I'm in Europe with friends for an extended time, and I plan on traveling as much as I can. This might include some weird and out of place areas, and I don't want to get charged out the ass for using my cell phone and roaming.

Mostly looking to get a dash mount GPS, which kind would you all recommend? I don't know a thing about tech, and I've heard a lot of them need to have maps downloaded before a trip, or updated regularly. Is there anything that works as easy and well as a phone GPS but without all the extra pre-trip downloads and complicated steps to use it? Something where I can just search and go, and not have to worry about paying roaming fees like I would for a phone?

Thanks in advance!

There's a app called maps.me
download it to your phone, download the maps while at home or using a wifi that are relevant to your trip, use it everywhere without using data (turn off data roaming just to make sure)

Now that was complicated
>>
>>1218454
I figured that would take up a lot of data if I wanted to do a cross-Europe road trip eventually with stops along the way. I'll have paper maps soon too.

Also a question for the tech store but it's closed now
>>

You can use your phones built in GPS without having Data or Wifi. Just make sure you have an Offline Map app. maps.me is a good one but there are plenty out there.

has anyone on here been successful with a instagram + travel blog? just wondering if it's even lucrative. I'm not talking big money, but is it reasonable to make 1k if you stick to a plan with a travel blog/instagram and treat it professionally? what does it take? does anyone here do it already? all thoughts/recommendations welcome.

Bumping for interest

related fact: an Instagram account with 50k followers makes 200-400 bucks a month
>>
>>1218252
>has anyone on here been successful with a instagram + travel blog
Yes, but you have the wrong approach to it, it's a hobby that can turn into something profitable if done right not the other way around. Else you could as well do the usual marketer stuff, pump and dump a few IG accounts with a affiliate link and earn more money in less time and with less effort.

>I'm not talking big money, but is it reasonable to make 1k if you stick to a plan with a travel blog/instagram and treat it professionally?
Sure but it will take a lot of time and effort because you sell yourself and not a product until you reach the point where someone says "this guy should sell our product and we gonna pay him for it" or your viewers say "hey you got a patreon? I love your stuff and think it's worth $x/months"
>create a brand for you
>get good equipment, nobody wants to see a 360p potato video with lousy audio and edited in MS moviemaker
>create good content and not "click muh link la" shit
>build a fanbase, most travel blogs fail here
The public decides, if you're just a shitty cunt that nobody likes your journey is over at this point and there's nothing you can do about it
>interact with your fanbase
>create new content every 2-4 days, longest time you can go without new content is 14 days or your account becomes stale
>you attract more and more followers and can actually influence people
>the one year mark passes
>suddenly you get approached by "sponsors" to review products, sponsor a vid etc. If you fuck up here you will kill your presence...

So to sum up the above: You now have a part-full-time hobby that YOU have to bankroll with 3-4k per month to keep the content up while it earns you about $500-1000/months and a few free trips/products to review until your community grows to a critical mass a year or two past the above...

And before you ask, no you can't streamline the process by throwing money at it for fake views/followers/fans.

Op here. Thank you and to the other comments.

I know it's not easy and probably not as rewarding as many make it out to be unless you're a blonde 23 year old who poses her ass in every photo (a la sarah underwood). But i agree the ones that i like actually provide content and is likeable like snapchick who was not so much a travel blogger but a photo enthusiast. And yeah not just anyone can do it. I'm thinking more and more it could be a collective group so you share the expenses, time, all the while learning about yourself. I've thought about it some more so that i already do the cool stuff i just dont brag about it.. that comes second.

Thank you again..more comments are always appreciated.

Hey /trv/,

I'm planning to travel to NZ over Easter. I will be flying in/out of Auckland and will have 8 days.

What is a logical itinerary? Not a whole lot of time so I'd like to actually do some shit and not spend a majority of the trip transiting places or looking at the bottom of a beer glass at 3am.

Appreciate it.

>>
Edit; Could also fly in and out of Christchurch. Slightly more expensive but $ isn't a huge concern
>>
>>1218095
Don't spend more than one full day in Auckland, it's not a tourist town.

If you have a car, it takes 3 hours to drive to Rotorua, and Taupo/Tongariro National Park are only an hour from that. You could do them in one or two days if you have a clear plan about what you want to do/see.

Wellington is about five hours from that area, and can also be done in about a day.

From there you could fly to Queenstown, do Christchurch//Dunedin/Milford Sound from there, and then fly back to Auckland. Queenstown is probably the nicest city in NZ at the moment. Milford Sound is a full day trip from there, but it's worth it because it's the NZ they put on all the postcards. Fair warning, Christchurch is still a shadow of its former self, and I wouldn't advise going anywhere near Kaikoura at the moment.

If you just want to do the North Island, you could take two days or so to go north to the Bay of Islands and Cape Reinga (nice in summer, weather may be iffy around Easter), or down to the Coromandel from Auckland (again, weather might be iffy). Wanganui (slightly north of Wellington) is also very nice.

If you want to fly in and out from Christchurch, you could take some time to look at the west coast. It rains all year-round there, so you don't have to be concerned about the weather.

Basically depends on what you're interested in.

If you want volcanoes, you want Auckland, Rotorua,Taupo, Tongariro, and White Island (off Whakatane, which is fourish hours from Auckland).

If you want adventure tourism, you want Rotorua and Queenstown.

If you want skiing or hiking, you want Queenstown.

If you want nightlife, you want Wellington.

If you want beaches, you want the Coromandel or the Bay of Islands. Don't go swimming at the west coast beaches around Auckland unless you know what you're doing.

Don't bother with Gisbourne or Taranaki.

As a New Zealander I can give you some advice:
1. fly straight to Wellington after you've landed in Auckland; most of north island is boring and lame except for Wellington, which is a lovely city
2. After exploring Wellington, hop on a cruise to Nelson; from Nelson go to Marlborough Sounds, which is absolutely beautiful and terribly underrated, you'll love it
3. After exploring Marlborough Sounds, travel down the West Coast, which has lots of lovely scenic spots; go to in information centre there so you know where to find all the gems along the west coast
4. After you've travelled down the west coast, go to Queenstown; you'll go through the southern alps to get there, so it's a scenic drive that you'll enjoy
5. Head to Invercargill, which is south of the southern alps, and walk around Bluff hill if you want too, because it's a lovely walk
6. Head up to Te Anau and go trek through Fiordland on the Milford Track, where you'll end up in the beautiful Milford Sound, where you'll leave on a prebooked boat
7. Go to Invercargill, fly up to Auckland, then fly home

Bring a tent and your own snorkel and you can do any island for free.
Public transport is cheap and comprehensive.
If you're in Honolulu, go to Chinatown for all your meals. Better food than you'll get anywhere in Waikiki, and cheap.

It's expensive to get to any islands besides Oahu, unfortunately.

Anything to do in Beijing with a 4 hour layover, also is it easy to get the visa that allows you to leave the airport?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
the fuck are you gonna do with four hours? lol

Ride the taxi for 30 minutes, take a uturn and head straight back to the airport?

You're probably not going to leave transit anyway, so no chance to go out.
>>
>>1217619
Four hours might be absolutely nothing depending on how far away the airport is in Beijing.

I had a little over 6 hours in Shanghai Pudong and it was barely enough to get to the Bund, take a couple pics and go back. Immigration eats up a shitton of time.
As for the transit visa, it's very easy and they don't seem to give you any problems whatsoever, outside of chaotic organization at the airport and large queues.
>>
Train from the airport to city takes around 30mins.

Is it 4 hours total? You'll probably spend near 30mins-1hr queueing for immigration, it might not be worth it.

But if you're gonna do it you could go and check out Tiananmen Square or another site. Alternatively, just wander around the hutongs for a bit, get something to eat.

Hi /trv/, newbie here. I'm planning a 15 days Interrail trip with some friends this summer, and I need some tips to move around with a low budget, I'd start in Rome and finish in Barcelona (I live in Madrid and it's cheaper to take a flight to Rome than going to BCN), I upload a route that I've planned, so you can give me recommendations and everything else. Any help is welcome!

Trains in west europe cost alot, even if you have an interrail pas, they often make you pay extra.

This won't be a cheap trip, if any of you can drive, rent a car and do a roadtrip
>>
>>1217517
>This won't be a cheap trip, if any of you can drive, rent a car and do a roadtrip

What the fuck this is terrible advice. Trains with an interrail pass are a fraction of the price of cars. Not to mention the fact that he's trying to visit the city centres of multiple ancient city centres that were never designed for cars so are rammed constantly. Driving is the worst possible idea.
>>
>>1217436
The main thing I'd say is that you've been far too ambitious with how many places you want to go to. There's not much point in visiting a city per day, you'll be exhausted and not actually get to really experience many of the places you visit. With 15 days you really only want to be going to 4-6 cities really, then you can enjoy them properly, and even 6 is a bit fast really.

Anybody ever been to audi Arabia?
supposed to go there for 2 weeks for work.

what to wear ? what to bring?
what do i need to know?

Why don't you want to use Air France?

I'm also checking to book a flight to Tokyo on September, and the best options are Air France, Lufthansa or KLM.

Waiting for my holidays to be confirmed to know the exact dates though.

Any recommendations about those 3 airlines?

Heads up, I posted a long reply to your other thread

Does anyone enjoy travelling alone? And I mean alone. With solo travel, the cliche is "you're never alone", but I feel that this is only really relevant if you're going to hostels or other places that are popular for solo travellers.

But what's it like to travel completely alone, staying in hotels and doing things without others?
38 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>1216616
Absolute bliss. Sure it occasionally gets lonely or wanting to share the experience with somebody. However I can honestly say that all the positives of going it alone outweighs any of those negatives.
>>
>>1216618
I'm on the cusp of booking a solo holiday to Cambodia and Vietnam. This is reassuring. Problem is, I'm 18, look very British and well actually am told I look younger than 18. Won't I just seem out of place?
>>
>>1216619
lol no, that won't be the problem. There are lots of youngsters travelling. The problem will be that you'll be targeted by all the scammers and everyone will try to screw you over. I mean, if you are older scammers often give up on you or don't even approach to save effort. Young guys especially on their own are presumed the easiest prey. And in fact they are. You will be scammed, just accept it be prepared to write it off to the learning curve.
