On December 5th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy executed a surprise attack on the American Naval Base Pearl Harbor, annihilating the USA's Pacific Battleships but missing the juiciest targets: America's Pacific Aircraft Carriers. (This, of course, affected the colour of WWII naval warfare in the Pacific.)
But, what if things were switched about? Imagine if it was the other way around? What if all of the carriers were at anchor in Pearl Harbor while it was battleships which were at sea and thereby escaped destruction on that day that shall live in infamy? How would the war in the Pacific have been conducted had America lost its naval aviation and instead had a dreadnought-based fleet?

...also, I just watched Pacific Rim for the first & last time, and have a question:

The War in the Pacific theatre lasts longer, possibly a year or more, but the overall result is the same.

You can't escape modern society by joining with any of its institutions or affiliating yourself with anything it has created. If you want to be free from the shit you have to go whole hog, sever all association with it, go completely off the grid and effectively terminate any contact you have with them.
Because if you don't do it well enough they will try to drag you back, you're not allowed to live outside society, they think it's dangerous to them, or perhaps they don't fully understand why they hate the idea of it so much; but they're come for you if they can. You can get away with not being hidden if you're on the absolute most remote fringes of their society (and claimed land), but if you don't want to live in the Arctic circle or the middle of the Amazon then good luck.

But that's just a semi-educated guess, and for most people, those credentials just land you a job as a cop.

These days any conflict with a nation that has any sort of organised armed force is a massive undertaking and a lot of risk, and i think russia would definitely get a bloodied nose if they tried anything with finland. Maybe not beaten, but finland wouldn't be the normal proxy war or georgia the russians try on every so often.
