Anyone here near DC interested in some sort of trip? I tried posting this on /soc/ and I just found like heroin junkies and black people. I'm sort of new to this board but I have been casually hiking since I was a kid, nothing serious.

they just wanted to take my heroin and not actually hike. I guess I wanted to do a weekend trip. I mean if someone wants to do heroin fine but they need to be able to do a day hike, build a fire without falling in it, etc.

I'm posting an update to my corn and true garlic seed projects, and I'm adding in a bit about my NM chile (peppers) and why I want my own seed that is adapted the way it is. I'll start with the chile. Pic related was my chile beds back in the first part of June. The weeds got as bad as they did for two reasons:

Last year, we literally got double the annual average rainfall, which produced a bumper crop of weed seeds for this year and;

This year, my mother had a major surgery, and I had to pick and choose what got taken care of for a while due to having to take care of her. I picked knocking the Bermuda in where the corn is back. More on that later.

Further compounding the issue was the fact that the seedlings took 2-3 weeks to emerge, when they should have taken closer to 1 week. This gave the weeds an extra 2 week head start.

Looked at the catalog, didn't see a thread about NH, so let's start one? Cause I need some help /out/

Where should my gf and I go camping in NH?
We're going tent/car camping for 4 days. I have no clue where to go.

Picking a campground is easy, but is there any non-site trails we can park, hike, find a spot and set up camp? Somewhere we don't have to pay for a spot, where it's legal to just go to and camp out. If that's actually possible in NH, I don't know. That's why I'm asking you guys

What area of NH do you like to be /out/ in?

Also, are there any specific things I should bring, or just the standard camping/hiking stuff?

Sorry if I hijack your thread OP but does anyone know any good places for a scenic hike in the white mountain region, specifically off of the Kancamangus highway? It has to be a hike that can be completed in one day and be back where I started before dark. And I'm not looking for anything where I have to climb cliffs or anything (terrified of heights, okay with climbing mountains as long as there are no shear drops)
I've driven the Kancamangus highway once and it's beautiful but otherwise I'm very unfamiliar with the region so I appreciate any help.

how to improve my skills in knives? I dont want to cut off my finger
30 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
>>813654
What are you wanting to do with your knife?
What kind of knife do you have?
>>
>>813654
THE BASICS OF KNIFE HANDLING:
1. Make sure your knife is sharp. Dull knives can lead the user to use extra pressure and the knife can slip.
2. For starters, start with a decent grade steel. If you get a hard steel it will keep it's edge but be harder to sharpen.
3. Remember to make sure any locking knife is fully locked before use. Never use force on a non-locking folding knife.
4. Always remember where your other hand is, and what is behind what you're cutting! It sounds silly, but you can seriously hurt yourself or destroy things by accident this way.
5. Firmly grip the handle of the knife and shove it into your neck. All the way. Kill yourself.

>>
>>811856
But why?

I carried one of those around fort leanardwood. They aren't light. And they aren't cheap. And a knife can destroy it.

When you are dropping off a team of sappers they make sense. Otherwise why not just buy a canoe?
>>
>>811874
Its more for fishing and island camping and rivers, i don´t carry one around the bush for long distances anyway (you have to carry the battery and motor aswell if) And i always carry a patching kit and ive already used it, takes 30 seconds to patch a hole. And they usually have 3 air sections so the whole boat doesnt go down from one hole.

Also i have a inflatable canoe aswell. I use it for rivers mainly.

Third reason is i don´t have place to keep a "real" canoe or a boat no warehouse or anything. And moving them in your trunk is way easier and during winter i can keep them in my closet for example. Also you dont need to buy a trailer or a roof holder

Im in the market for a new pair of hiking boots or shoes. I previously had Merrill moab ventilators which tore the shit out of my foot on a 50mi backpacking trip. My requirements are that I can backpack with up to 40lbs day after day comfortably. I dont care whether or not it has gortex.

I liked the look of Adidas outdoor line but I tried their swift x shoe at REI today and it didnt feel that great. My budget is $150 or less.

Is this type of saw more backpack friendly?
Are they any good?
40 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
I have a kershaw alaskan blade changer with a very similar saw and it's incredible. Makes it real easy to prune dead trees for firewood without snapping yourself in the face
>>
They're pretty good. I prefer the folding ones because they are more solid. Also wood handles always better.

If you're going on an extended trip might as well pack a larger saw blade and construct a bow or buck saw in the field.
You can carry the saw on the inside of your belt or even coiled inside a cooking pot
>>
Use mine every day at work. Always keep them in my leg pocket and hardly notice it. Love em!
They cut through 3'' branches in 3 seconds.
Unless you're planning to take down an entire tree I don't see a reason to bring a full size saw.

Went out today for a quick hunt. The weather has been very warm and wet and I've been seeing more mushrooms popping up here and there. I had found a good concentration of Cantharellus cinnabarinus last year on a local trail last year so I decided to see if they are coming back.
