just started this today.
I swear, I must've attempted to play the whole game through some 5 times since it came out in the 90s. for some reason or another, I just never got to the end.
I think the furthest I ever got was like, floor 20 in the tower.
anyway, what are some tips or overall info I should know about?
also,Nico is best girl..
>>3555840
I should go back and play that myself someday. Only ever rented it and liked it, but didn't get around to picking it up. Sorry I can't help more.
>>3555847
for the longest time, I thought rogue-like games were a lot of fun, but that's mostly because of how many things this one did right:
>town building aspect
>monster taming system complete with fusion option
>tasteful waifu simulator
>addicting and fast paced dungeon exploration
>>3555857
Roguelikes are one of my favorite genres, but they're not for everyone and even though the genre is fairly tightly defined the types of games you get out of it vary greatly. So it's possible to love one game but not like a bunch of others.
This thread has inspired me to go dig up a rom and give this game another whirl.
Search PSX on Google
>second image
GEEEEEE, I WONDER WHY
It's all part of a big hoax, your pic was always called a PS1. Sony knew they were going to make a PS2 so they called the PS1 PS1 beforehand. But underages believed the PSX meme and shit is now out of control, internet is a good tool to spread missinformation, hence people actually believing the term PSX was ever used.
>>3555672
it was PS until they came put with the small version they called PSOne right before the release of the PS2
>>3555675
Not, it was always the PS1, you would know it if you weren't underage and actually lived through the 90s just like me. PS and PSX is modern underage shit.
What's the best way to refurbish my N64 joystick?

I get durability, but wtf do the 'range' and 'feel' meters mean?

Oh man the steel+teflon and Lodgenet look great
Can someone please explain how the this setup would be inferior to using a framemeister?
I still own my original snes although it currently just has composite cables.
>>3555548
What is that, SCART to component? I mean, I doubt it'll work, you'll need a cable with a box on it to convert or an internal mod to your console.
If you're using PAL, which I hope not, then you're wasting your time anyway because anything you get out will be 50hz garbage.
People like Framemeisters because they add in some dumb scanline shit to try and hide how bad the picture looks on a HDTV. Just emulate if you're too stupid to buy a CRT.
>>3555551
I'm using PAL - so you're saying anything including framemeister will look shit on a hdtv because of that?
>>3555562
You shouldn't own anything PAL. It looks like shit on anything, 50hz is for retards.
There is literally nothing wrong with credit-feeding an arcade gameif it's your first time playing the game.
>>3555471
Yeah there is, you're hogging the cab from someone else wanting to play.
nooo we need to save those poor neglected machines!!!
I really don't care
Why is the NES still so relevant today?
I mean the NES Mini isn't the cause of it, it's a consequence of it. There's a market for the hype on the little fucker.
But why does the general public care so much more about the NES right now in 2016 than they do the Super Nintendo, or the Genesis, or the PS1?
Some exceptionally good games on the system that people find to be timeless and/or iconic.
>>3555373
You can thank AVGN for that, as well as the inflated market.

pretty much this
started the fire and the fire spread all over with retro in general
I never understood the love for this game. I've heard many people call this game the best shmup on the PCE/TG16. How good it is and so on.
The first time I tried the game was about a decade ago. Gave it a couple more tries over the years. Gave it another try just right now. And the game is as stale and boring as always.
This game has way too many dead spaces (areas where there's no action of any kind). The music is repetitive. The background scrolling effect is nauseous.
This game is a 7/10 at best. This game is nowhere near the best SHMUP on the system.
That title belongs to Soldier Blade and Air Zonk (tied for the best).
I think the reason why people love this game so much is because of nostalgia, considering that this game was one of the more popular and early releases on the system. One of those games that everyone played, just like everyone with a Duo owned and played Ys 1 & 2, so obviously love that game.
It was just impressive for the time, but it's not the best on the system. It came out fairly early in the console's life.
The game doesn't really get good till zone 4 the first 3 areas are kind of a snooze. Maybe play on a difficulty that isn't dog mode (the games default) try god mode
are there retro shmups that don't have pickups that feel like punishment? with this game and others i have a gay old time until i run into a shitty shot type, die, then die more because my power's gone. i realize that it's mostly because i need to git gud but it would be nice to play something without that kind of thing happening.
It seems the time of one company taking shots at others is all but gone in modern vidya. Let's post some retro pot shots.
That sonic shoes render actually looks pretty amazing.
I'm sure Rare could have pulled off a pre-rendered 3D sonic that looked much better than 3D Blast.

Sonic R would have been my favorite entry if not for the vehicle acceleration and fucked splitscreen.
You forgot the poll, OP.

I have never played any of these. It's Spooktober, so I figured now would be as good a time as ever to start.
Question is, which one should I start with? Help me out here, /vr/.

get NO$PSX emulator and run Symphony of the Night.
The best one is easily Symphony of the Night. But most of them pre-reboot (pre- Lords of Shadow) are excellent.
Anyone have a clue how to get a snes core working on the psp version of retroarch?
Thanks

subpar belt scroller and poorman's tetris
yay?
I wish Nintendo put as much effort into their VC releases as Sega does into these. The Streets of Rage 2 release (I think all of these 3d classics do, but I can only speak for SoR2) has really great 3d effects; the only time i've actually turned the slider on for any length in time. You can choose to either have the screen pop or recede, and both look quite nice. If you also switch to retro mode, it adds a really nice composite filter and a curvature that pops out of the screen like a CRT display when you turn on 3D. All that on top of alternate soundtracks, remixed levels and other shit. In short, fuck you Nintendo if you think I'm going to pay 10 bucks for a SNES rom when your official emulation is less accurate than several free alternatives and you act like save states are the new hotness.
I actually wanted AlienSoldier, but Alien Syndrome is alright.

meh.
Are games that run on retro engines like Unreal Engine 2 considered retro?
>>3554893
ue2 is not retro, it was relased in the 2002.
No.
Now onto a real question: Why is Unreal retro, but Deus Ex isn't?
Same engine.
Both will run under windows 98.
Both run best with a 3DFX card.
>>3556825
>it was released on 2000?!!! that's not retro anymore!!!!1111
what is retro anymore? get your shit together /vr/
Can you guys share some of your favorite Dungeon Crawlers with me?
>>3554883
Might and Magic 6 (still counts) and Wizardry 8. Sorry your thread died.
>>3554897
That's okay.
If /v/ doesn't show any interest I usually compensate by making a thread on /vr/ if the topic fits the criteria.
What about MM5:World of Xeen?
Only heard good things about it and the spriteart looks pretty impressive.
>>3554914
I spoke too soon, your thread is still alive. Xeen is fun with lots of things to explore but the combat is pretty easy. Worth checking out at least for the setting and keep in mind cloudside and darkside were originally two separate games.
