Retro devs appreciation thread
can someone explain
How come DMA developed lemmings, Psygnosis published it and somehow Team 17 holds rights to it.
>>3078537
arn't they still around as Rockstar North or something?
>>3078586
Psygnosis got bought up by Sony after falling on rough times i think?
What a terrible sequel to a truly great game. The original ActRaiser was a challenging and fun hybrid of action-platforming and sim sections that were pretty fun. I guess you could say the sim sections were a little shallow, but I think it's better that way so they don't overwhelm the action segments of the game. Plus, you still get to fight monsters as you grow your city, which is pretty cool.
ActRaiser 2 removed the sim aspect of the original game that made it so original and memorable. The difficulty is ratcheted up so high that even on Easy you'll die very quickly on the first couple levels, partly because of traps that do a ton of damage that are hard to avoid thanks to the terrible controls for jumping and flying. The first game was hard, but (save a couple cheap moments) fair, even with some slightly stiff controls in regards to sword swinging and jumping. In ActRaiser 2, it's difficult to figure out how you're supposed to control the Master/God while he's flying. They tried to expand the action parts by giving you a shield and letting you attack from different angles as well as hover, but it's not worth it considering the awful flight controls and the fact that you move much slower than in the original game, which makes it feel like a total slog.
At least the graphics are pretty nice. The music is beautiful and retains the epic and orchestral vibe the original had, although it (ironically) feels a little less actiony now. The numerous gameplay issues are a huge problem, though. How could they fuck up the sequel to ActRaiser so hard?
Also forgot to mention that there's a password system even though the original had saves, which is fucking stupid
Simulation mode in the original was more of a grind than anything, there was no lose condition, you just keep killing imps and lighting old houses on fire and building better houses in their place.

ActRaiser takes two things and does them okay. ActRaiser 2 takes one thing and does it damn well.
The developer's only mistake was trying to cash-in on the popularity of ActRaiser 1 by calling this a sequel. ActRasier 2 was clearly designed with a different audience in mind. It's nonetheless a solid game on its own merits.
Do you guys think the original 3D assets for the DKC trilogy still exist?
If they did we could potentially get a flawless HD remaster, which would be fucking amazing.
The assets were stored on DAT tapes. That's all I know.
>>3077887
>If they did we could potentially get a flawless HD remaster, which would be fucking amazing.
But the games would still suck.Besides which, they could just recreate the levels using DKCR.
>>3077904
>But the games would still suck.
How fucking dare you.
>Besides which, they could just recreate the levels using DKCR.
DKCR doesn't have anywhere near the aesthetic quality of the Rare trilogy.
How rare is this game? In all the time I've been searching for it (a month or two), I've never seen a single CIB copy show up on eBay, and only one loose disc copy. All the rest of the listings are for the various Japanese copies of the game.
Pretty much every other "rare" retro game, until you get into the uber rare games like Air Raid, always has at least one listing up on eBay, so I find it curious that this game has never shown up.
the rom isn't rare
By Sega CD standards, it's uncommon (not rare or common). However it's a good game that most Sega CD owners want, and that makes in rare from a general sense.
>>3077879
You must not be looking too hard. The sold auctions show that there have been 3 or 4 sold in the last month.
favorite /vr/ easter eggs and general weirdness in the game files?
No really retro but the Pikmin disc includes a working Windows build of the game.
>>3077546
That's really fucked up
>>3077763
why?
What the hell are those weird UFO things? I don't remember them being in Sonic the Hedgehog.
They're only in the Chinky bootleg arcade cab that Noah's got two of.
>>3077532
A PVM in the bedroom? Damn, Benjamin really DID have a fully-functional babe layer.
So /vr/ I need some help.
My Dreamcast has problems reading some games, even tho they look just fine. I git like 20 games, of which my dreamcast is not possible to play 5, for example worms armageddon.
When I try to start the games, the console stays a while at the "Dreamcast Windows CE" Screen and than just goes into the dreamcast menu, like there was no game.
Is this fixable and if so, what can I do to repair it.
cmon /vr/ don't let me down on this
IIRC, something in the DC "dies" making it impossible to read games (this happened to my original console back in '04 or so).
Seems odd that it only does it to certain games, though.
Have a bump.
Where does /vr/ get their DC games? Prices seem to be skyrocketing lately, I bought Third Strike a couple years ago for $30 and it's over $100 on eBay.
Is it possible to enjoy VP on an emulator? I keep feeling tempted to pay the Jew for a physical copy.
>>3076926
Yes.
>>3076926
>not finding a copy at a yard sale for 4.99
top kek.
No, this game is unenjoyable on emulators.
Is it as bad as they say it is?
>THQ
You bet.
No, but it's still definitely not good.
I remember one portion of the map had floating trees with invisible interiors. That's how sloppy this thing is.
>>3076815
Yes. The character designs are shockingly bad. The running animation is atrocious. The production values for every cutscene after the first one are in the toilet.
Unlike Holy Magic Century (Aka Quest 64 in its bastardised American form), Aidyn Chronicles is a genuinely bad game. I'm amazed it got past Nintendo certification due to its tendency to crash and the fact the permadeath party thing is blatantly the result of a bug.
Holy Magic Century was just a bit obtuse and repetitive. Aidyn is pure, insulting shit. A shame because the writing is half-decent.
Does anyone have any experience with turbografx hucards not working? I want to know if they can be fixed, and how difficult it might be to fix them.
>>3076659
Did you try cleaning the contacts? Use a high percentage isopropyl alcohol on a qtip. If that doesn't work, try rubbing the contacts with a pencil eraser.
>>3076659
Yes. I assume tiny traces inside get fucked up. Never bothered trying to look inside to fix it. It's one of the easiest systems to make repros for.
>>3076738
i'm atually looking at buying this game, but the ad states several times the card does not work. I figure it's worth the risk for what he's asking.
>>3076773
But does that translate to an easy fix? I'm not great with a soldering iron, but I should be able to manage to a certain point if it's more than just cleaning the card's contacts.
What "bad" games do you enjoy?
pic related, pretty fun if you get used to the controls
This... has potential to turn into a baiting thread, but I genuinely love the japanese and gameboy demake of Quest 64.

>>3076463
>anything that's negative is bait
ok kid
>>3076514
He didn't said OP was bait, but that the thread has potential to turn into bait, which is positively true.
Back when I was in the third grade I'd go to this game store where they'd let us test their games.
I remember playing an adventure game, and the only thing that is left in my mind is the ending: the final cutscene, in which they show the main characters on a boat, sailing towards a sunset, right after escaping from a dungeon. I kind of remember fighting against skeletons or something like that.
I'm not sure what the platform was. It was either SNES or PS1.
Is there a thread where I could have that clarified for me? If not, does anyone know what I am talking about? This was back in 2003.
Image absolutely not related.
Thanks in advance.
>>3076307
maybe contra?
Mystic Quest?
>>3076307
>>game store
>>final cutscene

>>back in 2003
I'm so confused! What store had a PS1 on display in 2003, let alone a SNES? Who played all the way through a game IN THE STORE and why do you only remember the ending?? I mean, I saw a guy play through Sonic 1 once in 1992 - also in the store. But that's a completely different beast; I've never timed the first one but I can play through Sonic 2 in under one hour and I image they're about the same length.
HOLD THE FUCK UP
WITH ISN'T ANYBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS

It's definitely something alright, although if you haven't played the games or have zero appreciation for LA you wouldn't actually care.

This board is populated by teenagers who are fans of emulated console games.
What are some must-play exclusives for this thing? I'm in the mood for action-puzzlers.
TG16 / PC Engine thread.
>>3075426
>action-puzzlers
Heh. Heh heh heh.
I can name a game that is one of the greatest in that genre.
Of any system.
Of all time.
But you're gonna hate it.
Trust me. You will hate it. (At first.)
Because the controls are too damn unique.
But give it enough time to get used to the controls.
Get used to the gameplay because it's hard at first. Don't try to kill all the enemies. THat's not the objective.
This game is oh so good. It's a PCE exclusive.
Great music too.
So unique. Like freaking Umihara Kawase level unique. Like freaking Cocoron unique. Holy shit it's a one of a kind.
Even if you don't see what the big deal is you need to play more, get to the 5th stage at least.
Great level design too man.
You're welcome.
Yeah. I'm saying that in advance because you will thank me for recommending such a cool game.
Heh.
Pece out.
>>3075436
I'll bite, which game?
>>3075436
Yeah, what are you talking about?
I recently got Super Street Fighter 2 for the Genesis cart only. It seems odd to me that people would take the game and throw away the plastic cases for Genesis games, while it may be understandable for just cardboard. Anyway, I figure I can get one of those cheap Sega Classics Tommy Lasorda Baseball cases no one ever buys and just print up my own cover for Super Street Fighter 2. Now the original default cover of the US version, is ugly in my opinion, so since it is only for my collection, why not print out a better one. So here is a rough concept I quickly threw together.
I am requesting Super Street Fighter 2 art (note on the Genesis it was just regular SSF2, not Turbo/X). So uh, official SSF2 art thread? Or go ahead for custom Genesis cover art thread?
OP here again,
Just for those more autistic than I ... yes I am aware the game is not rated E for everyone and the barcode is not the same as the official Genesis release, remember the image here is just a concept (sketch). Also I welcome critiques or suggestions.
>>3075358
what was that cover art site that had like every cover ever?
