What can I reupholster this in that will make it look less shitty?
I know it's an ugly couch but it's been in the family for 130 years.

Since you obviously ran to the internet for advice, the logical answer is pleather.
Here's the room it'll probably go in.
1. Sell it to somebody who cares about antiques
2. Buy something that isn't an antique so you can do whatever the fuck with it
Alternatively, shoot yourself for even considering to fuck with any kind of antique furniture.

Fist of all, that's not original upholstery, it's been re-done at least three times.
Secondly, I can't get rid of it, it's a family hairloom.

Well that's fair then. What kind of decor are you going for in your house? If it were me, I'd go with some kind of velvety looking fabric. Something to compliment the wood, maybe a deep green or blue? Solid colors are best, but you also don't want to go with a cheap fabric that will be less than complimenting to the wood.

White leather would look good and a better foam interior upgrade would be nice.
It's gonna be expensive no matter what you do
