Any Canadians here? Never played this before. Would it be fun to play with some friends over joking about the old map and the cities and stuff?

not educational game but another great cross-country game is The Great American Cross-Country Road Race, a solid OutRun clone from Activision. It adds some interesting extra stuff to the mix, such as needing to refuel, weather conditions affecting the road, and avoiding police speed traps.

Is it worth going the extra mile to use a proper PC in a cabinet or is there no reason not to use a Pi setup?
108 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
I dunno, power consumption and boot time are the biggest deal breakers.

But I personally absolutely hate the boot screen of any computer. I'd much rather push power on and get the game loaded instantly. No "welcome to fucking windows" or raspberry pi matrix screen or retro pie menu or lakka gui.
>>
The Pi can only do so much. Going beyond the 4th generation will bring you troubles. A PC is way more expensive but you'll really have no limits on what you can emulate.
>>
Yes. Yes, it is worth going the extra mile of finding a slim used PC or a laptop for a MAME cabinet over using a Raspberry Pi. You are fucking retarded to even need to ask that question. The only reason I ca/n imagine is that you plan to do other retarded things like use a USB joystick and a composite display but the PC

You're a bad person, OP, and also sound like an immature manchild.

That said I heard Neopets pretty much died recently because their new owners lost the data for their most popular games. Feels bad man.

I miss going to conventions and hamfests. And seeing The guy. you know the one. The guy who sold floppy disks of shareware for $5 a disk. and he'd have whole walls with little disk-racks loaded with copies of all the hits.

And, you know. He'd have boxes of cracked registered games, but those would be kept under the table and cost $7 a piece.

Those days are gone, but not forgotten.

you paid for cracked disks? sucker. even the pirates warned against that. all you had to do was give your contact blank disks. no charge
>>
>>3076024

4 years ago I bought 15,000 floppy disks from the last batch made in the UK before they stopped being produced. I really wanted to do a sort of at-cost piracy ring for Amiga games over the internet, but my modest attempts at getting it off the ground failed.

I ended up giving them all away to a local retro games group last year.

You're doing God's work, son.

I enjoy that I can keep games. Even a modern FPS on a single floppy disk. Since I do a lot of work with older tech, it's nice having the options available.

Pictured: A Steam banner I made for this game that is larger than the game itself.

So yeah, title pretty much says it all, MSX looks like an interesting system worth checking out, but most if not all of the games seem to be from the (Japan) region, so I'm guessing lots of them will be inaccessible to english only speaking people.

Is there some sort of "recommended" list of MSX games worth checking out that are english friendly? I know there are a few already fan-translated ones, but besides those really.

Penguin Adventure.

The MSX was released in Europe and got many games in English over there, but most were just ports of ZX Spectrum games.

How do you guys deal with retro PC games eating every spare CPU cycle? It's really annoying when you're trying to get into a game, but then there's the distraction of your CPU fan roaring at full speed like a vacuum cleaner non-stop.

Why does this shit happen in the first place?

limit them to 1 core ?
>>
>>3087616

I am running one one core. A considerably fast one at that.

I don't even understand why these games feel the need to reserve every spare cycle that isn't in use, even when they don't need the additional cycles in the first place. I'm talking about games whose recommended requirements probably include a Pentium II processor. Running them on a P4 would still hog up every cycle.
