I think half of the cartridge port is supposed be covered by the lid. So to play cartridge games, you would need the lid up to expose the lens, like playing Famicom games on the AVS. To use the backup save cart for CD games, you just have to hot swap the disc and plug in the cart to save then pull the cartridge out and swap the CD back in to continue.
