hey /out/

My girlfriend and I were walking the dog on some trails and we found a lot of these berries growing.

Are they safe to eat? was hoping to make some jam with them.

They are blackberries. Delicious.
>>
>>811381
How could you not know about blackberries being edible? Am I being baited?
>>
Red and green ones aren't ripe

Second one concerns me. Sort of looked like dull blueberry. We have blue berries where I live so these definitely weren't them

Might be a different variety mate, if I'm honest that's not the best pic but I've eaten blueberries that look like that before, grown on my allotment, they were good. I'd eat half of one to taste/wait and see if adverse effects before you eat the whole lot though.

Blackberries mate, make sure to only get the properly black/purple ones, the ones with any red still on them are sour as fuck.

OK mate, I'll let you into what I do with the jam, you can make an amazing crostata with it. Here's a recipe:

Zest then juice a lemon. Reserve the juice, keep it separate from the zest. Heat your oven to 180 celsius.

Beat together 100g soft unsalted butter and 150g caster sugar. Add 2 medium eggs, one at a time, keep beating. Beat in the zest of the lemon. The result should be thick but smooth.

Sift together 150g plain flour and 1 tsp baking powder, then mix in 50g of almond meal/ground almonds. Add a pinch of salt. Fold this into the butter/egg/sugar mix. The batter should be pretty thick, having to scrape it out is normal. If it's obscenely solid, add a bit of the lemon juice but you really shouldn't have to.

Grease a tart/cake tin (25cm is normal?) then pour the batter in and level it out. Shallow out the most perfect circle you can in the middle with about 2,5 cm uncovered batter at the edge of the tin. Spread 250-300g of the jam as evenly as you can into this hollow.

Bake for 30 minutes, check it at 25, it might take 35.

This shit is amazing OP, you and your GF will love it.

If you're gonna make jam pick a fuck ton of them. Have you ever made jam before? I mean go for it if you want, but I would like push them through a fine mesh colander to get the seeds out and then whip some cream into it and dump it on a slice of pound cake or french vanilla ice cream

over all it'll be less work, mess, and its summer so go eat some tasty ice cream.

you can also freeze them and save them for this winter when you want a little taste of summertime.

How many do you think are on the bush? It it a whole mess of them?

OP here, many berries were to be had. We found plenty and have enough for each of us to make at least a jar or more of jelly a piece.

I will be making oranges and blackberry jam, and a standard blackberry jam. My girlfriend will be making blackberry peach and blackberry kiwi

I will post more pictures unless this is too /ck/

My first thought when you mentioned blueberries was https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_(genus), which you most certainly don't want to eat.
But this does not really look like it, so no idea. Sorry.

Looks like a type of Rubus pubescens or Rubus chamaemorus, probably the latter.

>>811464
Not blueberry at all. Need better photos of the leaves and the way the berries are attached.

>>811591
Streptopus lanceolatus and has poisonous berries.

>>811618
Yeah, not blueberries. Ribes bracteosum (Stink Currant) most likely.

>>811677
You could have at least renamed the file first.

Should be some European thing like a rental place you grow gardens and such.

So by the end of it we made seven cans of jam.
We just followed the basic youtube videos we found of the subject of making blackberry jam and winged it, and it was good. all the extra fruit additions went well it seems. Haven't tried much of them aside from during cooking but am confident they will be delicious.

That sort of looks like the leaves of the Concord grape vine I have, and the "berries" sort of look like the grapes.

But the way it looks all laid out doesn't look like grapes or any sort of vine.

Should probably just eat em, man.
>>
>>812049
>Yeah, not blueberries. Ribes bracteosum (Stink Currant) most likely.
That's it. I checked and it says that it is edible but not good. Thanks!!
>>
>>812049
>Streptopus lanceolatus and has poisonous berries.

It's Streptopus amplexifolius. They are edible but in excess can cause diarrhea. I ate some today and they do taste like watermelon but not the plant, they taste like a mild Jolly Rancher candy.
>>
>>812421
The only difference seems to be slightly elongated berries for the Streptopus amplexifolius and round for the Streptopus lanceolatus. Both have slight toxins and both give you the shits if you eat too much. Both taste the same, fyi.

>>
>>812450
>Someone said it was poisonous

Because they are poisonous, well, "toxic" to be exact. Eating them can harm your health. Don't eat them.

>>812451
Low bush blueberries have better antioxidants than high bush blueberries (the kind in the store).

Hey /out/

My dog and i were walking the girlfriend and we founf a lot of this plant growing.

Are they safe to eat? was hoping to make some blunt with them.
>>
>>812455
>Because they are poisonous
Nothing I'm seeing says they are poisonous, just the seeds have a laxative effect.
>>
>>811464
Are those huckleberries?
>>
>>812460
That is the toxin though. If you need a laxative, there are far more gentle ones you can eat from the wild. If you do so, do it while you are at home so that you can deal with any surprises more effectively.

The main concern is eating things like that on long hikes, extended camping trips, or during survival situations. 1 day of diarrhea can turn your entire trip into a survival situation due to a number of factors. Often times, people don't factor 1-3 days of the shits into their trip planning and it ends up cutting their trip short due to using up more supplies than they anticipated. Then again, people who eat that sort of thing are probably not very good planners in the first place. Things can be even worse if you are already in a survival situation and eat something like that where it can cause a downward spiral which can ultimately lead to death.

I'm not saying you are that type of person, I'm just stating something that should be firsthand knowledge, just like not touching poison ivy should be firsthand knowledge.
>>
>>811677
Are those really psychedelic?
>>
>>812610
Only mildly so, but yes. the amount you have to eat to get results happens to be about the amount you need to eat to be seriously poisoned by them. This is compounded by the fact that the time of year they are harvested affects the amount of toxins they contain. Which can be up to 10 times more concentrated than normal.
>>
>>812671
it's not hard to prepare them.
>>
>>811381
Hope your trolling, those are obviously blackberries.
