The PLA is trialing a new 5.8x42mm assault rifle - this time in conventional layout.

Looks like an ACR of some sort.
>>
modular, with different barrel lenght as well.
>>
>>31362585
Funny how armies go back to standard configuration guns after trying bullpups.
>>
>>31362585
>>31362588

Looks more like if an AK and an ACR had a baby from a loveless one-night-stand.

Looks like an updated QBZ-03.

I don't know who gets what, but typically these are only found in Mountain infantry or areas of cold weather.

Now that the QBZ-95 finally became tacticool, they want to change the rifle?

the funny part about this picture

why are they always trying to embarrass themselves?

also it looks like the front sight flips up but the rear is fixed. Which will make this the perfect gun for small arms artillery

Looks pretty good.

Certainly derivative of the QBZ-03, which isnt a bad rifle.

The 5.8 will make this rifle instant great-tier.
>>
>>31362593
Pla has been experimenting with both for a while. Seems like mechanized troops get bullpups and light and paratroops get the standard config rifles. I don't know why they would complicate their supply chain like that but they do.
>>
>>31362593
Modularity is the big thing these days. And no bullpup (or any other rifle for that matter) can compete with the AR in terms of Modularity or accessories.

>>
>>31363708
>>31363708
Since they have a rather huge standing army, I believe it's actually cheaper to give the "old" (but probably still fonctionnal) QBZ 95 to mechanized units than scrap them and buy completely new rifles for their whole armed forces.

Lots of armies do that btw (giving previous standard weapons to rear troops/reserve/whatever).

giving troop different gun that fire the same ammunition won't fuck up your logistic

Russian and soviet have fuck tons of different small and tons of different caliber despite that they are doing fine

In fact it is.

Read the article, which is the first ever impartial testing of the round by western people.

>Despite having better performance than 5.56mm at extended distances, the 5.8mm DBP-10 cartridge isn’t much heavier, at just 12.9 grams per shot (7.5% more).

why didn't they compare a 77 grain 5.56x45 to their 77 grain 5.8x42 ?
>>
>>31364990
long projectile like that probably more easily deflected by light brush, but it's heavier than 5.45 so probably a little better at least.

looks neat, now if only China would join NATO and insist on 5.8x42
>>
>>31362593
QBZ 95 was junk, not because it was a bullpup.

Simply because the 77 grain 5.56 isnt a mass-deployed round. The 77 grain DBP-88 is China's mainstay LMG round.
>>
>>31365090
that's quite a long throw for the striker to travel, and lots of size to it to get jammed up, i'd guess it's not nearly as resistant to mud and sand as an AR-15 or an AK.
>>
>>31365431

Ask the canadians, their QBs work fine.

If anyone is a writer for a gun website, compile some data on MK 262 performance and compare it to the Chinese 5.8x42 performance, please oh please.

It would be an interesting comparison with similar bullet weights.

Problem was that the state arsenal tasked with QBZ-95 production couldnt or was unwilling to upgrade the gun to a modern standard compatible with picatinny rails and attachments. The QBZ-95 was produced to 80s and 90s philosophy, with the focus being reliability, ruggedness and cheapness.

But since the PLA is radically modernizing all sorts of doctrines, they have the requirement for a modern modularized rifle with good upgrade prospects.

The lack of rails and modularization and the manufacturer unwilling to fix that problem is the main reason for the PLA searching for a next generation rifle.

But bullpup haters shouldnt be happy about it, as it isnt confirmed whether the new conventional rifle actually wins out, or whether another bullpup is being chosen.

Just shows that grain isnt just grain. The 5.8 is simply a larger round all around.

The "42mm" is misleading, as the bullet itself gets really long inside the case.

Very long OAL. Heavier and less compact. Dumb choice to be honest since China's logistics aren't the best to begin with.

Any info on how the ammo gets crated and its weight/size?

25kg for 1500 rounds of the slightly heavier upgraded DBP-88A heavy round.

Slightly lighter per round than an 1800rd crate of M855. Not as horrible as I thought weight wise and the side profile doesn't show as dramatic a OAL difference as the first pick did.
>>
>>31365913
Chinks are too prideful to copy it wholesale for their own army
They're fine with just copying a bunch of little things and passing it off as their own innovation
>>
>>31365913
they actually tested something like this in the 90s.

but didnt like it, because the AR platform was too maintenance intensive (shit where you eat etc.).

>>31366810
Chinese rifles since the Type 81 have last round bolt hold open. hence which is why their mags werent interchangeable with the AK.
>>
>>31366736

Or a memegun like the F2000.
>>
>>31365128
Many large companies want to design their own weapons rather than use or clone another country. UK has the SA80, Germany has the G36, France has the FAMAS. Although Germany and France are replacing both their rifles now
>>
>>31365714
yeah that looks like significantly more case capacity than 5.56 or 5.45
