Youtube is a valuable recourse for beginners wanting to go /out/ You obviously know nothing and have nothing to contribute. Not sure what you're doing here.
This is a question directed for any Arborists or Foresters from the United States. What kind of opportunities are there for Arborists from other countries to come out and work in the US within the Forestry industry or the commercial tree surgery work? I recently completed a diploma in Arboriculture & Forestry. Is it a tough market for foreigners to get a job in the US?
Looks like I need to apply for a work visa
>>812688
You better do it before 2017

Me and my parents are planning on taking a two-week trip out east next month, and are going to be spending half of it on the western shores of Lake George, NY.
For anyone who's gone hiking in the Adirondacks before, what trails would you recommend? Preferably, I'm looking for ones that are mildly challenging and ones that aren't overflowing with tourists.
>>812436
You could say I'm uh.. "familiar" with it. Hiking the ADKs in general also.
Hiking options close to Lake George aren't particularly numerous (5-6 various mountains around the lake) but several do all have incredible views if you are up for hiking a mountain.
Two that I've done multiple times each are Buck Mtn and Black Mtn on the Eastern Shore. They are pretty similar and about 2.5-3 mi up and back, somewhat challenging cardio-wise, and have the 2 best views of the lake. Buck looks across the southern basin right toward The Sagamore and is the better one imo. Black Mtn is slightly further up the lake and has a view of the Narrows (islands in lake mid section). Would highly recommend both. You will see a few sets up people up and back and maybe a dozen at the summit, but it's Lake George, hard to escape people in the summer. There are also some other trails around the bases of these two mountains that are non-mountain hikes or smaller mtn hikes but probably not much to see. Both Buck/Black Mtn areas are about a 40 min drive around the south end of the lake and back up. Make sure NOT to take rt 9L along the eastern shore like your GPS might tell you to. It's a dead end at a private road.
Prospect Mtn is the most touristy because it's right in Lake George and you can drive your car up ($10 toll).
The one difficult option would be the Tongue Mtn range midway up the lake. It's a mountain peninsula and there is a loop along the ridge and the shore that's 10+ mi round trip. The pic you posted is actually taken from somewhere along it.
That's pretty much it for hikes in the immediate LG area. The rest of the ADKs ranges from 1-5 hours away and has many hundreds of other choices, depends what you want. You might want to get a National Geographics Trail's Illustrated map of whatever area of the ADKs you want hike, includes Lake George.
>>812436
High Peaks or bust. Lake George is a pretty comfy place to stay, though.
Thanks guys, I'll try to take those into consideration.
Was living on state land in washington. Been here for a few weeks with this set up. Forest service and a sheriff rolled up on me. Told me to leave or be ticketed then arrested. Can they arrest me for being on state land for a long term camp? I'm firefighting and trying to live cheap.
Thanks sc/out/s. Pls no bully.
>>812405
there is a limited time you can stay on state or blm land, i think it is 30 days however state land may be closer to 20
In Michigan you just have to move your campsite an appreciable distance (like a half mile or so) after 3 weeks, idk how it works in WA though
>>812405
Dunno about the laws in Washington but in most places you're best bet is to get your own plot of land
Or relocate every week or so
If you're sailing across the ocean, how realistic is it to power a laptop the whole trip? I'm wondering if sailing and programming could work together. After a bit of research most people just seem to recommend notebooks and packing extra batteries
Rig up solar panels, maybe a tiny windmill attached to a motor to charge batteries.
>>812202
Are solar panels an option? What about windmills? I'd imagine there would be plenty of ways to generate power on a boat.
>>812202
Being this stupid and not knowing about Solar panel chargers.

Does /out/ like eating MREs?
Also, this channel of MRE sampling happens to be really comfy as fuck.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgICbOwP7NQ
Try going for days straight of MREs. Not only does it get bland but in my experience they can really block up your insides. For a few days its ok but not after a week straight.
packed 3 MREs for roskilde festival, tasted great. was easy as fuck and all the extra stuff in em
was great, Chili and macaroni was definately the best ones. would definately pack them again for /out/ activities, nice to have non-dehydrated food
My favorite MRE channel is the guy from New Zealand

My girlfriend and I were walking the dog on some trails and we found a lot of these berries growing.
Are they safe to eat? was hoping to make some jam with them.

They are blackberries. Delicious.

How could you not know about blackberries being edible? Am I being baited?
Red and green ones aren't ripe
Black/purple ones are
Have fun
Hey /out/, I'm looking for some advice.
I've been /out/ since I can remember pretty much. Sleeping outside in garden dens being the first of it. My wife too has always had the urge, though it took a little guidance and encouragement to make it flourish. We're both in our 30s, no kids, livin' the good life.
As families do, people got talking. This year my wife got talked into going to a site with one of her sisters, their kids and another set of kids from the family (one of my wife's sisters is too much of a tightass to buy a tent and go, so has foisted her kids off) so I am going camping for the 1st time with five kids aged nine down to a year old. I have no fucking idea what to do. I am /out/ (although disabled, I'm it clawing back) wife is casual tier out (likes easy hikes in good weather) rest of family are pale, pasty, never been outside x factor watchers. The kids aren't like we were as kids. we used to /out/ 'erry day...these kids all *have to have* cbeebies (fucktard britbong tv for kids) on 24/7, live on tendies, and are lost without ipads and a wifi connection. None of them can ride a bike, let alone own one. this is what I'm up against.
To rub salt in the would, my mother in law is also coming along with a pair of her camperv& buddies. mother inlaw is another total no-/out and the camperv& buddies are mid 60s and like to hit naturist sites...
No matter which way I play this, it's going to be a clusterfuck. Even though it's full on car glamping, the rest of the family is going to be woefully under prepared, complain at every last thing outside of the normal scope of their daily activities, and the kids will be wild and into everything before they become unmanageable when they become bored.
TL:DR
Forced to take indoor family/bratish kids camping. I cant get out of it, it's one of those family commitment bullshit things. How do I survive without losing my mind? We have no Skinwalkers in Wales take 'em away.

Liquor
>>809659
Booze ain't an option sadly. The medication I'm makes it so that all it takes is a sniff of something for me and I'm out cold
>>809505
So don't let them get bored. /out is a fucking infinite wonderland of shit for kids to do. Just make sure it's structured. Make everything a competition. Make them your helpers.
And then never ever ever let your kids be like they are.
As for the mother in law and ask that shit, you've dug your own grave, anon. The only way to avoid it is to put your foot down and say no to that stupid shit. Don't say you can't, that's pussy shit.
hey
german here, I was on vacation in texas and had a lot of fun there boating and fishing and being /out/
now I'm back in my big city and I was wondering do you know any good /out/ related movies/tvshows/vidya/books so I can relive my outdoor experience before I can go /out/ again?
thx in advance

Hello /out/! I've decided to become the next Johnny Appleseed, planting apple trees wherever I go hiking.
I've already got a few clearings in some state game lands near me picked out, but I've never really planted trees before. Would it be better to plant a bunch of germinated seeds close together, or would it be best to grow saplings at home and take them with me to plant? If the latter, how would you recommend that I carry them?
I hope you realize you can't just dump apple seeds and expect them to grow.
and keep your shit trees out of public parks, no ones waiting for your shitty apples.
Do some research before you go ahead with your plan. If you just plant seeds you'll probably just end up with shitty apples no one wants.
>>808498
Thats not how planting apple trees works (if you want people to be able to eat them that is).
For example if you wanted a Granny Smith apple tree you cant just plant seeds from a Granny Smith apple. The apples you would get from that tree would most likely be nothing like Granny Smith apples.
You need to cut a branch from the apple tree you want, put it into rooting hormone and then plant that shit where you want.
hey /out/
I've always had the worst knledge of knot tying in explorers and even today I only know how to tie 2 basic knots so I was wondering
what are your favourite and most useful knots you know?
thanks
also if you could give the name of the knot that would be great
Palomar for fishing hooks
Albright for merging 2 lengths of line
Arbor for pretty much everything else
When in doubt if you dont know knots, tie lots
>>800147
Tautline Hitch, because it is really useful when for tent lines, you can adjust tension and such.
