hey bois

thanks

Yeah, ausfag

I always recommend whatever the entry level hunting Samick recurve is at the time; I think it's SAGE nowadays (was Talon a little bit back)

50 pound is fine for a noob

I like Eastern Legacy aluminum shafts; you generally want to go heavy with shaft and broadhead against pigs; Cedar shafts work too

Practice a lot before taking to the field. Whatever range you can hit a paper party plate with certainty is your hunting range.

Sights.... If you want. I don't like 'em. I just shoot of the plastic tab rest.

Should be able to get a Sage for around $200

Some bowstring wax

A finger tab (don't really need a arm guard unless you're shooting like a target fag)

You didn't mention what bow type. I reckon a recurve is good enough, but you know.

I live in Wyoming where most of the time the mountains get fucking cold at night. Every backpacking setup I've used is either way too heavy or not warm enough. So here's my question: How do you stay warm on cold nights without carrying half your body weight in gear? Or do I just need to man up and enjoy the suffering?
29 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
OK, so if you are cold at night then an old trick is to go take a piss. Simple, but it works because your body no longer has to keep all that liquid at body temperature any more. Another simple yet effective trick is to heat some water on the stove and fill a water bottle with it, then just tuck that fucker in your sleeping bag with you.
I think you know where I am going with this, but it's obvious that you can kill two birds with one stone and just start sleeping with your piss bottles. Make a lot of them. Drink a few forties of shitty beer if you have to, hell you could even reuse the the glass to make your life saving piss jugs and the best part is you never have to leave your sleeping bag!
>>

Slept out in -40 below its called a fire and a sleeping bag thats rated to -50-60. that all I use plus a reflector and a tent but thats tis.

Did I overcook my steak?
Does a steak have to be bloody to be considered perfectly cooked?
The steak was room temp when it went on the grill. would keeping the steak in the fridge cold until putting onto the grill make it stay bloody in the middle?

trying to get it right for the summer...
thanks

General Optics thread...

Everytime there is a binocular/telescope/spotting scope/monocular thread there is only 10 posts before the thread dies because the thread is too specific. I like optics and would like to see a thread that lasts a bit longer. After all, a big part of going /out/ is observing and optics only make this better.

I use a Vortex Raptor 8.5x32 which i think is very good all-rounder. I use it for stargazing, watching birds and other wildlife, checking land marks, and finding routes above treeline. I'ts not too heavy although a bit bulky but for the price i don't think it was a good buy. I don't have much to compare it with because before that i used a very cheap 10x50.

Once i looked through this binocular and compared it with my vortex and the view was a bit better. I was on holidays and didn't write the brand name down thinking i would remember or find it on google but after searching for an hour i gave up. I think it was a 8X30. Anyone recognize this model or brand?

Celestron 15x70mm.

Took some recollumating, but decent for low tier.

Old tent general is dead. Post questions about tents here.

I'll be backpacking europe next week and this is the cheap tent I'll like to buy just in case I don't find the place to sleep+slepeing bag (pic related. What do you think?

Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUHMme6Yv9w

Is this too heavy?

Is a tent or a hammock better? I don't want a bear walking up when i'm in a hammock and fucking my shit up but I guess he could do the same in a tent if he wanted. Plus hammocks would be lighter. All in all when I start camping it would be a weekend thing like Sat & Sun.
>>
>>812133
Bad brand my friend. I bought my first tent off this crowd and it was utter crap. If you are going for a single tent get a decent tunnel tent. They are lighter and take up less space. If you can afford to backpack across europe, you can afford a decent tent.

Somebody gave me a Vietnam era US Army shelter half. It seems like nothing more than a piece of heavy cotton.

Aren't these things supposed to be waterproof?

I'd like to use it for overnights and such but it rains a lot in my area.

Thanks

If it was treated with waterproofing then it would be suitable, although quite heavy.
>>
It is waxed cotton otherwise known as waxed canvas. It's fire retardant so you can have a fire decently close, but still use your brain /b/ro
>>
>>812097
Its duck canvas. And if it doesnt smell like utter ass any more. It needs to be rewaxed.

Do any of you use this? Are there any other pots it fits in nicely other than the one that solostove offers? Also, general opinions welcome. Looking to get this as another cooking option to save on fuel when I can.

I don't kbow what tht is but it looks like I bio fuel stove.

No, I would never purchase a bio feul stove. Why should I pay for technology my ancestors perfected 200000 years ago? Sticks burn good good.

There are far lighter isobutane stoves that will not have you scubbing soot every night.
>>
It's cheaper and more effective to just cook over burning dollar bills
>>
>>811859
Just use some old discarded cans and make your own. You can make any design you want then and all it costs is a little time.

Heard tree knocking in the mountains of western Maine once.
>>
>>810911

One time me and my boyfriends were camping. Right after we had buttsex with each other one of my lovers shot a weapon. Right after that we heard this crashing though the trees and we could tell that something was walking around right outside our campsite. The old timers mentioned to use about caves in these mountains and we're pretty sure it was aliens, because why else would anything natural be out there? This is a forest for crying out loud, everyone knows only supernatural things exist out there. That night we all huddled back in our tents and had scared buttsex until the morning.

>tfw made it to the weekend
I was pretty sure I would die of heat stroke before getting here. Taking Monday off so I have a 3-day weekend, but I'm going to have to get some 6am sessions in with this heat. At least it's starting to get dark earlier so I don't have to wait around quite as long for the largemouth to start biting.

Anyone on /out/ into trail running? I want to do a half marathon trail run in January. How many miles are you running currently and what type of gear set up do you have for longer runs?
10 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Used to, taking some time off
Was racing the Xterra tri series and a handful of trail ultras
Gear: shoes, split Vs
Long distance: Montrail Mountain Masochist for bad weather/tough courses, Rogue Racer for good conditions.
Medium distance: Salomon S Lab Sense
For 15 mi+ training runs I carried a 24 oz bottle with gels taped to it or stashed a bottle on a previous shorter run to grab later

Please don't have poles, hydration vests, or any of that garbage if you are racing for less than 100 miles
>>
>>810677
I'm currently running in Salmon Scream 3d's. I was thinking of getting a handheld water bottle kit with a pouch for gu or a fanny. I'm running a 4.5 mile rout 5 times a week right now, but I want to start upping my mileage while avoiding injury.
>>
8-10 miles takes me roughly 45 minutes to an hour in the forests a county over from me

I just drink water and maybe a preworkout and I eat afterwards, if I run over 10 miles I'd bring some poptarts or protein bars along with extra water and some caffeine tabs.

To train for a half marathon trail run you definately need to do some high intensity sprints up the hardest hills you can find, and jog for about 6 miles through the woods every other day. A month before the race turn up the heat and run your hardest for 8 miles and then add 2 miles every other day until you are doing 14. Do 14 every other day until a week before race day, that week drop your running to 3 miles every other day until you race.

Thread link didn't work. The thread is on r9k with the same image. I carry around the sticks and hammer and shit, I write what measurement he says on the lathe and hammer it into the ground. It's a lot of walking and the weight gets more cumbersome throughout the day
>>
40km isnt even much you can literally walk that in 5-6 hours

Shouldnt you be working 12 hour shifts with that work? So you spend 40-50% of your time walking.

Sounds like those fat fucks at walmart walk more than you.

this is called a "tent". it's marketed pretty much solely to hipsters who have to be different. instead of sleeping comfortably above the ground in your hammock you actually put it right on the dirt and sleep on the ground kek.
