How come they never made a Metroid game for the Nintendo 64?
Because nintendo 64 is a piece of shit
My guess would be that 2D was on the way out. And they didn't think to turn it into an FPS until later.
Iirc, they were having trouble figuring out how to do it. It was in development during one point but was scrapped. Metroid has never been an A list Nintendo franchise so it wasn't prioritized. Tbqh, most of Samus' fame seems to come from the 2000s. SSB, Metroid Prime, and the internet drooling over Super Metroid helped the series a lot.
I call Oddjob!
>>3547260
You fucker.
>>3547260
It's cool. We're using proximity mines.
>>3547260
Back then, the GoldenEye house rules were anyone who played as oddjob got kicked in the balls regardless of outcome
That rule still stands to this day
Does it deserve the praise it receives? Or is it an overrated meme game?
It's overrated by some, underrated by others.
People just can't seem to agree on Ikaruga, it's one of those "love it or hate it" games.
I personally think it's okay, liked Radiant Silvergun better.
Also "overrated" should get an autoban filter.
>>3547204
>liked Radiant Silvergun better.
This, I can agree with, if only because the boss designs were far superior to Ikaruga's (as most of them were designed by NAMI the Mighty).
I liked it, but I'm not really big on shooters so my opinion probably doesn't matter.
Post some retro games with demons and occult beings in them.
Is there anything new in the Mega CD version of SMT besides music?
>Be me
>Think that pretty much all vehicular combat games are trash

>Holyshit.PNG
So I have been having an absolute blast with this game, it's all I want from a game like this, customization, area specific damage, pretty great physics... It can be frustrating at stages, but I urge anyone who has a working PC to try it now.
>>3546910
Ever play Twisted Metal?
>>3546913
Yep, it wasn't bad, but not the game i really wanted. I am a picky bitch...
>>3546913
Twisted metal is more arcade like Interstate us more of a simulation. It runs on the Mech Warrior 2 engine if i remember correctly, and the customization is pretty much the same, only instead of a mech you customize a car.
Does /vr/ actually know any hipsters who have joined the retro gaming bandwagon, or are they merely just the boogeyman I suspect them to be?
I do, but most of them don't collect heavily like the collectors here believe. They are a boogeyman for collectors.
Most hipsters I know spend more money on clothes and shoes than anything else. One guy I know who I guess fits into the generic hipster description is into collecting vinyl records, not vidya, although he does like video games and the whole "lol retro 80s pixels!" thing.
The guy I know who actually jumped into the retro bandwagon recently (like, he used to think anything non-modern was shit until recently) actually does seem like the actual boogeyman collectors hate. He spends hundreds of dollars every month on rare Saturn games and thousands on consoles. He isn't a hipster, just a wealthy weeb.
>>3546794
retro games have always been trendy. it's not your secret club
>>3546794
I haven't met any honestly but I tend to only hang out with people my own age who (thank god) missed the whole hipster movement. So Idk. Maybe it is just a meme. Although one of the more popular hipster bars in my city has a bunch of arcade games in it so who knows.
>two 30-second loop songs as ""soundtrack""

Why is this considered the GOAT again?
For the same reason your grandpa is a better person than you.
>>3546758
Back in the day there weren't many games to play, and children have zero imagination and didn't want to read books. In that time, games such as LoZ have enough room to success
>>3546758
>Why is this considered the GOAT again?
It's not. Even back in the day it wasn't.
Are there any mods of FFT that are actually any good?
So far we have:
>hard for the sake of hard adn turns every battle into 60 minute slug fests to show how hardcore the makers are
>shitty fan fiction
I liked LFT as it was (mostly) just enhanced vanilla. A little harder, but not stupid hard.
>>3546659
Later versions of 1.13 actually tone the difficulty of the earlier versions way down and focus on content. If you played it a good while ago, give it another try.
>>3546659
1.3. Content patch is actually fair and decent
LFT is also good
Would you play the Gear Boyâ„¢ /vr/?
>>3546652
Heck yeah.
Heck yeah, I would.
hmm the pad on the palm of your hand behind your thumb would cover the speaker
>>3546667
>needing sound to play games
What are /vr/'s thoughts on pic related?
also obscure gems thread.
>>3546481
Its good, but it has mandatory grinding which sucks.
Also it starts amazing and tapers off really hard at chapter 3 and 4 especially just feels like a grind.
>obscure gems
Maybe because it wasn't released in NA, but I assure you Terranigma isn't obscure by any stretch of the imagination.
>>3546481
I can count on my fingers the number of jrpgs that I liked. Terranigma is one of them. What I loved:
>story is good and not more of "thou have to save the princess"
>likeable characters
>combat isn't a boring
>dungeons are diverse with amazing atmosphere
>traveling over the world (many locations to explore), city building
>amazing graphics and sound
>>3546481
Great game.
Another one of those esoteric masterpieces inspired by the new age conspiracy boom during the 80s in japan.
Lots of subtle hints at those concepts in there.
Too bad the creator of the games was killed by yakuza
>People hate Ultima 8
>People love the Crusader series
Can somebody explain?
Retro gamers? Being hypocritical cuckolds that hate good games for no reason???
I'd have never thought!
>>3546474
i hated U8. it was a shitty adventure point and click game.
i consider myself well versed in early games but never even played crusader. it actually looks fucking cool and i will play it soon.
People hate Exteme Paintbrawl
People love Duke Nukem 3D
Can somebody explain?
Anyone else think nes & famicom are best nintendo consoles by far?
They really have that retro feel
And the games are actually arcadey and challenging unlike the ultra casualized snes
>mario trilogy / doki doki picnic
>contra
>shatterhand
>battletoads
>6 megamans
Just a fuckload of excellence
>casualized
That term didn't even exist before 6th or 7th gen.
Your lingo is Not Retro.
Famicom is a pretty cool console though, I agree with that.
>>3546420
>And the games are actually arcadey and challenging unlike the ultra casualized snes
You picked just a couple of examples to base this claim on ? I could use games like Wild Guns or Ninja Warriors to claim otherwise.
Besides this is hardly an argument when you bring all 6 Mega Man games even though 5 and 6 are "casualized", to use your term.
Anyway stupid thread.
What have you liked or disliked about the castleVania games as they've changed? Do you prefer classic style restricted controls, or the exploration based free movement style more?
I'm thinking of making something similar to CV3, but I'm not set on how restrictive I want things to be.
>>3546308
I liked that in the classic games, you couldn't change your direction mid-air. I always found this mechanic of SMB weird and unrealistic. I also liked the falling speed, instead of floating jumps you slammed the ground (or fell into a pit) with a speed of a meteor.
What I hated was that the speed of moving on stairs was atrociously slow. I mean, even IRL it's not slow.
>>3546308
Do you play Castlevania on a touch screen? I tried and couldn't do it.
>>3546317
hah, not as a rule. I keep it on my phone so I can quick reference the game on the go when I have a question. Right now I'm just trying to remake a level or 2 of CV to get a feel for things before I start on my project.
What are some retro video games with mullets?
More pics of that cool mullet
Last Battle
>>3546294
Huh, didn't know this existed. I also was searching for some manga-based games for 3rd-4th gen so thanks
Why did The Last Revelation have such a polarizing reception critically? Tons of critical reviews panned or wrote it off, yet among Tomb Raider fans it's considered one of the highlights of the series.
>>3546060
Dont remember a single bad review.
As for me the best in the series, I still remember the pyramids, scorpions (large ones) underwater level, planets you had to pull with skeletons running around.
I just realised I need to replay all games because I barelly remember them and with TR always being a bit otherwordly when it comes to the mood of the game, there is no alternative to those games.

>The Last Revelation have such a polarizing reception critically?
I don't remember any negative reviews on the game at the time. It was being marketed and reviewed as being the very last game in the series, though. I wish it had been.
Then Chronicles came out and that was the point I lost interest in Tomb Raider at all. I'm sure that game was the one more hated.
>>3546060
Fans that want more of the formula vs. average players that were tired of the formula. Not that hard to explain. Even for TR3 I remember reviews complaining that the engine hadn't updated significantly enough and it was mostly a game for diehards.
