Hey /p/eople, I'm back with some more Provia shots. Got myself a 81A filter that was used in some of these and I'm liking the added warmth it gives!

The first set I'm going to upload is the beginning of a series which aims to document a major industrial area here in Japan. The idea stemmed from the stereotypical images that Japan is associated with (namely depicting either traditional Japan such as the tourist spots in Kyoto or Ise or hyper-urban Japan such as Osaka or Tokyo). My goal is to show that Japan isn't all temples and neon lights and that the places between, while less glamorous, still contain the Japanese essence,

The main goal of documenting this roughly 10-15km radius surrounding this particular industrial core is to show the area as well as the people and community living and working within it. I've only shot 2 rolls of 120 thus far, so don't have many images to post but this gives a bit of an idea of the scales I'll be using (from the distant vistas, to the make-up of the neighborhoods, to the people themselves).

One motif that I plan to carry through the series are the massive smokestacks. I hope to always have them somewhere in the frame. Sometimes they'll be tiny while other times I may be only able to fit part of the base in the frame. This way the viewer is always able to grasp how far they are from the central industrial hub.

I'd love to hear any and all feedback on the images, as well as the idea behind this. Will post as I edit.

I realize the stacks on their own have the potential to get repetitious extremely quickly. I plan to have lots of other pictures where they play minimal rolls in subject matter / composition to help balance shots like these out. I also hope to include more people and human activities in the larger scenes like this.

I shot a few images that actually don't contain the stacks at all in them. As cool as it would be to always have them present in the frame, that constraint will definitely limit what scenes I can shoot. Thoughts on how well these could fit into the series would be great.

This is the guy from the previous photo. 5 minutes later he came up to me asking where I was from. I was sitting down on a concrete ledge looking out at the ocean waiting for the sun to get lower in the sky. He took a seat next to me and we shot the shit for over an hour. He was digging for clams that he would then use as bait for catching unagi. He was a really friendly guy and told me if I'm ever there at the same time I'll probably see him. This was my first time ever asking a stranger for a portrait and I know it's pretty shit. I'm wanting to include a fair number of portraits in this series so any tips about going about that would be fantastic!

What Japanese essence are you trying to capture? I think what you're doing is interesting but I don't know if you're really capturing Japan so much as shots that happen to be in Japan.

Something about the tower being in the center of the frame seems off to me but I do like that the rubbish in the foreground. I like it!

I lived in Tokyo for 6 months and just got back in August. I walked around a lot downtown but some of my favorite shots were in run-down areas in Kamakura. I like the idea behind your series, more people need to understand that I think. Hope it turns out well for you.

I have an honest question op, and this isn't intended as a shitpost. I've shot some medium format provia myself, and it isn't nearly this contrasty. Did you purposely underexpose, is this your scan process (I too scan with a sony), or is this a creative choice in post-processing?

I'm glad to hear about you having a similar experience in Japan and I agree more people should understand/see this side of Japan. Too many people think all of Japan is like Tokyo or Kyoto when in reality those types of 'scenic' locations make up a very small percentage of what you see when you travel around Japan. It's like thinking America is LA, New York, the Rockies, and the Grand Canyon.

I was shooting at box speed and think next time I'll rate the film at 80. I'm still learning how to best shoot this film. The slides themselves are slightly under so I boosted the highlights to bring them back to just below clipping level. They do have quite a bit of contrast. I didn't mess with shadow levels at all in these and the shadows looks just as they do on the slides themselves. Shooting late afternoon on a crisp day probably helped give some extra contrast too.

I'm not trying to speak for OP here, but I really don't think that is what he is going for. These areas he seems to be shooting in is far different from "country-side Japanese town", they're much more industrial. Both times I've traveled to Japan I was really struck by the distinctiveness, repetitiveness and a kind of banal beauty of the peri-urban areas, with a lot of housing mixed with agricultural and industrial areas. These areas are definitely under represented in most Japan related photography.

Thanks so much for the comments zx! I passed this city over a dozen times before finally deciding to check it out and shoot it. Next time you come back be sure to stop somewhere and walk around. It's quite different from any industrial area I'd been in before.

There's just a road and sidewalk down there. I don't know why, but I hate when you get a triangle of road cutting across the bottom of the frame when shooting square. There wasn't anything interesting further down so I opted for more sky/tower instead of a slice of road.

Completely agree again. I had no idea how to position him in relation to the angled sun. If anyone has any tips for shooting portraits in hard sidelight without reflectors/flashes I'm all ears!

Definitely true. This city has a population of 320,000. Not a huge city by any means, but it surely isn't country-side Japan. Perhaps the appearance of rice fields paints it as more rural than it actually is...but rice fields are pretty much everywhere in Japan.

Ahh, I see what you mean. Is that really what it looks like on the light table? The left side of that building looks almost HDR or shadow-bumped in post. Is there a building out of frame acting as a giant light bounce? My slides definitely don't have that much shadow detail when viewed on a light table. Do you shoot your Provia at box speed?

this one is the strongest imo. personally, i don't particularly care too much about the photos with people in them, at least the one portrait that is the most prominent. i think this photo is as close as i want to be. it gives me a lot more questions than the actual portrait of a person which acts as a symbol of what the work is supposed to be about. i kinda think that is stretching it for me.. again just my opinion. i enjoy the work though. if you haven't already - check out the Bechers. matt siber also has group of images called 'idol structures' which seems to kind of relate to your photos in a way.

Yeah, on a 'new' computer with a pretty shit screen. I realize lots of these have a magenta cast, which I think I've fixed (pic related please let me know how this compares to the OP image).

Since processing has nothing to do with composition or idea I don't see why I need to get processing down before I go out shooting? I can always process correctly later. Not like I'm printing a book anytime soon.
