Megaman X. It has the best wall jumping in genre

It's honestly really mediocre and basically a bad game whenever it's in the presence of a good one.

Nobody at Rare likes videogames, kids, or even their own families and friends. They are hateful, selfish, bitter, vindictive, joyless people who make their games based on absolute opportunism. They just copy other shit and slap some of the worst most avuncular humor on it, just because that's actually how little they think of the gaming audience they aim for.

If you like DKC you literally like something that thinks you're a fat ugly nerd with no friends and no taste.
>>
>>3693641
Definitely not. The best /vr/ platformer is Alien Soldier.

Is there anything comfier than an evening in your PJs playing old school point-and-click adventure games?

I maintain that there is not. Aside from an evening in your PJs playing old school point-and-click adventure games while watching Bob's Burgers on a second monitor. There are some upsides to the 21st century.

Anyway, adventure game thread. Text adventures also welcome but not what I'm focusing on.

And a topic to start us off:

This collection pisses me off. It's so lazy and half assed. It could have been GREAT. They could have rebuilt all the games using MM9's engine. Instead it's just lazy emulation. A god damn NES emulator and roms and it's only the first six games. It's not even the entire classic series. That you pay 20 dollars for. They could have even done something neat like rebuild MM7-8 in the MM9 engine and include both versions of the games.

Oh does MM3 have slowdown in it? If they're doing emulation at least tell me they removed sprite fliker and overclocked the CPU.

Because the PS/PS2/NGC ports have zero slowdown.

Who gives a fuck about PAL optimization, if anything what I am confused of is why 50/60hz selectors found in CAPCOMs survival horror titles were not standardized for every release or something akin to being able to select 50/60hz in the consoles system settings.

Platforming is such a bitch in this game. You have no feedback from your legs, so you have no clue where they are. So there's a tendency to want to jump prematurely. You instead have to jump right when you think you're past the edge (but aren't).

I can't even imagine how insanely frustrating this must have been on the N64.

I managed to beat this game when I was 11, so it's not that tough. Protip: use the overlay map, it makes the tough jumping sections much easier to gauge.

yeah it's a poorly thought out way to make variety. Turok never seemed to figure out that varied, interesting enemy placement in arena type environments is the best way to design these games until very late in the game and in turok 2. >>3691534 is good advice too.

So /vr/, what's the current best handheld for emulation?

My hacked PSP of 5 years is finally dying, and I looked into things and discovered the strange possibility that the best emu-handheld may still possibly be a PSP running CFW, which is really odd.

Problem is all I give a shit about are results. Sure, there are handhelds out there with way better specs, but the reality is a hacked PSP can still play everything Generation 4 and below IN ADDITION to the fact that it also plays PSX games near perfectly and of course ISO-loaders for PSP games perfectly. If you give no shits about piracy it still seems like the best device for a pure "what it can actually do" perspective. Especially for GBA emulation the PSP is absolutely GOAT, the only time I ever preferred playing an emulator over the original.

So my question is this: Am I wrong? Because I actually want to be wrong. Is there a handheld out there that actually matches this thing? How is 3DS emulation in comparison.

Vita can do most things the PSP can do (it can literally install and run PSP homebrew/games as if it was a PSP) and more. It was only recently blown open, so most things are still in development. Right now it already does GBA and SNES emulation better across the board, and with some more development, it should also be able to do playable N64 and DS emulation in the future. Native PSX emulation will be unlocked in February, until then there's a RA emu available that works fine for most games.

Plenty of PSP games and even some PSX games (Ape Escape) play better on the Vita due to the availability of a second joystick. Of course you also have access to vita piracy if you care about that.

Granted, right now, the Vita is significantly more expensive than a PSP and it can't do a whole lot more yet in terms of retro. So if you don't care at all about PSP/vita/dual joystick PSX, you might as well just stay with a PSP.

Before I leave I also want to mention that emu on the 3ds is fucking awful. Literally worse than the PSP in every goddamn way. It can run some things (GBA and I believe SNES?) natively, but only to an extent. Some games straight up don't work. Anything past gen 4 is a pipedream Avoid like the plague.

Anyone have one of this? Thinking of getting one since it's cheaper then getting an AV Famicom and a working FDS.

Are there still any lost prototype or unreleased games out there in the wild that we haven't discovered/dumped yet?

Pic sort of related.

>>

Sure, why not? There were probably more abandoned projects than completed ones. The startup cost for development on most consoles wasn't particularly high. Several consoles didn't even have official dev kits and the kits weren't really mandatory anyways.
>>
>>3688974
bouncer was apparently completed and it's disappeared from the world without a trace
>>
There are likely a ton of almost finished games towards the end of the life of every console.

There's also prototypes in the hands of asshole collectors, since they'd be worth less if dumped. I know there is this shitty Happy Birthday game on the Atari 2600 of which one guy owns the only copy in existence and he refuses to dump the ROM.

I mean it's surely a piece of shit but it's a piece of shit that's part of gaming history.

Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:
NES
SNES
GB/GBC OR Sega Game Gear
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA OR Sega Master System
Commodore 64 OR Commodore Amiga
Playstation 1 OR Nintendo 64
You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Select your system here:
http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:

http://s3kr.it/systems/

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

Rules:

1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.

2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)

3) Playstation 1 games can be given up to 2 weeks to complete if the game is more than 2 discs.

4) If you lose / give up to a game you have to go back one square instead (ie if you gave up a Genesis game, you go back to GB/GBA and continue frome there)

5) For Rule 4, if the game you fail is on the same path as another console, you have the choice to roll for that console instead of dropping down a level.

For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is:

If no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
if you're playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score

If you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week [Depending on the game needs to be asked in thread]

I am tempted to say the DualShock 4, if only because it works right out the gate, and the PS1, 2, and PSP are all systems that can be emulated today with relative ease.

Three systems the controller matches automatically, and then has enough buttons for whatever else you might want to play.

Of course, there's plenty of other fine choices as well. This is just the best one I can come up with.

Pentium, Pentium 2, Pentium 3, or Pentium 4?
List the pro/cons of each and any alternatives you know of.
Are there any old laptops that are capable of handling the graphics and sound of these games (I will be outputting to a CRT monitor of course)?
What soundcard, videocard, and 3D accelerator card do you reccomend?
Is there any advantage to running Win95 instead of Win98SE? I know 98 has niggernet exploder bloatware built in. Can 95 and 98 run Win3.1 games?

Also I will need an older system for PC-booter and CGA shit that will run too fast on the former PC.
What should I use:
IBM 8086 or clone ,Tandy, 286, 386, or 486?
List the pros/cons of each and any alternatives you know of.
What version of DOS should I use? What about CP/M and DR. DOS?

What is the best place to look for old computers? Craigslist and G-sales in my area only have WinXP machines at the oldest.

Why would it ever be better to run with an older processor?
>>
>>3686115
Some games are built around a specific processor speed.
>>
>>3686115
I am talking about the motherboard chipset which sockets the CPU as well. Later motherboards dropped or crippled legacy features like ISA slots.

This thead is about putting together original hardware not emulation on modern PCs.
