So I'm a pretty big fan of FF7 and I love everything about it, but while looking up some similar games to try out I came across this series. Looking at some short clips of this game it looks very similar to my idea of a great JRPG. The thing I want to know is, is this a good place to start? Or should I try some of the older games first?
There's absolutely no tutorial, there's no direction and to be honest - I don't think this is a good game. Try Legend of Dragoon

Its crap. Play Star Ocean the Second Story if you haven't yet.
this thread is nothing but terrible opinions.
Saga Frontier is probably my favorite RPG on the PSX, and it's up against the likes of Vagrant Story and Wild Arms, so you better believe it's a pretty fucking good game.

I just use rubbing alcohol. I've heard brasso is good, but I've never personally tried it.
>God Tier: Electrical Contact Cleaner
Yes use abrasives. Good job retard.
Hmm, I don't know about that wd-40 contact cleaner. Your best bet is high percentage isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Can't go wrong.

Does anything else make you want to end it harder than shit like this?
Let's see those contrarian white knights.

You sound like you play retro games because you think it's "your" little secret club.
That is wrong. You should be playing them because they are fun, and then you wouldn't have this kind of worry. I suggest you find another little "secret club" and stop shitting up the board with threads like this
/r9k/ is leaking again.
He does what he calls "Visual Reviews" where he talks about the visual appeal of retro game boxes and cartridges. It struck me as a very odd but very original idea for a channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/JcaliforniaJ

No. I'm not going to check out your youtube
I played Dragon Quest 8 awhile ago and enjoyed the hell out of it. Are the other DQ games like 8, or are they a pretty different experience? Which ones should I check out first?
Pic related, I heard it was really long with tons of shit to do, which is up my alley, but then I heard that you have to play for three hours, just talking to people around the starting point, before having a single fight, and that sounds just ludicrous.
8 bored me to death, but 1-6 are pretty good. Didn't play 7.
The best one, in my opinion, is DQIII. Just a grand adventure all around the world with lots of things to do, customizable party members and overall the single most representative of the DQ games (it's a prequel to Dragon Quest 1).
>>3063139
DQ3 and 7 have loads of content with expansive worlds, if that's what you're referring to. The other DQ game worlds aren't necessarily as large. DQ2 was huge compared to the first DQ game, and despite having an open world, didn't really have any sidequests. DQ4 is split into several chapters focused on specific PCs, and then it finally places you in the role of the hero and gives you free reign. I suppose there's a lot to do, but I don't think I'd recommend it in your case.
Don't bother with DQ5. The game sucks despite what our resident DQ5 autist may want you to believe. I have no clue about DQ6 as I've yet to play it.
show me a Sega Master System game with that level of details.

Show me a stock NES game with those graphics.

This game worked in any nes, isn't cheating!
define "level of details" for me
Why do Virtual Console releases always look and play like garbage?
All the VC titles I tried on my Wii look great.
The n64 titles don't play as good because the gamecube/classic controller's stick isn't as precise as the original N64 stick, but it still works for most games that don't require precise aiming.

virtual console is the best n64 emulation you can get pham

Couldn't find a General Repair thread so here one is. Sorry I have no idea what usually goes in the OP.
My Super Famicom Jr cartridge slot is loose as a goose and sometimes, especially in FX games (yoshi's island) the game freezes or has a black screen on boot. I've cleaned the pins but I don't think that's the main problem. The cartridge takes no force to go into place. I only found this video online of a dude retensioning a megadrive's slot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJuKsbvr3PM
Is the same thing possible/a good idea with the snes? Will this weaken the pins? Thanks for any help.
>>3026546
>The cartridge takes no force to go into place.
Yeah that's probably no good. The cartridge slot is supposed to have some resistance so the pins don't lose contact. On mine you can move the cartridge all around while the game is on and the game wont even notice. Removing and inserting the cartridge is supposed to scrub the pins also which keeps the contacts clear of any dirt.
Get a needle or some other kind of fine pointed object and carefully bend the pins back outward again. The pins are pretty strong but don't bend them too hard obviously. A little bit goes a long way you probably don't want the cartridge slot to have a death grip on your games.
>>3026628
k will do, thanks anon
>>3026628
so i tried to do this and it was pretty bad. the pin I tried just made a snapping sound and is not lower than all the other pins. They're all surrounded by plastic so it's hard to get behind them. I might have just fucked it up :\
I betrayed him.
I feel bad.
>You go out of his way to save his ass
>He just kills himself at the end of the game anyway.
>>3084927
>I never finished the game.
You've had two decades, pleb.
The jumping in this game is fucked.
I played for about 40 minutes and every single death was from not pulling off a double jump. This stage in particular with the waterfalls, but also on the alleys after it. I don't think I have ever seen a jumping mechanic that needed to be timed so precisely. Even fighting games don't require such frame perfect accuracy. I can beat Shinobi 3 with no problem but this is kicking my ass for all the wrong reasons.

It's second nature after a while
or PROTIP: use that jumping magic, it makes you jump high for the rest of the level

lol what a casual little shit
Was it really that bad?
It wasn't great. It wasn't just this ad but this ad made it even more apparent that he was kind of testing on his laurels and didn't have the same artistic drive and vision on this project.
>>3083619
At best, it's incredibly mediocre. At worst it's a broken mess.
The gameboy port/spinoff is pretty fun, though, it's a totally different game.
>>3083678
I think that Episodes 2 and 3 are legit great.
Episode 1 is an abomination (except for Episode 1 DM, where it's fantastic), while Episode 4 is the definition of "mixed bag".
I've been playing some cool retro games for the last few days and am on Final Fantasy. And what the fuck is this green stuff. Is it supposed to be grass? bushes? slime? srsly
>>3082814
it's a gigantic bed of moss. it's going to destroy the world unless you defeat chaos and the fiends.

That's actually the plot to a non-/vr/ game that I like a whole lot called 7th Dragon.
Does anyone else feel like Super Mario World was a little too generous with 1-ups?
>>3081717
The problem started with SMB3.
>>3081717
Well, it's one of those Mario games where getting a game over can actually undo some of your progress - unless you obsessively rerun ghost houses to save every time you pass a level.
Generally speaking the difficulty of SMW is largely quite low, save for the extra stages. A skilled enough player will probably be able to beat the regular game without needing to pick up any free 1up shrooms and just getting by with 100 coin freebies, so perhaps the fact that they're there at all is being overly generous. But kids love their Mario, and the bar is clearly set to their level - the extra stages in Mario games tend to be geared to skilled (read older) players.
>>3081717
They were playing with things, trying to find a balance between bullshit and fun.
My favorite place to grab a bunch of lives was on top of Vanilla Dome, there was a level where you got a grey p-switch that turned all these koopas into sliver coins. You could get like 60 lives in a couple minutes.
Why is this game so perfect?
It's not. SRPGs are total snorefests.
>n64
into the trash it goes
Got this game for my birthday. Got bored to tears after just 20 minutes of playing it. Traded it for DK64. I don't care if OB64 is an uncommon & pricey game today, I don't regret that trade one damn bit.
