Well /out/ the time has come. I have never fit into normal society due to being socially retard and a solid 1/10. I would rather be dead than have to inflict myself on other people so I'm going to disappear into the woods and not come back. I'm taking public transit as far as I can then hiking around 200 km to a property I own in the middle of no where. I might not make it but if I do I'll post pics.

Pics of my set up are coming but I'm at my last day at work to scrap up enough cash for the ticket to the town nearest my destination.

Over the last year, I've been cultivating an interest in found sound and field recording. It seems like a very /out/ hobby, and I know we have at least one active recordist (MJC Recordings) on this board, so I'm wondering if there are any others, or at least any interested parties. Discuss field recording and the myriad sounds of nature here!

Some basic information:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_recording (overview)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioacoustics (more technical, nature-oriented subject)

http://jezrileyfrench-aquietposition.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-idyll-do-we-ever-actually-hear.html#links (a different take on fr and our perception of 'nature' overall from a prolific recordist)

Some work I've compiled:

https://vimeo.com/31758893 (contact mic play)

https://mappa.bandcamp.com/album/34-1113n-111-954w (more work with contact mics, this time a cohesive project! read the description; context is often paramount)

https://jonasgruska.bandcamp.com/album/l-ky (slovakian meadow sounds by one of favorite recordists, based in that area)

https://corwintrails.bandcamp.com/album/selected-field-recordings-from-india-and-nepal-volume-iii-environments (more urban pieces, interspersed with some wild sounds)

What's the basic equipment requirements and cost to get started? I've made digicam videos in the dark or on a tripod just to get the sound, but the sound quality with the internal mic understandably sucks, even with my DSLR
>>
>>757496
I'm going to read those links and maybe post tomorrow. I'm interested because I hike and climb alone, and everytime I hear awesome birds and creatures at night. It's a shame I can't share it with anyone else.

Btw, any tips on a really ul starter (even diy) equipement? I keep records in muh journals and drawings, but it could be nice if I could make some sort of decent recordings.

Noice thread btw OP

Excellent idea OP, freddiemercury.png!

i have a ~$40 sony voice recorder that ive used a few times. it has a stereo mic input, and id like to diy a parabolic dish mic since i have access to appropriate tech

I'm extremely tasty to mosquitos so even just stepping outside to mow the grass means I must douse my skin with DEET or suffer terrible consequences. Trouble is I despise the smell and feel of DEET on my skin and it melts the synthetic dri fit clothing I prefer when it's hot outside. Which means I use permethrin-based repellent which works, but is expensive. I believe it's expensive because of economies of scale, niche appeal, gullibility of consumers etc.

So I'm looking at commercial insecticides to ward off mosquitos. I can pour some in a little spray bottle, dilute it to taste, mist myself off and hopefully insects will create a wide berth for me. You probably think I'm crazy but here's my logic. Permethrin is also used as an insecticide, though not very common, and is lethally deadly to bugs, but non-toxic through skin contact and only mildly toxic to mammals when ingested. But take Ortho Bug B Gone concentrate. $5 gets me enough product to treat the outside perimeter of an entire house, which means it's enough to last a person years. The active chemical is bifenthrin, which kills anything which more than four legs, is a chemical which works by the same mechanism as permethrin and crucially, like permethrin:
>Skin contact is not toxic, apart from a slight tingling sensation on the specific location of contact. Ingestion is toxic, although only slightly.

What does /out/ think of my plan?

Set up a amazon wish list and someone will buy you a couple cans of permethrin. Also, put condoms on the list. I'll buy those so that you don't reproduce.

Hey /out. Maybe someone here can tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong.

I went out for the first time today with my new fly rod. I had never fly fished before. My only experience was casting in the yard for the last two weeks and watching A River Runs Through It.

I didn't expect to actually catch any fish, but I didn't think this is how it would end up. I list 8 flies, and these two fell apart after all of 20 minutes with each one.

Now, I never snagged once. It was a nice open river I was at. Is it something to do with my casting? Was my knot tied wrong? What's the deal? Visit these both started out as BH Pheasant Tail Nymphs.

How's that even possible? Did you tie the flies yourself?

Hi /out/,
after realising I have no passion in this life apart from motorcycles, I have decided to buy one. My problem is that I will likely get kicked out of my house because my parents don't approve of bikes.
It's either I carry on wanting to fucking off myself or I follow my passion and live in my car along with my bike.
What are some tips for being homeless? I'm in full time education with a job so I can afford to eat and drink at fucking least.
Any tips?

Why not enjoy the free bed and school from your parents my angsty young friend. In a couple years when you grow up and start paying your own bills, you can buy a motorcycle if you still want to.
>>
>>817293
If you are unable to delayed gratification then you will not go far in life anon.
This is what defines a loser.
>>

>live in my car along with my bike.
Umm, how you gonna fit your motorcycle in your car with you? Sell the car, use proceeds to buy some saddlebags and a tent or hammock, along with other camping supplies. Then ride your motorcycle off a cliff into the ocean.

hey guys, I want to ask you about the folding beds, are they a good choice if you plan to stay in one place for a while and won't have to carry them a long way? Are they comfortable without an extra mattress or something?
Also those legs look like they'll fuck up the tent's floor really good.

-depending on the manufacturers, it's comfortable, surprisingly kinda rugged and fairly light. Bonus that you won:t have to sleep on the ground.

Get a coleman cot at least

Yeah those two are definitely my favorite drive-in campgrounds. But this time of year you sometimes have to take what you can get if you haven't reserved ahead of time.
Keep an eye on this before you get there

/bear/ general

So anyone here encounter bears and not kill them?

>Be Canadian, live up north
>be friendly to all bears, black and grizzly
>don't show fear, no breaking eye contact, just remain still and confident
>after they approach they are like dogs and pets, I pet them, even cubs with their mothers, even alpha grizzlies.
>feed them, they chill and sit around, I can be holding food, they approach to take it and I just grunt they go away
>they are very docile

Thinking of making a video though I don't have any good equipment

Wondering if anyone else does this?

Some of that stuff just seems unnecessary or you would probably be better off finding an alternative. In an average first aid kit I tend to consider everything but duct tape and some random antiseptic goo to be surplus because you can always do without the other stuff in a pinch. So while fancy bandages and Woundseal powder are nice you should keep in mind that they're luxuries when considering your storage space and budget. The candles also seem like a waste to me but it's whatever, I prefer an actual flashlight or even a crank flashlight if you're worried about batteries.

I don't know what those Mainstay drinking water things are but they seem super expensive. For less money you can get both a Swayer filter and a bottle of some purification tablets. Now you have two methods of securing clean water instead of whatever that is.

General thread for the discussion of /out/ related ethics/law.

I am lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, as such I would like to avoid damaging it in any way, however I really like bushcraft and such. So my question is, is it unethical to cut down the occasional live tree (assuming u mostly use dead wood) in the wilderness and should one stick to premade modern means such as tents and hammocks? I don't want to be the doosh who goes around pristine hiking tracks lopping down trees but I don't wanna be a namebrand dayhike normie. Feel free to tell me to get over myself and use a tent and cooker like everyone else

There is no such thing on the surface of the earth
That's why you need to stop fucking up the little that is left
> don't want to be the doosh who goes around pristine hiking tracks lopping down trees but I don't wanna be a namebrand dayhike normie
It sounds like you are more concerned with how people perceive you than what you actually do
>>

Here in nz imo there's a number of places pristine in their isolation from man, as for the second part I mean I don't get much enjoyment from just the hiking part of hiking, I enjoy the camping/fishing/hiking experience as a whole, and get more satisfaction from making something than pitching a tent, however I'm perfectly willing to just use a tent should the need be. Also we're not talking a whole unnecessary cabin made of many trees here just a firewall and lean-to or the like. Thanks for the input tho
>>
>>816782
>imo
Your imo is worthless because it is not based on anything quantitative
Were you alive 100 or 200 years ago to see how different it is today? Do you even read what people alive then wrote? Do you even look at the data, or are you just talking out your ass?

There is nothing left on the surface of the earth that is pristine
Even Antarctica is covered in lead pollution

>Also we're not talking a whole unnecessary cabin made of many trees
Everybody thinks their little bit doesn't do any harm. There are over 7 billion every bodies. Is math that hard?

- wore /fa/ Danner boots instead of faggy light hiking shoes
