Alright /k/, in the interests of expanding our galactic empire in the Gregorian Calendar year 8798; you have been entrusted with the position of Armchair Strategist, and must come up with a plan to take over an alien planet:

Target and Travel
[1] The planet in question is Kepler-452b, 1400 light years away
[2] We can travel at 90% c
[3] Early recon probe arrived and discovered the aliens at roughly the equivalent of the late bronze age
[4] This AI probe had no weapons, only genetic manipulation tools and the capacity for memetic warfare, you get to decide what it did while waiting
[5] Because space travel is fucking expensive and difficult, we only managed to send one large warship with 10,000 personnel; it is self-sufficient
[6] Our warship will arrive when the aliens are at a late 1800's - early 1900's era; WWI tech-base equivalent

Goals
[7] We want the biosphere intact and the planet left habitable, mass destruction is VERBOTEN
[8] The planet must become human property by whatever means possible; aliens dead and gone preferable

Additional
[9] They are a war-like race, and their population is estimated to measure in the billions by the time we arrive, they won't balk at a fight
[10] We have hundreds of years, maybe even a thousand, to accomplish our goals before they become advanced enough to easily defeat our warship
[11] Our technology is roughly equivalent to a transhumanist society - what is depicted in Eclipse Phase is a rough idea - mind-machine transfer, advanced robotics, AI, genetic manipulation, etc.

Failure modes
[12] You or they fuck up the biosphere and/or significant amounts of biodiversity. Be careful if you use targeted bioweapons or other WMD's.
[13] The aliens become aware of our intentions and fuck our shit up - you're cut off without reinforcement against a technologically inferior but numerically superior force, you won't win a slugfest.
[14] They advance too far in technology (AI sentience and interstellar travel)

Good luck commanders.

>only genetic manipulation tools
Engineer a virus that only targets the aliens, mop up the survivors conventionally.
>>
>>31015039
1% survival rate (already extremely unlikely amount) of just 1 billion original population would still be 10 million aliens vs 10,000 transhumans. That's assuming they don't even try to limit the scope of the damage.

Suppose it's something more realistic like 12% survival rate and infects 70% of say, 3 billion population. That leaves you with ~1.2 billion to deal with still.

Don't think that's anywhere close to a winnable fight without nukes etc. on top of things, and those aren't allowed

Maybe a genetic kill-switch would be better - but then you'd need to somehow get that kill switch into the population DNA, and then propogate it through a majority of the population before triggering it, and the longer it takes, the more likely it is that mutations deactivate the kill switch or otherwise make it useless.

Hell, a few hundred years of development and they'd be examining their own DNA and making changes to it.

I don't think bioweapons would be effective at killing more than 70% of the population even in the best case scenarios. According to OP they should already have rudimentary vaccination programs.

Give every alien severe asbergers and make it generationally passable, wait.

Acogs, are they worth it? Should I buy one, or would I be better off spending my money on another optic? I have a budget of around $1,500, maybe a little more for the right glass.

Only used them in the military on a fixed stock most of the time. In afghan I just walked around with the carry handle iron sights less weight less shit to lose don't have to worry about dirty glass thus easier. From my very limited use of the acog I personally would not buy at full price. What picture is that of? LA riot?

Yup, LA riots, and I plan in looking around for a decent private sale.

Howdy /k/ommandos.

This is the first edition of the recurring Boo/k/lub Thread. You are encouraged to recommend books for us to read. You are obliged to leave a brief and informative synopsis. You are invited to leave a personal review and a DEFKON rating (5: i hated this piece of shit - 1: buy this book immediately or i will murder your family).

All recommendations are accepted, but the topics should relate to weapons, warfare, the theories behind warfare, the technical understanding of weapons, tactics, and warfare, and of course instruction manuals. As such, Fiction, Non-Fiction, White Papers, Gray Papers, and homebrew thesis papers are all acceptable. Please leave a link to the source material, or an explanation for the lack of one (out of print, paywall blocked, verboten, etc.)

All entries will be saved and popular entries will be listed in later editions. You are encouraged to keep your own list as well.

If you are opposed to book learnin' or just generally avoid academia, i feel bad for you. Please do not spam hatred.

Shield and Sword: The United States Navy and the Persian Gulf War by Edward J. Marolda and Robert J. Schneller Jr. 1998

This book is a detailed recounting of the U.S. Navy's role in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, one of the most successful campaigns in American military history.

If you have ever wondered how the U.S. actually projects power globally, this is a book you will enjoy. With detailed descriptions of assets used, logistical methods employed, mistakes and successes in methodology and implementation, S&S is a dense compendium of maps, lists, and illustrations. Rife with pictures and dense recounts, this tome has much useful information for military analysts, aspiring and active servicemen, and armchair generals alike.

DEFKON RATING: 2

Killing Monsters

Pretty niche, but anyone with /k/ids might want to have a look. It's basically about how pretend violence is good for developing minds, it's cross-cultural, empowering, and all that good shit that kids need to grow up confident and self-assured.

DEFKON RATING: 3 (take it or leave it unless you have a kid or are sick of "he's not allowed to have toy guns!" in which case it's a 2)

The guy who's based of the main character wasn't even a hero, he was a Navy man that joined the Sniper school, he DID have a one day battle with a German soldier, a GERMAN SOLDIER, not a major or anything.
>>
>>31014479
If I was making a movie about a legendary and historical battle I would try to be in at least the 97% historical accuracy range.

Well, based on that picture, each cylinder on that drum would need its own barrel, and the "bolt" air chamber thingy would be the firing pin. Not that complicated really.

>>31014133
Memes like Kimber. Buy a RIA it can do anything an Expensive 1911 can and you wont feel bad running it through its paces. Ive got 5k rounds through mine and ive only replaced the recoil springs.
>>
>>31014284
I was surprised the other day at how affordable a Kimber could actually be. Two tone full size for $740. I'm not completely disagreeing, I'm just saying it's not out of reach.
>>
Remmington R1 is probably the best base model 1911 without getting any extra bells and whistles on. Solid fit and finish for a reasonable price.

Been doing some research over the past few days into a CCW. Pretty sure I've decided on the M&P Shield 9mm. I'd like to carry two of its 8-round extended grip mags, one in the gun, one in the holster.

My questions is this: Is there a comfortable CC Holster made for the 5 o'clock position that also has a slot for an extra magazine, or do I just need to get a small separate magazine holster?

I'm also curious about your experiences with extra magazine holsters. A lot of people have said they were uncomfortable, the magazine was rotating/poking them, etc.

Thanks for the help, /k/!

Hey /k/
Just curious if anyone else here has had the chance to fire the Chiappa Rhino and what your take on it is? I got the chance two years ago and ended up purchasing my own, by far my favorite revolver.

Love mine. Joy to shoot, looks like space magic, and muh recoil.

That said if you don't get the 50 or 60ds you're doing it wrong.
>>
>>31014012
Amen. I got the 60DS myself as shown in the OP. I couldn't believe how easy this firearm is to use. The 158 grain .357 rounds have almost no kick. Is it just me or is it very easy to get acclimated to? Within 100 rounds I was shooting accurately at 50 yards.

They are interesting as a curiosity but too impractical to be worthwhile.

Only to buy for collecting because it would likely end up a relic like the gyro jet.

Rocket propelled bullets just don't get enough bazonga generated to do much compared to regular smokeless cartridges.
