the central industrial hub.
I'd love to hear any and all feedback on the images, as well as the idea behind this. Will post as I edit.

I realize the stacks on their own have the potential to get repetitious extremely quickly. I plan to have lots of other pictures where they play minimal rolls in subject matter / composition to help balance shots like these out. I also hope to include more people and human activities in the larger scenes like this.

I shot a few images that actually don't contain the stacks at all in them. As cool as it would be to always have them present in the frame, that constraint will definitely limit what scenes I can shoot. Thoughts on how well these could fit into the series would be great.

I took these pictures using my Nexus 6 mounted over a 40mm eyepiece that is connected to a Celestron Powerseeker 80eq.
Was gonna stream on periscope but my wifi keeps losing connection so I said fuck it my router is on the other side of the house and the signal has to go through like 5 walls before it gets to where I am.
The full moon is by far the worst time to shoot the moon, so no.
