Can we discuss how great the SID chip was for its time, and how good it is now for a 34 year old computer?

It's so good chinks knock it off to this day.
>>3076493
I discovered once there was the soundcard Innovation SSI-2001 for the IBM PC based on SID chip.
Some russian guy made a replica of it and it works. Pretty great work.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlmtU__glmU
This video shows prototype, but he finished his work.
Too bad the soundcard didn't get much popularity.
>>3076493
I fucking love it, but I really wish the filters weren't so damn fragile.
I've almost given up on finding a C64 or C128 with a non-broken SID chip for a price I can afford.
>>3077603
Are they any good?
The last batch of knockoff SID chips I heard about were just empty dip packages, some even has lead in them if you were lucky.
Anyone go hunting at yard sales or Flea markets still? I went out today and didn't find anything. Not even some junk games. Went to like 12 sales. Last week I got a Vectrex though. And week before got some game gear, game boy and genesis stuff. Any cool finds lately guys? Or general garage sale / flea market talk.
Quit going too much competition
emulate, thx to youtube everything is expensive
>>3075848
I've never had luck at garage sales, I remember I got to one once and when asking if they had videogames the guy said he had just sold all his stuff 10 min ago. I've had some luck at flea markets, got a snes for $7.00 once.
I never hear anyone talk about these games, probably because they were unknown outside of Japan until recently.
They made a sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2, a sequel to A Link to the Past, and a remake of the original Legend of Zelda.

Was Mode 7 good?
How did it work?
Why no other games on other platforms replicated it?
>>3065618
it's just basically a texture, mapped to a flat plane, that can rotate and scale
>>3065618
Sega CD had it, and also had sprite scaling.

Previous Thread - >>3061219
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Is SMB2J the Dark Souls of retro games?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5apu4ML9Wto
King's Field is Dark Souls of retro games
>this game is like dark souls cause its hard lel
i'd say zelda 2 is the most actually dark souls-ish nes game
>>3086421
wasn't king's field a main inspiration for the souls games?
I'll start off with my favorite fighter on psx.
>>3085996
>Tobal
>hidden gem
You know there's a Japanese exclusive Tobal 2 and you can capture the monsters in the dungeons to use in vs mode? Also check out Ehrgeiz
>>3086024
Played both, but thanks. Keep bumping the thread with more hidden gems.
Here's another little gem for the PSX.
downloaded a vb emulator just to play this, possibly some mario tennis and red alarm too. any other vb games worth playing or are they all shit?
>>3085174
VB had like 10 games.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Boy_games#Released_games
The only other one people talk about is Jack Bros, but that's probably because of the megami tensi connection.
>>3085174
The VB actually had a pretty good, but very small, library. Give Teleroboxer, Jack Bros, and 3D Tetris a try.
Play Teleroboxer (although the control scheme might be hard to map on a regular control, you could still use the 4 face buttons as the 2nd d-pad.
Vertical Force is a decent shmup.
Galactic Piball is a pretty fun pinball game (although it's not an actuall ball, more like a disc).
Jack Bros.
Mario Clash
Innsmouse no yakata
SD Gundam Dimension Wars if you can read japanese and like SRPGs like the Super Robot War games.
There's some other puzzle games like V-tetris, Panic Bomber but I haven't tried those.
And if you like Golf games, T&E Golf (or just "Golf" in the US) is an actually pretty fun game on its own right too.
There's also one of those Konami Pro yakyuu baseball games.
How come we never talk about Alone in the Dark? The first three installments are amazing horror-adventureand Jack in the Dark is cool too. Arguably it what also spawned stuff like Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
Another great series relegated to oblivion by modern attempts to cash in on the franchise with mediocre products.
>>3080837
I quite enjoyed AITD4 - but I think it tried to deviate too much from the direction RE had gone - it should have remained about ghosts, zombies and the occult, that was it's core strength - no stupid 'shadow monsters' also the game that game out on the xbox 360 had some pretty neat mechanics - but 90% of the game was running around burning tentacles, who though that would be a good idea?
Somebody make the kick starter for a proper horror AITD!
>>3080864
4 was pretty and had its moments, but overall it was a very different style from the 90s gamesand it's not retro.
I always felt the real heir the series was Nightmare Creatures. While it was definitely more action-oriented, it did have a lot of AITD's gothic feel, slower pacing and spoopy atmosphere.
I-is this retro?

What is this shit? Is this honestly what people think arena shooters should look like?
Also no it's not retro.
>>3089785
Looks retro....
>>3089790
It looks like a minecraft mod at best.
Sorry if you were being satirical.
This is a grey area for the board. The games are new but the hardware is old. If we in fact have any mods who disagree with this being here then that's their call but people have made a lot of cool stuff for retro hardware which we might like to share. So until if or when this thread gets deleted, post & discuss some of your favorite Retro Homebrew titles.
>>3086015
As you can see from the picture I posted in the OP, there's people still making some pretty impressive looking stuff for the Neo Geo. Of course I would be hard pressed to drop $500 on one of them because there's so many other things I could do with that money but the price isn't unfair considering what original Neo Geo games cost when new and adjusted for inflation.
This one is a Metal Slug "homage" I use quotation marks because it looks like they took a lot of assets from the original games unless they're very very good at just making their new visuals just invocative of the source material.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9OEt-3CMXI
The same teams has also made some pretty decent looking shmups for the system and that Turrican type game which was released for this and Dreamcast. Yeah they do pretty good work for such a relatively limited audience.
I particularly enjoy it though when it's stuff for the weird systems. like that guy who made stuff for 32X. If someone could make a good port of Out-Run for the 32X I would be so on board.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahISpH1eMzg
>>3086015
There's no gray area if it runs on the original hardware. The rule is "on platforms launched in 1999", the release date of the game only matters where there's no clear platform (PC games).
Is Valis the most underrated retro platformer series?
No.
Absolutely not
While I think the pc engine itself is underrated, the valis series itself is overrated as fuck. The best game is the valis 1 remake and even that is merely okay
Telenet was wildly inconsistent with their games
>>3085798
>the valis series itself is overrated as fuck
you don't even know what that means, we're talking about Valis
calling stuff overrated is fucking retarded anyway
fear effect series any one have gif of this series love the games
>>3085437
Well I may have one or two kicking about. Always happy to see another fan
Do you collect complete-in-box games, /vr/?
Carts loose, CD games with case and manual. Saturn games, a stack of CD-Rs and my best handwriting.
There only retro game I have in box (other than PS1 and Dreamcast games) is Donkey Kong Country. Yard sale. Five bucks. Best I had was Super Mario RPG. Found it complete in box for two bucks at a pawn shop back in the early 2000s. Sold it when I moved to California and needed money.
Other than those, I would have had cases from buying new SNES games and such, but they're long gone.
>>3085138
Only complete I have are cd based games. Had a couple complete snes games (ff vi, mega man x) but sold them about a year ago. Have manuals for a lot of cartridge games.
