Me and a friend are planning a trip next month to Colorado for 3 nights of camping. This will be both of our first times in the state and theres so many places to choose from neither of us is too sure. We will most likely not want to stay in the same place the entire trip, so if theres a couple parks within a reasonable distance between each other that would be perfect. Was hoping to get some feedback/suggestions on where the best spots might be. Any personal experiences?

If you're going to be ANYWHERE west of I-25, be prepared for near or slightly under freezing weather. It will be at absolute best 50 degrees at night, most likely well under 45. If you're going to be above 8000 feet in the mountains, prepare for 20 degree weather or worse at nights. During the day you'll be fine but temps drop like a rock when the sun goes down. Me and my brother went camping about two months ago, we weren't even that high up and we were chilly in 5 degree bags with decent pads and tent.
We have bears, pack and handle your food accordingly. If you're hiking and came from <1500 feet altitude, make sure you have at least a full liter of water per person on you. Water can be hard to find depending on where you are and you'll be sweating a lot even if you don't realize it. I worked at a scout camp a few years back and the troops from sea level, high humidity areas would drop like flies because they weren't used to the dry climate sucking away their sweat so fast and they wouldn't drink.
Please don't cut live wood for fuel, standing dead is fine. Please don't leave your trash sitting around after you leave.
>we want to camp east of I-25
Fucking why, you come to Colorado for the mountains not the dust bowl.
All of the "parks" in Colorado for the most part are on the eastern half of the state and cost money to camp at. The mountains are all National forest unless it's private land which is usually well marked. I would greatly recommend going to the mountains instead.
Clear Creek Reservoir south of Leadville is a nice place to camp. If you're into scenic routes (Assuming you're starting in CO Springs) Head west on Route 24 from Springs to Clear Creek. On the return trip, leave Clear Creek heading south on Route 285 and then East into Salida. From there follow Highway 50 back to Canon City and then go wherever you want. Do not fucking speed on that section of Highway 50, you'll know where I mean if you look. Just don't if you value your life.
If you're willing to travel a bit west you should check out Gunnison Canyon. There is a nice overnight camping spot at the bottom of a trail called SOB Draw that will be super fun.

Im assuming bear spray is a must then?
We'll be starting out in denver actually. Planning to wake up early in the morning then driving out wherever we can (trying to stay somewhat close to denver if possible). You think it'll get that cold at night in the middle of august?
Definitely wont be east of i-25 lol. We want to hit up as many hiking trails as we can as well; for the most part everything we're looking up is on the west coast anyways.
>>819468
Thats way too far out west for us lol. Trying to stay closer to denver if possible. Thanks though
When do you call off going out on account of heat?
Supposed to hit at least the mid 90s pretty soon with heat indexes near or over 100.
inb4 more idiots die or have to be rescued because they went out during excessive heat warnings without sufficient water and or having preexisting health issues
I'm no expert on desert hiking but if the heat is so great that you get dehydrated no matter how much water you have, maybe you're in the kind of situation where you rest by day and travel by night.
Sunstroke is an underrated danger in my opinion.

Are you in Minnesota?

Its fucked here in Nebraska right now and im homeless. Been hanging out at the river and trying (failing) to not move around much during the day.

Hey, /out/. I don't know if this is the proper board to ask, but I have a very annoying problem. It's getting rather cold where I live and my feet sweat easily. It's not usually a problem but recently it has gotten very cold and I have experienced negative temperatures (on a Celcius scale). This is in and of itself bad, but my feet get the worst part of it:
>they get cold
>I put an extra pair of socks
>they sweat
>the sweat cools down
>I feel cold again (and wet)
All my socks are 80%+ cotton made. Is that a problem? What to do?
TIA
Use wool. Cotton has its places, but socks is not one of them.
>>818918
if it's super bad, wear dry wicking socks made from polyesther (expensiv!) under a pair of wool socks. Yes even in sommer, wear the big ones, they will isolate you from the heat outside. Switch socks during lunch.
You need new feet
I caught 4 Brown recluses by my bed. They try to eat each other and get caught in the sticky trap. Fuddruckers by my bed though. Fuck tennessee

I wanna build myself a nice little timber frame on the land I'm buying. Nothing crazy, just a little homestead to hermit in for a few year maybe. Hoping for something fairly small. Anyone have experience? I know plenty of people with proper mills and shit who can help but I won't talk to them for several weeks. But keep having timber frame wet dreams...

>>818247
When you say timber frame do you mean
>a house built with dimensional lumber (most houses, including the one in your pic, which looks like its frame is mostly 6x6s, but also the way its walls are constructed is strange cause it looks like its walls would be left open like in a stable but there are floor joists in the pic so idk)
>a house built with dimensional lumber hewn from trees cut on the property (much more expensive and time consuming, have to wait a year minimum after cutting to mill unless you pay to kiln dry which for you to do your own wood and get that back is very expensive, not much difference in finished product from first option)
>a log cabin
>a house built from trees cut on the proper and seasoned but not hewn except at joints, like that fancy hotel at Yellowstone (huge pain in the ass, impossible unless you or someone helping you knows what they are doing, lots of labor, cheaper materials than first two options)
>something else
?
What did you envision using for roof exterior and exterior cladding? What did you envision for foundation? What climate is this gonna be in?
>>818659
Minnesota and I don't know. Really whatever ends up being the most cost effective for something I'm going to live in for a few years while I save up to further build. Lumber from the property is unlikely, the trees I've seen on it so far are all smaller birch and pine. Nothing large enough for the most part.
Pic was just something I had on hand, not what I'd envisioned for the most part.

Post you're tackle bags! Still using an old school tackle box? It might be time for a change. It is 2011+5 after all. Backpacks with flat Plano boxes are also acceptable.
Pastebin and Imgur are still up (now including the San Diego Jam Knot)

I remember reading the Maine law on it, and I think common split shots were one of the worst for the birds so you have to buy steel ones.
And some places they aren't banned from the whole state but certain bodies of water ban them. Dumbass loons.
Does anyone use fishingreminder?
I honestly feel discouraged to go out and fish when it reads 'poor day'.
>>818012
Nah. I downloaded some apps like that but never really used them. I guess it could encourage to get out on a good day when I am feeling lazy. But I wouldn't want it to discourage me on a poor day.
What is your idea of an ideal build for an adventure/bikepacking bike in the following categories?
Steel or aluminum frame?
Derailleurs or Rohloff/Alfine gearhub?
(If derailleur, Shimano or SRAM?)
Clipless or platform pedals?
26", 27.5", 29", or fatbike?
Suspension fork or rigid?
Best handlebar setup?

Mostly just bmx. But aren't those the pedals you need the shoes that lock in? If that's the case, I heard they are very unforgiving. I always see MTB dudes riding BMX platform pedals.

Really close to buying a Golf R
AWD, 30mpg, 4 doors, and looks great with a roof rack and bike carrier. It's the perfect all-in-one for me, with some minor modifications necessary to mount the bike hitch rack
What do you think, /out/? Not an overland vehicle by any means, but more than enough for gravel, ice, snow, and steep roads

What's in your first aid kit?
aids. the first one.
A bandage, vacuum sealed (some sort of combat version, got used to it in the army so i bought 2 of the same for /out/) and a tourniquet (same here, got some training on it in the army).
Other than that, some meds and such (pain depressants, anti inflamatory, some saline, desinfectant etc), band-aids, sports tape and a few other bits and bobs.
Im hesitant to use things I havn't had any training/instruction on how to use, so for trauma or catastrophic hemorrhage I only use things Ive had training in using.

>>813913
Totally agree. Thats why in the USA it is free to camp in national forests or BLM land.
I have paid to camp in some state and National parks but that fee included use of the park facilities like toilets and showers. Most campsites also have a picnic table and built in grill. That shit and its upkeep aint free, hence the fee

well a hatchet would be far better to have, in case of zombies you know
Alcohole, Esib, Butane or wood stoves?
Which is best?
What do you use and why?
esbit* sorry
I have a pocket rocket that uses isobutane. Works very well to heat water to boiling. You can cook other things on it as well but it tends to make a hot spot in the bottom of the pot. It's certainly not as even as cooking on a wood fire, but it's incredibly convenient. My biggest gripe with it is having to rely on those fuel cans. They're not quite as easy to find as those green propane cans.
But I have one of those "wood gas" stoves than can use wood or alcohol as a backup.
Esbit
Don't know if best, but that's what I use due to what the shop had at the time. I stuck with it.
It works, and it's easy.
