Sup /out/!
Figured this topic was better for this board than /k/.
I am on the lookout for a new pair of binoculars.
I figure the 300-400usd limit is where I'd settle.
I don't really mind chromabs, but it would be nice to try something fancy for once too.
Uses will be out and about and also hunting. I would prefer large lenses but it has to be lightweight before that. Zoom seems to be difficult to find but would be nice as well. Weatherproofing isn't a big deal.
From what I've found so far out of 400ish binoculars:
Nikon Aculon T11 8-24x25
Nikon Aculon A211 10-22x50
Helios Powermaster 13-40X80
Vortex Diamondback 8X42
All of these are around the 180usd range and I reckon it's a good range for my needs. But my knowledge of what's "a must" for the higher end is very low. Coatings and glass obviously gets better the higher you go, but there's a point where you pay large sums for minimal improvements.
Does /k/out/ have a list maybe?

Those you mentioned are worthless crap, if you want a good and cheap one, you should look for russian military ones like
http://www.baigish.ru/
Solid quality that does not go blind after a fiew years.
If you want highest quality buy german ones.

What is the slope of a pitchers mound relative to a six foot mound and a little under a six foot pitching stride?

It's about 10 feet in the US, closer to 5 in canada. Hope this helps.
best places to /out/ to AFRICA?
I have a South African friend who says the most divine places he's ever been were Mozambique and Madagascar. Mozambique because it's basically the same but cheaper and no tourists, so it's amazing. He said all they eat is seafood and it's shit that would cost you $100 in a european restaurant but you get for like $5.
South Africa itself is pretty neato. Lots of zoos excursion, camping, and wildlife tourism. Stay away from the dictatorships and various banana republics throughout central africa anon. Once they find-out you're a gay they'll torch you in the streets with a milk carton of petrol

I grew up in northern South Africa and can suggest the "panorama route" in Mpumalanga province.
The town of Graskop is at the south end of it and not hard to get to, and you can hike from there all that way to Kruger park if you want. Gods Window is a sight, and there is tons of shit in the Blyde river canyon to do/see.
>>819202
Second for panorama route, Graskop, and Blyde River. They were pretty awesome.
>>819165
Mozambique was great too. We spent a few days in Tofo and loved it.
Swaziland is also really nice. I spent most of three months out in the bush there and had an awesome time.
What's the largest backpack that you've been able to carry onto a plane?
Any tips to avoid issues at the counter?
I hate checking bags. Esp in 3r world countries I don't trust the baggage handlers or the airlines.
I have this Lowe Alpine Contour 90+15 (pic right) that I would like to take on my next trip but I'm afraid it's too big. I could probably make it small enough, but I'm afraid the big straps and waistband are gonna get in the way.
any thoughts?
I've taken the fake northface (far left) on many flights, super stuffed with no problems. It's a pain in the ass for security but carries alot
The Lowe is probably just too big though... so I might have to take the vintage Mountain Equipment bag (pic middle). It looks awesome, but it has serious drawbacks like comfort and probably breaking any moment
If it's just travel and not innawoods/gear hauling stuff I use an Osprey Porter 46. It's designed specifically to fit in an overhead compartment and all the straps zip away. I've traveled for a couple months at a time with it.

Took a fully loaded 40L pack with a 5L additional pouch. No one batted an eyelid.
Anyone know if wiping myself with these would repel mosquitoes?
Composition: Propan-2-ol 70%v/v, n-Alkyl dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride 0.25%w/w, n-Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride 0.25%w/w
>>819050
no
>>819050
no, we use a similar towel like that when cleaning up the inside of ambulances and are told to wear gloves while doing it considering its 95% carcinogens
>>819156
Maybe he's playing the long game and planning to kill the mosquitoes with cancer.
I'm going hiking in the Rockies in a few weeks. What's the best semiauto handgun for defense against animals innawoods? Excepting bears, because bear defense threads always result in shitposting.
10mm. And that's not bear poop it's Vole poop
>>818999
Handguns are for negroes to rob liquor-stores, they donĀ“t belong innawoods. Take a shotgun ore any rifle in a decent calibre for hunting or defense against predators.
Just curious, any of you westies ever came across something like that?
It's really great, my dad used it, I use it, allthough I usually prefer Esbit now, much lighter than Prymus, (though much less effective.)
https://youtu.be/nOgOEJbR2zA
It looks like a strampunk suicide vest.
>>818830
It's a bit teicky to start, but it's perfectly safe.
Friends had one. It exploded on a 14 day hike.
Just made a nifty little fire starting kit out of a few old lead containers, a bulky match box, and some gauze. Two fit perfectly into my survival knife. Any ideas to improve them?
No lighter?
>>818676
...Just put storm sticks into waterproof case. There is always something to kindle in the woods. If there isn't, it's probably somewhere you have to use trangia anyway.
>>818687
I like to make everything as light as possible and disposable. Also I like a challenge.
What does /out/ think about lifting the mountain bike ban in wilderness? The proposed act would also allow trail crews to use chainsaws and wheel barrows in their trail maintenance work.
http://www.bicycleretailer.com/north-america/2016/07/18/utahs-senators-introduce-bill-would-make-it-easier-mountain-bike
>>818513
fuck them
they are hard on the trails and dangerous to hikers
the only thing worse is mule trains
I don't trust the senators sponsoring the bills but mountain bikers are the least impactful on the environment and the most dedicated to trail maintenance so as long as there isn't any pork barrelling I'm for it.
Seems to me that a bunch of mountain bikers with chainsaws kind of runs counter to the whole idea of "wilderness".
Do you guys know of any adventurous outdoor jobs, with a bit of danger? Like being a guide in Africa, or something across those lines.
>Bonus points if exotic
I am an "Outdoor Leadership Experience Instructor"
basically i lead and supervise youth at risk/in conflict with the law for week long trips in Algonquin park and area.
Not super exotic, or super dangerous but there is a bit of risk involved.
>>818353
Search and rescue, forest ranger, fire fighter, hunters that get paid to kill boar etc
>>818353
>with a bit of danger
Yeah Africa really isn't gonna be your best bet in this regard, even if it's a country like SA.
Where I live we can harvest Dundeness Crab by going out at low tide, I don't have a boat and am not going to use any crab nets or traps. So at low tide I walked the beach and saw nothing. I was talking to the person who said to do it and he said "they are beneath the sand and you need a crab rake". Has anyone ever done this? What do you look for? I can't even find any videos on it they are all about using crab rings. Do they make air holes or something? I only saw dead ones.
>>818289
Never heard of crab raking. Clam raking, yes. Clams live in the sand and make air holes and you can rake them up in silty sand. But crabs wander in and out with the tides. To catch Dungeness crab by hand, you have to wade in shallow water and grab them. It helps if you have a little mesh box with chicken gizzards in it. You can anchor it to the ground in shallow water and crabs will congregate.
>>818289
>crab rake
I had never heard of such a thing, but shit, its an actual thing. Looks like you actually have to be in the water though. Wish I would have known about this when I lived in California. Them Dungeness are tasty aren't they?

This plant just started growing near my house, and im not too sure what it is, can someone help me identify it?
Sorry about the rotated pic
>>818258
yucca plant with seed pods, some parts are edible and you can use them to make cordage
>>818264
Thanks!
What is wrong with this plant?
>>818176
>What is wrong with this plant?
the leaves are drying up
>>818180
Nothing to worry about?
It was very hot and sunny the last couple of days, but I thought it could be a disease or a fungus.
>>818176
Acer's are prone to wind burn on their leaves, first water it well and secondly move it to a more sheltered location where it won't get so much wind directly on it, once it matures a little then it can be moved to a more open location, alternatively you could try putting something next to it to block the prevailing wind a little.
Hey /out/ what (bug?) Is this?. Saw it while mowing, sorry if this is wrong board for a question like this
cicada shell

Oh aiight, thanks m80. I was wondering why it looked hollow

So tell me /out/, what's the advantage of these egg carton mattresses compared to my nice foam roll mat?
>>818115
I've didn't even know they existed
have you used on then OP?
>>818119
Nope I just use a soft blue mat like this one
Went on a little snip of the PCT last month and I noticed that a lot of people had the eggy square mattresses on their packs
>>818115
>multitasking
when folded you can sit on it like a small stool.
a slip on fabric thing converts mine into a camp chair.
you can use them for a wind block.
blue mats stay curled up foldups dont
you can shower on the foldouts
the foldouts are warmer to sleep on.
foldouts have more loft = cushion
