FDS version of Zelda 2.
After years of seeing /vr/ argue their guts out regarding this game, I decided to play it and judge for myself.
The first 2 levels were admittedly very easy, although not necessarily easier than the first few levels of other Castlevania games, excluding the NES ones, which I think remain the hardest ones.
But I'm already on the 3rd level and shit is getting tough, I already got a game over, which didn't happen to me as quickly when I played Rondo of Blood and Bloodlines.
Also, the whip control feels different from the NES games, but it actually feels more like an update to the stablished formula, not a different kind of game as I've read some people here say, I'm definitely liking it, at least, I'm liking it more than Bloodlines' diagonal whipping.
I'm going to continue now and try to beat the 3rd level, but I'm really enjoying this game a lot, I guess I can confirm all the hate this game gets is just memes, as all Castlevania games are actually awesome.
Castlevania thread, I guess.
>getting a game over in fucking stage 3
>didn't have a problem with RoB/BL though
Falseflag thread? IV is objectively the easiest Classicvania and doesn't arguably put up a challenge until the hex stages.
>>3685986
Not OP, but I'm betting he got falling/drowning while hesitating. It's normal if it's his first time playing.
Stage 4 is my personal favorite. Have fun, OP.
>>3685986
OP here, why falseflag? I'm being honest. First time playing this game.
And yeah, I didn't have any problem with the first 2 stages of Rondo of Blood and Bloodlines. As opposed to Castlevania 1 which 2nd stage still kicks my ass.

I died a couple of times during the vertical segments, falling off yeah. I got to the boss with the last live and got hit by one of the fireballs, knocked back, and fell.
I continued and got past this level though, just played stage 4 and yeah I loved it, stage 5 was really short and no boss, and Stage 6 I started having trouble again, I just got another game over, again on the boss, but I died a lot trying to get there anyway.

Well I hope you're not still saying "Eye Dee Software"
I thought I was having fun playing the games I liked, but thanks to /vr/ I now know my taste was shit and I should feel ashamed.
>thought any Pokemon attack that didn't do actually damage was just in the game for flavor.

What are some good fighters NOT named Street Fighter or King of Fighters?
rival schools.
that's it.

This right here.
Though if you dont mind silly shit BAT is solid.
Hi, boys.
What do you know about dendy? The pirate's console from sun-faced russia.
Dendy was just another of the many, many famiclones that existed all around the world. Kinaman made Dendy famous on youtube, but the most common famiclone was the Family Game.
>>3684965
The early era Famiclones were pretty good because unlike these shit modern ones they didn't have problems running some games.
>>3685049
fuck i remember having one of those, i bought one of those on a trip to south america, i always thought it was just a region changed name for south america since they wouldnt understand what famicom meant before i got into retro vidya enough to look shit up.
As a black guy I always liked how Japanese developers threw us a bone and added black characters to games.
What are some of your favorite retro black characters, vr?
Jynx
>>3684263
Growlithe can learn Dragonbreath?
Cyrus is probably my favorite black hero in games. Shame I can't get redguard to work in win 7, really want to play it again.
This game keeps wasting my time and I'm sick of it.
Fucking artificial length.
What the fuck are you talking about? If you can't finish a dungeon before the 3 days, then you are doing something wrong.
>>3683909
That's not what I'm talking about.
Want examples? Let me give you examples.
>have to go do the whole moon tear thing again when I reach the swamp
>Shooting range mini game (with the love birds)
>changes every day so I figure I gotta win all 3
>spend time to win first two
>tells me I need a bow for 3rd day
>okay.jpg
>photo mini game
>take shots of a couple of things, figure it's worhtless
>take shot of a fairy inside the temple, temple which is in the swamp
>tells me the shot wasn't taken in the swamp
>finally get the clue about his son after acquiring the mask
>have to re-do the sneaking mini game to get back to the son
>get back to him and says the contest has ended, so I gotta re-do all that again
>get the pig mask, find a mushroom
>have to re-do the "bring potion to the other bitch" before it does anything,
>but for that I need to empty the bottle, except you can't just get rid of the mushroom like that
This just goes on and on. Also waiting for a specific time for an event, when that time is far from 6.
All the stuff that stays or that is taken away when you go back in time is completely abritary, and is just made to waste your time, because some other stuff do stay.
This game has qualities but only desperate fanboys would defend this.
The whole time mechanic is a big fuck you to players and the game would be much better without it (or by keeping everything you've done when you go back in time, at least).
>>3683928
You don't have to do the Moon tears thing more than once.
The bow thing is legit, but I don't know what you would be doing trying to win a shooting gallery without a bow.
The Photographer's son isn't the Bean Seller, it's Tingle. Why on earth would you assume it was the Bean Seller?
If you have the pig mask, why would you need to worry about anything if you can just go back in time? Besides, you don't need to get Blue Potion. The Deku in Ikana sells it for 80 rupees a pop.
Apart from the cute graphics are these jrpgs actually good games? How does it compare to Lufia 1+2 or FF II + III?
>>3682917
BOF1 is meh, BOF2 is good, BOF3 is good, BOF4 is also good (whenever it's better than 3 varies), BOF5 is like marmite.
I recommend the retranslation patch for 2.
>>3682917
Also it's more like Lufia where people have set roles, and not like FF2/3 where people can be molded into what role you like.
>>3682917
Poorly.
The games only start to be good at 3, but then 3 is about 4 times as long as it should be, and that makes it kind of terrible.
hows your dreamcast collection going. here are all my capcom fighters

My Dreamcast collection consists of a Dreamcast, a controller, and two memory cards.
I love their Stags. I can kill heroes with them. Too bad their economy sucks, so I can only cast powerful spells once I've captured a few nodes or other non-klack towns and deal with all the unrest.
>>3677432
Gnolls are better.
Their bases produce more energy. They get galleys to cross the ocean at a respectable speed. They have bowmen to capture phantom warrior sorcery nodes.
They are not totally despised by other factions. Their units are cheap. They can rush other bases faster than anyone else: Granary>Stables>Wolf Riders.
When I conquer Klackons I build a few engineers if I don't already have them then then I disband the base by rushing colony pods.
>>3677432
Klackons are cut off from most of the tech tree and it fucking sucks hard once you're actually past early game. It's great to have 1 or 2 Klackon villages from conquering but having them as your main race is a huge pain.
What >>3678018 said
Klackons, Gnolls and Lizardmen are the three races that are designed around early rushing because bad building trees, but Klackons have terrible unrest unlike the other two, so while the others can transition into actually buillding up a good race after the initial conquer period, Klackons just kinda peter out unless you have some abusive magic build going on.
Their advantages really needs to be a lot higher to support their very "self-centered" theme going on.
>>3678338
>It's great to have 1 or 2 Klackon villages from conquering
Dat Unrest though.
Let's dispense with the foreplay and have a giant Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 thread.

I always liked playing a mage but I'm boring like that.

Jan Jansen. Funny guy, but his story still gave me the feels.
>Waifu?
Aerie. Some people say she's annoying, I find her adorable.
>Most enjoyable fight?
Any of the dragons, Just feels like an accomplishment.
>Most memorable music?
The BG1 title theme.
I'm talking Harvester, Tex Murphy Under a Killing Moon, Commander Blood. Hong Kong 97, etc.
Monster Party. I know they were originally going for a parody deal that got toned down in the released US version, but even then it is a strange, disjointed, and generally surreal game

Weird dreams lives up to its name. It plays like goddamn Dragon's Lair for the NES, though.

What exactly was Nintendo thinking, underclocking the Super FX chip in the first few games that used it? It was capable of running at 21 MHz but they underclocked it to 12. What the fuck for?
Later games that used it let it run at the full 21 MHz, but as far as I'm aware the only physical difference between these variants is the clock speed. What was the point? Wouldn't Starfox have made a bigger impression if it could run at a smoother framerate out of the box? (I know you can get it overclocked but that's not the point.)

>draw too much power from the cartridge slot

This is an issue with the SuperFX. The dev manual states that certain peripheral devices, such as the multitap, can't be used with the SuperFX because it exceeds the current ratings of the SNES.
However, I doubt that the first gen SuperFX was clocked at 12MHz for that reason. Something tells me it had more to do with concerns about stability or something.
When a new CPU model is first being manufactured, it's common for a certain percentage of chips produced to be unstable when running at the highest "supported" clock speed, but run perfectly fine at a slower clock speed. For example, this is why you'll see multiple variations of an i5 that differ only in clock speed today, since the chips that failed manufacturer testing while running at the highest clock speed can simply be clocked down and sold as a cheaper option instead of being discarded. It's also the same story with 3-core or 6-core CPUs: They most likely came off the same assembly line as the corresponding 4- or 8-core chip but bad one or two bad cores disabled before shipping, and those cores can usually be reenabled in your computer's BIOS.
The manufacturing process for that chip generally gets improved over time to a point where they can more reliably make chips that run full speed without problems, so it's likely that they went with 12MHz early on then upgraded to 21MHz at the end since that was the yield they had to work with.
Alternatively, process shrinking allowed them to make a faster chip that ran without overheating near the end of the chip's lifespan (less likely since die shrinks usually entail significant changes to the manufacturing process, same reason why they only happen every few product cycles with modern CPUs).
