This is the contained playpen for black powder fags.
.50 cal edition!
Pistols, rifles, cockrings.
If it shoots a big round and uses black powder, post 'em!

Haha that would be funny at a bank, just come in with your BP revolver and be all like GIB ME MONIES and then shoot the caps in that air but then show everyone the toy caps and you'll all have a good laugh. Good times

Using a cap and ball gun as a cap gun. I like it!
>>
>>31014034
They function best with finer powders. I have a 80/20 chance to fire with 2F, but 3F fires nearly 100% if you ensure the nipple holes are clean. I feel these caps are more weatherproof than metal caps due to the tight plastic seal. They are noticably weaker and you do have to pick the paper residue from the nipple holes out after each firing iteration. You also have to pick off the remains of the plastic cap afterwards.
>>
>>31014049
Got em for a steal. $150 each i think.

>>31014041
Muzzleloaders are exempt from NFA bruh. Which is why I am building a muzzleloading recoilless cannon that shoots 1.4lb, 2in cannonballs with a counterweight of chromite sand that blasts out the back. Muahahaha

Howdy /k/ow boyz, I recently noticed some very light rust pitting on the frame of my 1858 Pietta, black steel finish.

Now I usually
> clean every part thoroughly with soapy wtaer
> rinse
> dry,
> soak in wd-40 to get all the water out
> dry again (dolan stahp)
> lube moving parts with lithium grease.

What am i doing wrong? No pic, shitty phone
>>
>>31014236

Forgot to mention, I store it in its plastic case, in a relatively dry environement;

I've been idly saving my meager student earnings all year so far for a solid BP sidearm.

Do any of you more seasoned shooters know where to find the North American Arms cap and ball Companion on the cheap? I'm not shoveling out more than 250 for a derringer. Not worth it at all without the conversion cylinder.
>>
>>31013917

10/10 would buss the blunder when there be booty to plunder

Really though, if I could find a barrel at a reasonable rate, I'd set the months of my life aside carving the perfect stock and everything for it. Building AR's is great, but I want to hand a blunderbuss down to my grandson like "Kill those fucking Indians, Billy."

What else all do I need to actually shoot the damn thing?
100% new to black powder, figured that would be a good entry gun.

There's also the short barrel version for the same price, not 100% sure but fairly certain I like the long barrel more.
>>
>>31015074
Yeah it looks like a good deal. I got my 1858 from cabelas when it was on sale. I don't have experience with brass frames but I've heard that they do wear out quicker than steel and you can't use a conversion cylinder.
>>
>>31015145
I use 3f powder and .454 round balls for mine. You'll also need #10 percussion caps, wads and something to measure powder with. I usually just use the nose of the flask since it holds right around 30 grains.
>>
>>31015074
Holy shit anon thanks
>>
>>31015145
Caps, nipple wrench, bore butter or crisco, wads, powder flask and powder measure, maybe filler powder like cream of wheat if you dont want to use wads, cleaning supplies. I dont really care for wads.

It's funny that the extra cylinders are $50, might as well drop another 100 and get another entire pistol.

>nipple wrench, a straight line capper, adjustable powder measure, a powder flask, 30 lead round balls, 30 3mm-thick lubed wads and 30 10mm-thick lubed wads.

>nipple wrench
absolutely necessary
>straight line capper
need it if you want to reload fast/like the Civil War guys did but as a hobbyist not necessary
>adjustable powder measure
definitely good to have unless you only want to shoot the standard 30 grains (which is really hefty if you use real BP and not substitute)
>powder flask
you absolutely need this if you don't get the measurer, will probably need it anyway (also for reloading fast/like Civil War guys)
>balls/3mm wads
You'll need these, probably want more than 30 shots though
>10mm wads
These are for shooting blanks, unless you're reenacting/making a movie you don't need them

If you want brass you could always electroplate steel or actually plate it with brass sheet

yes. 85 grns pyrodex RS (because goex is more expensive than gold where I live), case filler made from 5/8 foam backer rod, and a .471" diameter 480 grn cast lead bullet.
>>

Is black powder shooting cheaper than .22 plinking?
>>
>>31020479
Depends on powder, ball, gun, etc
>>
>>31020498
Ball might not be a problem, I'm debating making my own shot, if I get into it. I live near Dale Hollow lake in TN. There's lead fishing weights all over, be it me pulling them off the bottom, or finding them in old tackle boxes.
>>
>>31020623
lead is the cheapest part of it. likely you could get more for free by asking for scrap from autoparts mechanics and the like.

Also, try youtubing "Gunpowder from urine" it is a lengthy and smelly process taking half a year, but you can make your own gunpowder for free. Cody's lab, the guy in the videos mentioned above, also has a vid or two on making fulminate of mercury, though...I'd just recommend purchasing your own caps.
>>
>>31019964
Are the snider bullet hollowbase?
>>
>>31020365
I get the cases from a guy on the British Military Forum. He forms them out of magtech 24 guage brass shotshells. The cases last at least a dozen reloadings if I take care of them.
>>
>>31020623
DALE HOLLOW LAKE IS THE SHIT
>>
>>31021810
No they are solid 535 grn bullets cast from a homemade mold. Hollow base bullets can be tricky to shoot accurately in the snider.
>>
>>31021823
what price is the brass? I'd love a martini Henry, but the ammo really puts me of. either the price of buying it yourself, or Forming the casings by hand.
>>
>>31021870
Brass is $48 for twenty five, which really isn't that bad when you divide the cost by how many times you can reuse them. He also sells the bullet mold. Here is the listing.

they are great fun to fuck around with, i think its my fav gun to take to the range now. after 50 rounds of practice with the glock 19, i love switching to cap and ball and taking my time loading and shooting smoke clouds. the cleaning is the biggest downside. just realize you pretty much need to clean after each shooting session or youll get rust/crystals growing on your gun's metal. cleaning is easy but somewhat of a process because you have to disassemble everything completely. but you just soak the parts in soapy warm water and brush them with a tooth brush then rinse, dry, oil and youre done

>>31024080
no, although its helpful to have for cleaning purposes. ideally you would want it, i hope my nipples arent frozen to the cylinder with rust.

yeah that list looks good, i use hogdon triple 7 also and pyrodex and both work well. start off using like 15-20 grain loads of bp. the brass frame can handle the 30 grain loads but not anything higher than that, and dont do the 30grain loads a lot. i only shoot 25 grain loads out of mine

the traditions brand seems to be one of the only brands that makes stuff for BP, they are good quality. you may want a line capper down the road, i dont have one but will get one soon. makes capping at the range a bit more convenient, if you have large clumsy fingers like mine

Anything I should know about getting a blackpowder revolver?

I'm thinking of getting pic related, 1851 Confederate revolver for $200 including the wads, bullets, cap wrench, powder flask and measurer and barrel brush.
Not sure if I should get the 4 7/8" barrel (pictured) or the 7.5" they're both the same price.

What are some good caps and powder to buy? This kit doesn't include them. Can I use just any wads and balls as long as they're .44?
Revolvers need a wad before and after the ball right?

Is it okay to leave a black powder loaded for a long time? How is it getting extra cylinders for a quick reload?
>>
>>31025191
>I'm thinking of getting pic related
use lighter BP loads in brass frames.

>Not sure if I should get the 4 7/8" barrel
Make sure either one has a loading lever or you will need a press kit to load the cylenders.
>>
>>31025326
How much lighter? Is the brass significantly weaker?
>>
>>31025191
Extra cylinders sure, not important unless you plan to fight Union soldiers with it.
Black powder does not keep well loaded as a rule of thumb, so don't.
>>
>>31025358
Not in a 'blow up your hand way' just will stretch, lose time and eventually be unsafe but you would be a moron to not see the signs.

I've got a few photos relating to 19th century (and earlier) barrel manufacture, starting out with the interior of a restored 19th century barrel forge.

If you can find it somewhere, there's a good documentary about how it was all done, "Gunsmith of Williamsburg".

My camera decided that it didn't like the battery level, so I had to make do with my phone.

Rifling cutting tool. You can't tell from the photo, but the ends are file-cut. Wedges are shove din to adjust for different calibres, or just to keep it tight against the barrel from one cut to another.

Half of a rifle boring setup. A large and heavy wheel is preferred so the inertia keeps things moving smoothly and evenly.

This then turns the drill-ish thing here. The barrel is on a sled connected to the arm above the window. Hanging a weight on the right hand of the arm pulls the barrel against the tool.

Rough boring tool. This isn't rotated to cut like a drill, try that and it'll get stuck and break, instead it's rotated the other way. Lubricate with linseed oil.

And the fine borer for finishing work. It's roughly square in cross-section, with slightly duller than right angle corners. You shim it on one side, leaving two corners to do the work, and of those you ideally want one kinda dulled to smooth things out, and one sharper to cut. Linseed oil again.

The material removed by this tool is so fine that I couldn't see any grain in the oil-iron mix created, it was just a smooth paste.

A not terribly user friendly gun. Yes, this was apparently ho to use it. Hell knows how anyone hit anything like this, but since it was done by people who needed to hit that bird if they wanted dinner, I guess it has something going for it.

The very short stock also had a nice, big, decorative metal ball on the end. To really drive home the message that you'd better hold on tightly.

And lastly a small couch/sled gun. The grey stuff held by the guy in blue is a chew toy pig. Local oral tradition being that you'd big the pig along and pull on its tail, and the bacon noises that ensured would lure in the wolves, who are then given a #3 buckshot facial.

It was up in Fågelsjö, a metropolis of western Sweden (eleven permanent residents). The video was just something we watched after dinner as it covered a lot of things we had been seeing and talking about, western gunmaking apparently being quite similar on both sides of the Atlantic.

I prefer flintlocks to percussion cap (just like em better).
I also prefer real BP to all the replacement crap. Nothing like getting some Swiss FF, FFF and Null-B for priming. That real BP smell and cloud of smoke...

One made the other obsolete.

Why is that? The caps seem like something to have to keep track of and take up space compared to just using a flint striker

>Can I use just any wads and balls as long as they're .44?
yes 44 wads and 451 or 454 balls, i like 451 because they are easier to load and still provide a full seal

>>31025191
>Revolvers need a wad before and after the ball right?
no, just before the ball on top of the powder.

>>31025191
>What are some good caps and powder to buy?
i only know 2 cap brands, remington and CCI, both work. get #10 size. powder: get a BP substitute if you dont want to worry about rusting if you dont clean for a couple days. get real BP for authenticity. the BP substitute ive been using is hogdon triple 7 . and pyrodex, they are both good but expensive. just recently i got Alliant Black MZ and it works just fine, and its 1/3rd the price

>>31025358
use like 25 grain loads max. they can handle 30grains but dont do that all the time. dont put anything higher than 30 grains

>>31026003
not really a point to extra cylinders with the colt style revolvers IMO. it takes a tool to remove the cylinder anyway, its kind of a pain. so its not like you can swap them out quickly like you can with a remington 1858 style

>>31026128
the brass work fine for the fun and experience, and i like the look. the advantage of the steel is they are strong enough to shoot really powerful hot loads and also convert to cartridge
>>
caps are superior in every way, thats why flintlocks became obsolete and were converted. the only reason to get a flintlock is for aesthetics and nostalgia and collectibility. which are very good reasons, but that disgusting monstrosity you posted with fiber optic sights? yeah wtf
>>
>>31027937
So with using a BP substitute, do you still have to autistically clean your gun every 10 seconds to prevent a black hole from forming?
>>
>>31028040
no and cleaning is a million times easier because the gunk doesnt stick as badly. with BP substitute you can come home after a day at the range and not clean it for a couple days and you wont come back to a frozen rusted out piece of shit
>>
>>31027937
What's the difference between real bp and substitutes?

Does the real BP need to be cleaned constantly while the synthetic doesn't? Is it the same otherwise? In terms of power, smoke/flash, smell etc?
>>
>>31027937
So Alliant Black MZ actually works?

Shit is stupid cheaper than Triple 7.
>>
>>31028257
yeah it works fine i havent noticed any difference in performance or cleaning vs Triple 7. actually it smells less bad than Triple7, which has a weird smell after it burns. but yeah its only like 10 bucks for a bottle vs triple 7 which is like 28 at my shop

You can make Stocks and shit for BP guns right? That crap isn't covered by ATF retardation.
>>
>>31029450
Yep, dunno the rules for hunting with it but a Walker with a top strap and a stock wouldbe neat for hunting applications
>>
Do you have to do some stupid storage rules for bottles of blackpowder from the ATF or can you just throw it in your safe?
>>
>>31028339
What's the best deal on wads you can get? Best I'm seeing is Cabela's at $9.99 for 100.
>>
>>31028457
Walmart has it where I live
>>
>>31027025
Quicker more reliable ignition...able to fire in the rain (assuming your main charge didnt get damp) and faster, less hangup with the shots.

That being said, if you want to go full DIY and mountain man, Flintlock is what you'd want. you can make effective gunpowder from piss compost rust and regular charcoal, but caps would be harder to come by
>>
>>31027937
Dose black powder substitute still have that Sulfurous smell?
>>
>>31029888
go on ebay there are people who cut the felt out themselves and sell it or you can get a stamp and do it yourself, it wont even cost you a fraction of a penny per wad once you buy the stamp and material
>>
>>31030323
>>31030323
not really, it has a different kind of sour smell. its hard to explain...kind of smells like those smoke/fog machines in theaters if you know what i mean?
>>
>>31029450
Yes. Even Felons can legally purchase own and possibly carry black powder weaponry.
>>
>>31030344
no, they cant. they just get around the law because there is no background check on BP items
>>
>>31029888
Also, do you need lubricated wads or do dry wads work?
>>
>>31030339
Well damn. I love the smell of sulfur.
>>
>>31030361
i dont see the point of lubed wads, supposedly helps keep the bore clean but im skeptical on that. and besides the bore is the last thing that will stop you from shooting if your gun is dirty. your cylinder will start slowing down and the hammer will start falling softly from all the gunk. i think lubed wads are a gimmick
>>
>>31030364
yeah it doesnt smell as good as real BP thats for sure. it kind of stinks
>>
>>31030361
from what ive read, Lube, is just for ease of use, ease of cleaning, and to seal the cylinder chamber better from sparks. though you wont have any issue from the later if your balls are of correct Circumference (when pressing into the Cylinder there should be a ring of lead cut off from the ball.)

>>31030350
in some cases, yes they can.
